Default madeline bell '60s LPs on Philips ... info please

    hello all

I've spotted 2 x Madeline Bell LPs on Philips, from the late 60s, up for sale. Bells-a-Poppin' and the other one. I already have some of her 45s from this period, but are these LPs worth having? Specifically, I dont really do "slow", so I'd like to avoid ending up with a whole load of smoochy ballads.

    opinions please??

They're both quality Brit Soul LPs along the same lines as Dusty's LPs from the same period. If you're looking for stuff strictly for the dancefloor probably best to stick to the singles like 'Picture Me Gone' (plus it's ace B side 'Go Ahead On') - you'd be missing out though I reckon!

Buy, buy, buy I say. You won't regret Beat The Clock ever. They're both just very high quality records (presume the second one you don't name is Doin' Things).

    Yes indeed

Thanks for the info - I'll be snapping em up, that is, if I dont get beaten to it by some other keen retro fan.

    Well worth picking up.

However, the S/T Phillips LP from 1971 is the pick of the bunch.

Comin Atcha from '73 is pretty damn good too. Great arrangements by John Paul Jones

Phil - if you've not got "picture me gone" on 45, then the "bells a poppin" LP is a good place to pick it up for cheap...

I've got the US LP I'm Gonna Make You Love Me....is this just the US version of Bells A Poppin' or Doin' Things?

Anyway, as previously suggested has that nice Dusty sounding soul to it. Nice version of Mercy, Mercy, Mercy and One Step At A Time is great.

edit: just noticed Sie's post and as my LP has Picture Me Gone on it then I presume its the Bells A Poppin' LP without the inclusion of Bells A Poppin' track! Bloody yanks and their messing up of UK LP's in the 60's!

Think that must be the self titled one already mentioned from '71 on Philips. Great stuff on it including 'If you didn't hear me the first time' which I have on a 45. Definitely her hardest LP to track down.

There's a track from it on my swap cd, as mentioned it's the S/T Phillips one from '71.

Here's a rip of the LP - Madeline Bell S/T

The artwork in Ian's messages is the one - I tried to embed some images but failed miserably.

There are two great versions on Calla - The Sandpebbles 'If You Didn't Hear Me the First Time (I'll Say It Again)' (Calla 148) (which is the original, I assume) and Johnny Thunder 'Verbal Expressions Of T.V.' (Calla 168).

Dusty and Madeline also did Love Power by the Sandpebbles - must have been big fans.

I prefer Dusty's take on 'Love Power' to The Sandpebbles' but I haven't heard Madeline's... I was wondering if there any further connection between Calla and Philips than the artists signed to the latter simply covering songs from the former. But probably not.
