Default What is the longest track on one side of a 7 inch single?

I was about to set the criteria for tracks being played at the 'Noodling' ILN session in April to be 'longer than a 7" single'. The theory being you just can't noodle on a 45 , you need the LP format to truly let yourself go.

    Then I realised that I didn't know:
    1. The longest track on a 45 (one side, so not those part 1 / part 2 tracks)
    2. Technically what is the longest you could cram on to a 45?
    3. Whether there is an example of a 7" at 33 that is longer?

    Any ideas?

    starter for 10 - 'Hey Jude' was 7' 05"

You'll be pleased to hear that that Solution 45 of 'Whirligig' is the full nine minute cut, Steve.

I know this has to do with sound quality. It's something like - cramming a lot of playtime onto a record means putting the grooves close together and that limits the frequency range you can hear when playing. I think??

Someone in the recording business should know more...

I know of a case with a noise recording that was supposed to be released as a 33rpm 10" but the pressing plant said it was impossible to fit the highest frequencies on it, so they recommended switching to 45rpm 12" instead...

or maybe it was the other way around.

So Rich, is Whirligig honestly the full 9 mins???! LP version is 8'57" by my watch....
    Might be the (60s/70s) winner.

Though, if John is right, then GFR's track would be 10'22", if the full version.....

I'll have a look later - not sure whether the time is on the label. Great record ...plays at 33 though!

Well, I was timing it by the video clock, so it isn't precise to the second, but I'm pretty sure it's unedited. You will have the definitive answer tomorrow.

Well, it's supposed to be played at 45. But I can play it at 33 if you really want to extend the agon... er, ecstacy. And pitch it down.

I still have a King Crimson 45 I bought in 1976 which was released as a taster for "The young person's guide to King Crimson"

    Epitaph 8.52 / 21st Century Schizoid Man 6.52

    Not bad value!

The Dixie Narco EP plays at 33 rpm, but is 10 minutes 30 odd seconds.

smaller grooves take away bass and volume. thats why common 45s at about 3 minutes often sound a lot better then the lp tracks...and thats why long 45s sound quiet thin...
can't give you the exact explanation in english though...

It seems that the max length for a track played at 45 is 9 min. Anything longer than that (so far discovered) is played at 33.

Surely 'Walk On By' by The Stranglers is a contender.

"Open Sesame" by Kool and the Gang on Contempo 7" is about nine minutes or so (done my back in and can't walk so I'm not in a position to check).

I'm sure "Private Investigations" by Dire Straits is the longest ever 45. It just seems to go on. and on. and on. and on. and on...
