Weird Gear: Beyond Your Listening Pleasure. Thursday August 10 at the Royal Oak, 594 Union St (Cnr of Richardson), Brooklyn NY, 11211. Free entry and free goodies, 10pm til late.
Weird Gear number three is in effect this Thursday and it’s picking up speed – if you haven’t been yet, then for heaven’s sake come down.
What is Weird Gear again? Anything that doesn’t fit into the normal channels – but it is more than that. The tracks played have edge, not just groovy for groovy’s sake (no silly records, no lounge or cheese records). And we try not to behave like DJs either. We’re not interested in making people dance – with alcohol, people can dance all by themselves. Trying to make people dance just means there will be tracks you won’t let yourself play, and it’s precisely those tracks that we’re interested in – in principle at least.
And this month, we have our very first, carefully selected guest DJ. He has been fully briefed in the ways of the Weird Gear Swordsperson and he’s known as Mr. Chilly Freeze Steak. He'll be playing from an excellent room-temperature platter of coddled Polish prog, creamy French freak, roasted Hungarian hairless and braised Greek kookinama.
Like the two times before, there will be a special, giveaway Weird Gear CD and of course, some delicious sweet delicacies courtesy of DJ Honky. I think this time the mystery ingredient is gooseberries (last time it was lavender).
