It’s Weird Gear week again, this Thursday, September 14.

The giveaway CD this time is the Weird Gear Minidisc Megamix. It’s too bad the minidisc age was so short lived because as a format, it had a brilliant manipulation aspect to it. For the Megamix, tracks were recorded over and over and then trackmarked either side, so the superfluous could be deleted – leaving the chosen edits to be shuffled at will. All using just one machine (the Sony MZ-R30, an early model with dedicated edit buttons that made the whole thing possible, no menus to deal with).

The result has the clumsy charm of the cassette mixes of yore, using classic Weird Gear material – with 520 edits to its 42 minute credit (the timing of hearing the track, then pressing the trackmark button had the same unprecitable quality of the pause button on a tape machine - doing this on computer would lose the 'human' quality, and would not have taken four days!) I hope y’all be there to pick one up.

So if you like your music new to your ears, or at least criminally underplayed anywhere else other than LA (home of the other Weird Gear night) – then Weird Gear is for you!

Weird Gear is every 2nd Thursday of the month at the Royal Oak, 594 Union St (Cnr of Richardson), Brooklyn NY, 11211.
