    Default Duffy's new video

Did anyone catch the new video to 'Mercy' on C4 last night. Definitely one for all you Northern Soul folk to embrace or scorn..... some 'top' dancing ending in flames. I'd post up a link, but there isn't one yet. Retro is the new New.

What a toss video. theres only 3 guys dancing along to it (i know one of them and he'll be getting an earful from me when i next see him!) and no soulie worth their salt would dance in that style to that rhythm...

Hasn't Sam Brown already tried to make a career out of peddling this kind of bottle-blonde retro soul-lite, failed & had to resort to singing for Jools Holland's big band?

Oh & Carmel (McOurt) did it better about 20 years ago.

it's OK to head out for wonderful, but on your way to wonderful, you're gonna have to pass through all right. When you get to all right,
take a good look around and get used to it, because that may be as far as you're gonna go.

Have to say if I leave my cynical old bastard hat at the door, I kind of like the song and the video - they both stay with you. BTW - I count at least 10 dancers in the wide views.... anyway, I rather like the effect of only a few people in such a large space.

Self styled soulies have a problem with cameras due to a traumatic experience at The Casino when cameras were allowed in. In those days of course the cameras were rather large and bulky, hand cranked and mounted on prams or dollies. They also required every light in the place to be turned on and every Klieg in the Lee Lighting warehouse to be sent up north. The ensuing heat combined with volatile talc set everyone's polyester Spencers on fire.

Every div who's arrived on the scenes since than feels obliged to condemn any intrusion" by the real world into their fiedfom. They of course having had a personal invite from Russ Winstanley to join the underground and absolutely no way were they influenced by the sight of Wigan's Chosen Few performing Footsee on TOTP.

If the Duffy single was available on vinyl I'd be playing it this Saturday at the Woodsie Social Club at Blacktrackin'. Actually it is so down to HMV at Lunch time.

Can't really decide whether I like it. It's cute enough, but it's overlong, and just a bit too 'tidy' for me. If it'd come out of nowhere it might be a bit more interesting, but it seems a too calculated to fit the current scene and a certain type of music fan. She certainly doesn't display much of a real passion for the music she's imitating.

that little rap bit is almost as stomach churning as madonna / robbie williams (glad I can't hear it properly)

I'm sure I saw a thing about her on S4C news last summer when I was in Wales - I seem to remember there was a mega lo budget video of her wandering about the fields of Llyn with her boyfriend looking pretty windswept. Miles cooler than ersatz Northern rubbish

Are there any black British women soul singers who are getting backing from their record company like Amy, Joss, Natasha Bedingfield and the rest?
i can only think of Corinne Bailey Rae, and she's been quiet for a bit.
Jamelia has no record deal and one of the country's great soul voices, Mica Paris, seems to have given it up as a bad job and is presenting daytime TV instead.

Sadly it looks like she's being steered down the commercial toilet... It's a shame, I quite like her voice but the backing band, video and general way she's being packaged is all very plastic

If The Man really believes this is the kind of track that has folk doing back-drops and spins and the like whilst lobbing down the talc He is deluded. No groove, no soul, no guts ANS she still comes on to my ears at least as someone who learned to sing from Mariah 'Satan' Carey records.

YES to Babycart's comments on why the hell there aren't more black British women getting a shove when this kind of soul-lite pap can get so much money behind it.

Oh, and is it just me, or does anyone else find the whole northern dance thing just ever so slightly insularly homo-erotic. Where are the GIRLS for Chrissakes! All those well-groomed mod boys spinning wheels around each other. I may of course just be jealous that I could never begin to dance that well, but I satill think it's slightly fishy meself.

It's great pop music, i like it I won't buy it and i probably won't like it when i've had it rammed into my ears constantly which is inevitable imo music loving teachers at the school i work are already whispering to me about her thinking they are cool

I think the video is pretty shit and the dancers are shit (i don't believe it's that much of a dying art, there are some incredible dancers around !)- just a really weak, derivative low to mid budget blandfest.

but i would rather this stuff was topping charts to be honest

I should imagine she'll pop up on the Mark Ronson tour, supplying guest vocals on some numbers (as she did on the last tour - well the Leeds date anyway)

Radio has gone right down the pan at the moment. Particulary daytime Radio1.
This is by far one of the better things out there at the moment.

    Congrats to Bernard Butler.

Eska has a great voice - she recently sang on the Elektrons album which I think was massively overlooked, think she's done stuff with Bugs in the Attic too....
