Default let's have a shiny new finds thread -----

had an afternoon off work so went to the ever-reliable plastic wax and got this little lot:

some dodgy and some pretty fun never seen the two Philip Glass ones before (top left and the one below it) .. i enjoy his stuff and the like so looking forward to getting my head round these.

got the 'little boy blues' in the post, though -- great album.

    the 7's are:

    DONOVAN - "hurdy gurdy man"
SANDY NELSON - "quite a beat"
JOHNNY & THE HURRICANES - "beatnik fly"
1910 FRUITGUM CO. - "simon says"
DAVE, DEE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK & TITCH - "hold tight!"
THE TREMELOES - "let your hair hang down"
    APHRODITE'S CHILD - "babylon"
IKE & TINA TURNER - "river deep - mountain high"
    THE TORNADOS - "robot"
    THE TREMELOES - "helule helule"
    HOTLEGS - "neanderthal man"

Is it really that time of the week again?

I like Plastic Wax, a great shop. Now some may wish to scroll down as I am about to ask a question about the John Cougar album; seen this around a couple of times recently, is it worth looking at? I know nothing about his stuff other than one big hit he had, though I have an idea about where he sits on the musical map. Is it another lost classic, a la Abandoned Lunchonette? As I have a sneaking feeling I might like it. Considering the choice in Plastic Wax I'm guessing you bought this with a purpose.

At first I bought records, then I started to collect records; now I merely accumulate records.

Well, I didn't like to ask.

But I can talk; I actually have two copies, will be putting them back in the wild like a breeding pair. Though I understand there is some Boz Scaggs worth getting....?

    A few chazza 45s (25p ):

Sandy Nelson, 'Let There Be Drums/ Quite A Beat' (London, 1961)

Teach-in, 'Ding-a-dong/ Let Me In' (Polydor, 1975) - Speculative punt. I'm hoping for some Velvet Tinmine style goodness but I'm gearing myself up for disapointment

Tom Jones, 'Looking Out My Window/ A Minute Of Your Time' (Decca, 1968) - Spares a go-go on this if anyone wants a freebie.

Ron Grainer, 'A Man In A Suitcase/ Andorra' (Pye, 1967)

That Boz Scaggs elpee (Silk Sheets?) is a recommendation in that big thick Mojo book that came out about five years ago.

    ... So I'm told

Silk Degrees. But, hey it's friday night. You can be forgiven if your mind is on other things

(ahem, you're right about that book, I quote "Slick and soulful music for satin-sheet-sliding. Alledgedly caused hump (!) in the US population growth."

    Dear oh dear.

He's on the early Steve Miller Band albums, of course.

His first solo album's excellent country-hippy-funk-rock recorded at Muscle Shoals with memebers of the Allman Brothers:

'Moments' has its, er, moments, and he's got a reasonable version of 'Hercules' as well.

After that it''s all cocaine and yachts....

was pretty dry for a few weeks, but today had some luck...and for the first time found a couple of nice 45's as well

-almon jazz 8 and the sweethearts: the best lover - local soul from 1975, nice double sider, has a sort of a funky southern sound to it. loving the highway soul-label...

-the creations: soul satisfire: surprisingly tough funk here, with wah wah's and all. now i thought this label was european, anybody seen anything on it before?

-natural life: s/t - minneapolis jazz funk, small label stuff, not perfect but has some good moments

-catchy rhythms from nigeria - late 50's highlife / rumba etc. from nigeria, a lovely little 10"

-blue mitchell: bantu village - sa blue note press

-morris goldberg: urban jazz band - capetonian jazz session from 1975, morris goldberg paid a visit from new york to record this and it sounds good, a mixture of things with strong afro/latin influence

-the morris goldberg quartet: s/t - from the same year as the one above, but whereas urban jazz band has a bigger conceptual feeling, this one has a private press touch to it..recorded on loop street cape town and the band includes local students. rough production, very funky stuff..thanks for the tip platerpus!

-and finally..i don't know if this is a real "find" as i had to dish out a little bit of proper money for it. but it's one of those things locals often say they've only seen once or twice during the last 15-20 years or so. goes directly to my all time top ten, a fantastic lp from start to finish. "africa" has a majestic spiritual jazz feeling. intrestingly enough, billy brooks from america plays trumpet on this, same guy that gave us "fourty days"?

This lot over the past month or so - most of it from the local charity shops

    Brass Construction 1 and 2 - quasi-mint and I love number 1
The Sylvers Something Special - bof, nothing special
Colleen Hewett - powerful, funky rocky souly Reverend Lee

Roger Webb Free as Air - I've been after this since I saw first that Boddingtons advert so many years ago. I also heard it in an episode of the Sweeney. Dennis takes 'a bird' back to 'his gaff' and checks if the spaghetti is cooked by throwing it against the wall and seeing if it sticks. Thanks VV for letting me know what I was looking for.
Eugen Cicero Swinging Classics - Wicked Hungarian Rhapsody but just noticed I only have one of the two LPs
Truby Trio A GO GO - dancefloor latin d'n'b shaker
Dizzy on the Riviera - can't stop listening to this, especially 'Ole', what a tune!

Simaryp Skinhead Moonstomp - 'These boots...' ska style, not bad
Well dressed lady from Singapore? - groovy asian girly pop tune (with panting!) and top cover
Mina - I love her and this has a couple of great tunes on it - Bugiardo e incosciente and I problemi del cuore
Bobby and Betty - at last I can copy Mr Karminsky and drop the take off sequence over teenage chase!

Ros on Broadway - Hernando's Hideaway
    Mancini Symphonic Soul - classic
Lai A Man and a Woman - classic
Music for the dance crowd - TIME production with a couple of surprisingly good tunes, 'When Sonny comes strolling home' being my favourite. Shame about the quiet/flat pressing.

Happy hunting, time for me to head back to assignment city, Dx.

Nice find on the Grainer Wayne. Been going nuts over him recently - I love Poker Face off that LP.
