hildegard knef - so hat alles einen sinn (love "in dieser stadt")
sesame street - welcome! (south american sesame street thing)
va - das unmögliche jazzkonzert (most dixie crap but two "nice" jazz pieces played by amateurs. "Stolen moments" and "interruptus")
love unlimited orchestra - rhapsody in white ("midnight and you" and "what a groove" are the tracks to like)
gusztav csik quartet - csik gusztav es egyuttese (wanted this for a while. cool hungarian groovy keyboard jazz on pepita)
george duke - liberated fantasies (i allready knew it would be stupid fusion keyboard noodling )

the association - cherish/don't blame the rain

She also recorded that song with English lyrics as 'This Old Town' - yes, nice song, probably my favourite of the few Knef tracks I've heard. I don't have the German version yet, but I did see (and not buy) that LP some years ago. Her nicotine-stained voice takes a bit of getting used to, though!

    A very nice find indeed.

The French 45 is £50+ so I would presume this would go for the same ammount.

What label is the Choc watch band 45 on?

I had no idea "In the past" was available on 7"

    Nice!!!

Only one today, but I don't complain:

    Michael 7: S/T (Amos Records)

Mostly funky instrumentals, recorded probably somewhere between 69-71, the line-up includes such notable session men as Mike Melvoin (hammond/piano/clavinet), Hal Blaine, Thomas Scott, Dennis Budimir etc. I've never seen or heard about this one, nor I couldn't find anything googling - so anyone familiar with the LP, please, enlighten me..

Not a lot today from the market or carboot but:

Mandingo - Savage Rite (EMI) Everyone knows what this is about musically but really happy to complete my Mandingo collection with a mint UK copy for £4.

Al Caiola - Tuff Guitar English Style (United Artists) Instrumental LP designed to cash-in on the 60's British invasion. Covers of Heart Full Of Soul, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, You Really Got Me etc in swinging 60's style. Will no doubt remain unlistended to and further clutter up my collection.

Hip Hop 14 (Streetsounds) A Vulture usually picks up at least one of these from the Electro series each week. Will someone else find another this weekend?

Big Daddy Kane - Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now (Cold Chillin') UK only 12" off his second LP. One of his more commercial efforts but he did a lot worse. Spare.

Also left a Technics SL1500 (new one on me?) for £10 but it had a few knocks and scratches and I already have two SL1210's and a SL1300 so left it.

    Will do

Just needle dropped so far and The Yardbirds cover was the highlight but I promise to give it more attention.

The Home album features Laurie Wisefield later of Wishbone Ash and Tina Turner's backing band. If you enjoy the lp then "The Alchemist" is worth checking. Neither of them do very much for me though.

A day with the kids so very little trawling. Managed to sneak out for 40 minutes before the football results and picked up "The Billion Pound Project" - Andy Lewis comp.

I forgot to mention that the local Oxfam had been given a bunch of Punk (Lurkers, Slaughter, UK Subs and others) and some scarce but not very good NWOBHM. Unfortunately, I saw them being priced up for silly amounts, as per usual. The chap doing the pricing was playing the Lurkers' "Fulham Fallout" on a tatty looking deck.

Much, much, much too much money spent this week!
A combination of ebay and record fair.

    Jeff Sturges and Universe/ST

    Been after this for ages.
Si-Spex from The Creators played it to me years ago, and I bought it off him today at the Plymouth Record Fair.

    Drum Battle

Very surprised to be able to pick this up at a good price.
Could never find it in Japan.
Funky easy stuff with touches of psych.

    Fu-schnickens /F.U. dont...
Again been after this for years...and does it sound good!

    Kaos/Court is now in...
Classic hip hop that John Peel was fond of I think as he played about half the album. Glad to have this in the colletion.

    The Creators
Was kind of funny to but this at the record fair and then go right up to Si-Spex (of the creators) and say "look what I've found".

Now most of my firend know that I dont like 7's and never buy them.
But 7 inch hip hop is the exception to the rule, I love it.
The B-sides are often some of the best tracks of the albums and they are always cheap as chips. These where about 30p each.

Poor pickings this week-end, only picked up these two for 25p each. I really like the Alex Campbell folk album, not played the Walker Brothers but there must be a good track on it somewhere. It's a pity that every Society LP Ive picked up that their pressings are pretty poor. vladislav

Alex Campbell - Sings Folk. (Society)
The Walker Brothers - The Fabulous Walker Brothers (Wing)

I was poacher turned gate keeper today; took half a dozen boxes of stuff down to the local booter, got there before sunrise and in four hours sold four records....

    2x fleetwood mac 12"s from the 80s
    Abbey Road
and a knackered copy of Hatful of Hollow.

Blew my takings on coffee and back issues of Mojo Collections.

At first I bought records, then I started to collect records; now I merely accumulate records.

Some interesting stuff this morning, about two thirds of it from one stall, which seemed to be an ex- record fair or shop seller offloading his old stock. He wasn't 50p cheap, but most were around the £2 - £4 range, with one or two a bit higher, but only one over a tenner, and the rest not even close. A lot of punts so glad to report they all sound pretty worthwhile so far!

Peter Hall – The Estates/New Town Suite/Duet No 1 For Guitar & Violin (Prototype Records) [The most interesting and expensive of the lot - any info on this would be appreciated as it's a blind punt, and there's not much info on the cover. Basically a set of three free jazz sites with percussion, dulcimer, clarinet, flute, violin etc in the mix, recorded between 1972 – 4, and LP was issued in 1977 with some link between the music and Bracknell New Town, possibly a festival or something. No familiar names playing, probably a private press (cat no.is PROLP 001), but most importantly, it’s very, very good indeed]

The Don Rendell Five feat. Barbara Thompson – Just Music (Spotlite) [1974 BBC recordings, according to the sleeve, LP issued in 1976 – only needle dropped on this so far, but sounds good…nice mix of free and more melodic and rhythmic passages]

Neil Ardley – Music Of The Spheres (Decca) [heavy synth-jazz fusion with John Martyn, Ian Carr, Norma Winstone and more…looking forward to this one]

Mike Osborne/Stan Tracey – Original (Cadillac) [1973 LP containing a single long improvisation spread over both sides]

Thelonious Monk – Thelonious Himself: Solo Piano (Riverside) [needle drop shows the title tells it as it is – with the exception of a final track featuring John Coltrane]

Bud Shank – California Dreamin’ (Fontana) [jazz takes – featuring Chet Baker – on pop hits of the day like Monday Monday, Norwegian Wood etc]

Quincy Jones – The Birth Of A Band! (Mercury) [sounds like straight-up big city jazz, and I’ve rarely known Quincy to disappoint on these sets]

Quincy Jones – The Slender Thread OST (Mercury) [crime jazz OST for Sidney Poitier/Anne Bancroft movie – lots of mean street atmosphere and some prominent groovy Hammond by the sounds of it]

Video All-Stars – TV Jazz Themes (Pye Golden Guinea) [Skip Martin conducted early 60s crime jazz from the Miller/Muller stable – great sleeve, and sounds fine in a straight-up crime jazz fashion: Mancini’s Peter Gunn figures heavily]

Peter Howell – Alice Through The Looking Glass (Tenth Planet) [reissue of suite of music performed with John Ferdinando for a 1969 Ditchling Players’ theatre production of Lewis Carroll’s story – some lovely incidental stuff here]

Jeanie Greene – Mary Called (Atlantic) [needle drop suggests heavy gospel stylings on a mix of soulful and more raucous tunes]

Jimmy Cliff – Another Cycle (Island) [Not known Cliff’s early stuff to disappoint yet, so looking forward to this 1971 set – only ones I know by title are ‘Take A Look At Yourself’ and ‘Sitting In Limbo’ so looking forward to the rest]

Sarah Vaughan – Songs Of The Beatles (Atlantic) [jazz singer tackles the Fabs’ back catalogue with lots of fusion influences – I Want You (She’s So Heavy) and Come Together feature in the tracklist, so I’m assuming this will have its moments]

Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell - S/T (Capitol) [a cleaner copy than I had of this - well worth it for Morning Glory, Sunday Morning and Scarborough Fair]

John Zorn – Spillane (Elektra/Nonesuch) [after finding his Morricone set recently, glad to see this one in a cheap box – deconstructed crime jazz, blues and classical meltdowns, with Albert Collins, Kronos Quartet and Christian Marclay in attendence]

Keith Jarrett – G.I. Gurdjieff Sacred Hymns (ECM) [solo piano pieces from 1980]

John Scofield – Bar Talk (Arista) [Nimbus/Practical Hi-Fi Pressing of 1980 jazz-fusion with Scofield, Steve Swallow & Adam Nussbaum]

Dave Grusin – Mountain Dance (Arista GRP) [Nimbus/Practical Hi-Fi Pressing of 1980 electric fusion set]

The Honeycone - Where Do You Go For Your Sugar (Hotwax)
100 Proof Age Of SOul - Somebody's Been Sleeping (Hotwax)
Michel Polnareff - Je Suis Cherche Un Job (A/Z)
Tony Joe White - Groupie Girl (Monument)
Manfred Mann - A 'B' Side (Fontana) Can't remember the A side, which is too obvious to forget, but this has always been pretty whacked out.

Also, got a copy of Cliff's talk of the town after reading Jimmy's praise and been playing it for it's modness.

Had nothing better to do than trawl the local chazzers and assorted North London second hand shops this weekend. Picked up for a quid each from the Chazzers:

Original Tropicana Steel Band "Hot Steel" - Bonkers version of "Don't Leave Me This Way" and very nice take on "Spanish Hustle"
John Cameron "A Touch Of Class S/T" - on Brut (!) Records - couple of nice funky tracks on this
Harry Roche Constallation "Sometimes" - old VV classic ( "The Prowler" and "Carnaby Chick").
Samantha Jones "My Way" - budget comp of her Penny Farthing LPs with the very groovy "Today (Without You)".
Simpatico "Masquerade" - On A&M - Not seen this one before, but it's great - nicely arranged latin versions of "Holly Holy", "Masquerade", a few Roger Nichols tunes etc. all sung in spanish.

Then scored a load of odd Libraries from Flashback for 99p each.

Cavendish 2 - so-so gubbins, bit too testcard but couple of nice Syd Dales.
"Beat Bach" (Brull) - few nice tracks including a funky baroque "Saints Go Marching In"
"Decisive Action" (Hudson) - Some very nice Moog sounds.
"Flutes And Flugels" (DeWolfe) - Very laid back but very listenable.
"Nomination" (DeWolfe) - Very solid album - pretty much all of it has a nice vibe to it but top tracks are "That Funky Feeling" and "Time Machine".
"Easy Come Easy Go" (Weinberger) - Nice enough but no great shakes.
"Instrumental Pops Vol.5" (Apollo Sound) - The near-legendary Dick Hunter...
"Rock And Stones" (Sonimage) - best of the bunch, trippy drums on "Phazodrums" and great funky Hammond workout on "Motorock"

    Also for 99p
No To Co "Nikifor" - Polish band who are descibed as "Skiffle" though they sound much like The Association - lovely harmonies and on "The Green Bridge" some great fuzz guitar and brass stabs. Deffo my find of the week.

Trawled round loads of charities for the first time in ages and wished I hadn't bothered.

    Got:

Cozy Powell - And then there was skin 7" (spare)
Grandmaster Flash - White Lines 7"

    And the most interesting bit...

Greek Fire/Suzanne by the Kosniks - This is a locally pressed (Bedford) recording of a presumably local band doing a shadows style instrumental. When I got it it wouldn't play at all but after a good wash you could just about hear it under the hiss. Not amazing music and a horribly smashed record with very shallow grooves but strangely satisfying to know it was recorded round the corner over forty years ago.

Also found Cool Jerk by the Capitols but left it behind as it had been brutally mistreated.

The boot sales are now running dry..only got a few bits this weekend:

The Pips - Callin' LP on Casablanca from 1978. Bunny Sigler produced Philly Soul from Gladys Knight supporting cast. Bunny obviously put some effort into this so the songs are quite strong but still probably only of interest if you are into Philly Soul. I am.

Leo Kottke - S/T on Chrysalis 1977. Playing Leo's stuff always makes me want to throw away my guitar in frustration.

Tony Hatch - Beautiful in the rain LP on PYE 1967. 'Finito' is my choice on this.

El Coco - Brazil LP AVI 1975 - Rinder & Lewis get Brazilian on this but probably not their finest moments.

Richie Havens - End of the beginning LP 1976 - reasonable versions of Do it again and The Doobies - Long Train Running but can't imagine it will be spending much time on the turntable.

Stairsteps - 2nd Resurrection Lp Dark Horse. Slightly patchy effort from Keni and his brothers on George Harrison's label. A few nice tracks, 'The single 'From Us to You', 'tell me Why' and 'Trowin' Stones'

Alain Stivell - Resurrection of the Celtic Harp LP on Fontana. Early Stivell and pretty nice.

Kamakaze - Snakes/Spread it rmx 12" produced by Marley Marl. Great 12" with very familiar B side. Where have I heard it before?

Silent Phase - (The Theory of) LP R&S Great Stacey Pullen LP from 1995. Detroit rules!

This sentence has been bothering me all day.
Where do your fags come from if not from a packet?
    What does 'equivalent' mean?
What's equivalent of a ten-pack of marlboro reds if it's not a ten-pack of marlboro reds?

    I need more sleep!!!!
