    Default Weekend finds 12/01/08

Had a mooch around some charity shops today and found some half decent stuff

Immaculate copy of this 'acid' folk rare on Mushroom from Andreas Thomopoulos More ebay food i reckon.

Some 45 action, nothing rare but for 50p a pop and in really good condition i'm not complaining and at least there are some keepers.

My first post of 'finds from the wild' since last March's 'lost record box' disaster....anyway quick sprint around some Coventry charities produced these for a quid each :

Rameses - Glass Top Coffin - Crackles a little, but what a lovely album !. Was a little apprehensive as the date is 1975, but this could've been recorded anytime between 1969 and then.

Cochise - Swallow Tales - Nice Prog meets Country set including future Procol string twanger Mick Grabham and pedal steel wizzard B J Cole .

Shiv & Hari - Yugal Bandi - Beautiful ragas played on Santoor, Tanpura and flute. Will probably rip this off for Paducah (my indo-folk 'thing').

Who - Meaty... - everyone knows this..

Movement, Mime, Music - BBC Records - Second one of these I've had - some great Radiophonic Workshop stuff on last 3rd of this.

McCartney - His best solo album ?

Plastic Ono Band - Live Peace In Toronto - Clapton's last bout of lusty soloing on here before JJ Cale-isms set in. Side 2 has some great Ono screaming over a) 12 bar riffing and b) feedback - ace !

Mickey Mouse Club - No needle drop yet, but 1976 date on this means I'm not holding my breath.

Also some 7's (Tunng, Who) and a book - How Deep Is The Ocean - Brian Wilson and Beach Boys interviews & Essays edited by Paul "Crawdaddy!" Williams.

    I "heart" Hanoi Rocks.

Always lumped in with hair metal but they are nothing of the sort.

They are the missing link between The New York Dolls and Guns N Roses.

I don't think any of the albums are great all the way through but each has 2 or 3 amazing tracks.

    Which one's did you bag?

And Indeed, are they your bag?

    It's all coming out now
Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

Don't judge a Disney record by its cover. I like the funky tracks Showtime and Mousecadence + the short theme, Mousecadence ever has a disco brake. Had actually hoped to keep the track Showtime a secret and use it as my anthem ...

Went to my first Record Fair today in Luton.

Amazing to see so many records neatly filed on tables. The places I normally go to they're falling out of torn cardboard boxes onto the grass; squeezed in between childrens bikes and bundles of WWF magazines.

Anyhow. Very pleased to pick up a mint Roundtable - Spinning Wheel for £30 and everyone on here is right...it's a bloody good listen throughout. The seller had two...

Paid a lot less for a mint New Elizabethans (Syd Dale) - Girl with The Golden hair - from the same seller. Liking this too.

Took a punt on a later (1979) MPS George Gruntz (with Jasper Van't Hof) - FairyTale .... initial displeasure at it sounding poorly sub-Weather Report have passed because I love the long slow track called 1001 Night.

Also picked up a 'haul' of pound bits.... including a couple I really liked from LJO's Country comp a while back (Glen Campbell and Dave Dudley..). Peggy Lee Guitars a La Lee, Samantha Jones comp and the 'Swinging Saga' comp....which has a great cover.

Took the opportunity of engineering works on the main rail line and got a free trip to Three Bridges via the bus replacement scheme (tee he) - so I saved about eight quid in fares.

So i visited my favourite charity shop there where all the vinyl is still ten pence a throw.

These are what i got today in the YMCA charity shop in Crawley -

    Singles

Diana Ross - My Old Piano (Motown) - great production by the Chic quys.Groovy.
Giorgio Moroder - Chase (Casablanca) - synthy Euro electro-pop
George "Bad" Benson "Supership" (CTI) - modern northern soul classic, and funky flipside "My Latin Brother"
Joe Tex - Ain't Gonna Bump No More (Epic ) - funky disco music
Medicine Head - Rising Sun (Polydor) - funky boogie
Kool and The Gang - Summer Madness (De Lite) - B side to lacklustre "Jones vs Jones" ,but this flip is a live synthy groove.
The Foundations - Baby Now That I've Found You (Pye)
Herb Alpert - Rise (A&M) - the parp parp man does disco funk
Cornershop - Brimful of Asha (Wiija) - went to number one this did!
Laurie Anderson - O Superman (Warner Bros.) - classic avant garde single that became a hit thanks to John Peel

    Albums

Henry Mancini - The Big Band Sound of .. (RCA Camden) - cool version of "Moanin'"
Cyril Ornadel - Stereo Spectacular Vol.2 (RCA) - funky "Walking The Dog" and a groovy "April In Paris"
Engelbert Humperdinck - His Gretest Hits (Decca) - yep Quando Quando Quando again, plus "Another Time Another Place"
Various Artists - The Hamlet Collection (A&M) - good comp. with Quincy Jones "Ironside" being the highlight
Jack Jones - Together (RCA) - not played yet but like his voice anyway, so poosibly a late nighter cooler albvum. Gosh, must be gettin' old liking Mr,Jones.
Joan Baez - On Vanguard (Vanguard) - a bit of a punt on this one.

So £1.60 for sixteen slabs of vinyl from vg+ conditon to near mint condition mostly .

Is that the one on the Morgan label? Any chance of a tracklisting? I want to see if it's the same stuff that came out on Amphonic. If not, I needs it!

Overly happy (in a stupid-arse way) to find these three at the tip:

Susan Sings Songs from Sesame Street (Wand)
Harald Winkler's Guitar Pops 2 (Telefunken)
The Electronic Organ of Jean Pierre Sabar (Ad Rhythm)

Can't wait to get home and spin 'em.

    Cheers gents.
The reason for my 'stupid-arse happy' phrase is because I collect Ad-Rhythm (even the shite ones) ...as I was born in Harrow. I knew all the shops /places mentioned in the old VV article.

I was mildly green when you found one up a few weeks ago and they're LP's I definitely want to get 'in the wild' rather than via Ebay.

Nowhere near a record player til later but the tracklisting with four Gainsbourgs plus A Touch of Velvet Sting of Brass is tantalising (though will probably disappoint).

Plus of course the Ad Rhythm standard 'original' composition by the artist...

I love the original Couleur Cafe ... so I'll get back to you ....

I also collect Harald Winkler / Norman Candler Telefunken LP's in the same way (no Ebay!)

I sneaked Harald's short 'Concerto D'Aranjuez' onto my first Xmas Swap CD.

And the 'Susan Sings' as a bonus.... a perfect VG+ friendly, minor-league hat-trick (IMHO) for £1.50.

Oh ...and I dropped two rubbish bags off while there.

I really like 'Swinging Creeper' on this one (though it's not actually Swinging Creeper, it's another Ventures track with the wrong title) - ever seen a copy of Guitar Pops 1? I haven't!

You should get a list together of the ones you haven't got Ian, i often find big runs of Ad-Rhythm LP's and leave them because i'm only after 'Baldwin Soul' and it's the only one i've never come across

PO, Record Fair, Charity and 'trade in a pile of booter chuff for records' finds:

The Deep LP is *whisper* a reissue but origs are so rare that I think this is the only way I'll hear it. Also I am now content that I have all four in the Joe Gibbs African Dub series - Ahhh - now I can relax

Sonny Bono LP is suprisingly great, the Clifford Coulet joins the ranks of 'my fave LPs on Impulse'. I think I may have pictured Lps Delta Sound before - sorry - but it is a superb library in any case
