Thread: VV sales section-good/bad idea?

    Default VV sales section-good/bad idea?

thought I'd start a thread here as i'm not sure everyone will see the mini-debate started in the trades section:

what do people think about a seperate sales section on the board??
personally, I don't see a problem if it's kept away from the trades section and has some kind of restrictions ie. regular posters only or a small fee to post there...

Yeah, i would be interested in that concept. Was thinking of doing a set sale type list this year, this would make it a lot "easier"

Yes, good idea for 'regular' posters only.

It seems strange that VV is a record collectors site that does not allow for said collectors to communicate what records they may have for sale. The trades section seems to be used by many to sift the chaff from their collections. I'd certainly rather give my money for a primo piece to a fellow Vulture than some faceless bod on the net.
I do understand there must be some security measures but posting up an 'items for sale' list or even an ebay link (Which would offer bay protection to the buyer at least) seems reasonable. Also i think a clear outline on grading would be good so everyone is straight on whats what...?
I've often wondered what some of the VV brigade are selling and most specifically what i've missed. I know it's been discussed before but I personally feel this one should go to the vote....

I can't see why not. I just assumed that there was some kind of legal thing where the moderators would have to take responsibility or give some kind of guarantee and that they were unwilling to do so. If there is no reason like that I really don't see why there shouldn't be a sales section.

Yep, I'd be behind that idea all the way. I usually don't have any quality trades so don't bother contacting vultures who are offering quality records.

I don't think anyone would particularly mind a sales section if it was well policed. However, I for one wouldn't want to give up any of my time to make sure rubbish know nothings (or even over eager or misguided posters) don't ruin it. I wouldn't expect Sermad or Sie Vulture to either.

Fair comment, and I can see how things could get spoiled, however, if the seller has 100+ posts surely this would be a reasonable safeguard?

Personally I think it's fine as it is.

But then, I like the Beatles more than the Beach Boys, so what do I know?

i think a sales and / or trades section would be very welcome, assuming it's not too much of a burden for the site administrators (legal responsibility, etc). other sites seem to manage this without any obvious problems, though.

i actually like the trades section, and it should still be available for those who want it - i've had some great trades from it - but i do think a sales section as well would be a useful addition.

One reason (amongst many) why this site is great are the trades/wants sections.

Bringing cash into the equation may well spoil the show...

yeah definately, I wouldn't want a sales section to replace the trades section in anyway, I just think the option would be good, I'd personally still post in the trades as much as sales I reckon...

well this is why I think any kind of sales section should be kept seperate from the trades section, so that the trades could carry on as it is....

I'm guessing the trades might start drying up if there's the easy opportunity of selling stuff...

I have always been a fierce critic of any proposed VV sales forum, but am warming to the idea after moving house and realising the vast amount of records I own that I do not listen to.

Thumbs down If It ain't broke...

I've both bought and traded records with fellow Vultures and I think it works pretty well as it is - using PM's.

I like It when a Vulture who contributes regularly to the forum says "I've got a new list - PM Me."

Having pages of Set Sales takes it to a whole new level and I dread to think what kind of Cyber Riff-Raff It would attract.

PM me if anyone has some nice 45's for sale.

Guys, we have been here before... I guess most things in life are cyclic - music, fashion etc, and I'll add questions about this topic to that growing list!

Jimmy Oddman's / Filthy Rich's comments regarding "legal responsibility / administration / fees / time spent undertaking moderation of the forum" really sum up my feelings on this.

We have stated over the years that we are not interested in getting involved in a sales section, for all the reasons given above.

The forum has had a trades section for around 3-4 years without issue and there are no current plans to change this arrangement. We keep a check on it and moderation of the posts is relatively simple.

Before I get a dozen replies about this, toys thrown out of prams etc, please reflect that if it was an easy thing to go and do, run, administrate etc etc, then why don't a whole host of other amateur/fan sites/forums run these things, preferring to leave it to the professionals, with both the time and infrastructure at their disposal, instead...???
