Default "in a gadda da vida" Cover Version query

    hello all

on friday last I did a gig in Gent (belgium) and one of the DJs played a stonking instrumental cover version of the perennial party favourite "In a gadda da vida", in an old-school soul style with a sax lead part. I didnt get around to asking what it was, does anyone have any clues?

Where did I read that 'In a gadda da vida' was a drunken slurred 'In the Garden of Eden'?

I would assume the IBB - as has already been mentioned. Originally from the first IBB album, this has just been booted (on the back of a Nas track which samples it) on a nice little 45.

Italian Library hero, Mario Molino, does a really heavy version. Super-long as well... takes up one full side of a record.

I reckon you may have heard the instro version of 'hip hop is dead' which is on nas' current defjam 12" - basically a cut-up of the iron butterfly thing with other bits which sound like they're off one of those djfood albums

is this where I say word?

excellent version done by the cast of the simpsons, when bart switches the church organist's music. including the 18 hour-long solo.

    maybe it's that one, no?

    or the Incredible Bongo Band.

    Yes.

But that Nas single irritates the hell of me. Poor lyrics, poor delivery, poor (i.e. no) arrangement.

It's off Schoolhouse Funk 2 on Cali-Tex Records - DJ Shadow's little funk label he has going. I have the compilation and if you can wait until tomorrow I can put an mp3 up here for you.

I think on the tracklisting it just says 'Unknown High School Band' as the artist.

Damnit, I just re-read the thread and realised you had said 'instrumental' version. This isn't. But it's a great version of 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' anyway, so here it is.

I was just about to mention Boney M. Strangely, I've never seen a copy though.

Yes, they were actually rather more successful with 'Painter Man' than The Creation were (though wasn't it a hit in Germany?) - I didn't even know it was a cover until I saw the Beat Club DVDs!

James Last does a nice Gadda Da Vida on one of his Non-Stop Dancing LPs - far too short, though.

both The Creation and The Smoke were much more succesful in Germany, Ian and the Zodiacs even lived there i think.

    *Edit*

I must have heard this tune 100 times, and I would have put money on it having an organ lead... but quite rightly, it IS a sax lead!
