Default weekend finds - 26/27 Jan

    weekend starts here!!!

the last finds thread has morphed into a north v south and brum digging guide so i thought i'd start a shiny new one...

here's some stuff from today, some charities and some trade in prime cuts:

the DISCOTHEQUE one sounds ace -- real heavy/ beaty stuff. sounds much more fun than the usual beat-sploitation cheapies!! havent got stuck into the "Performance" OST yet -- looking forward to it.
Got the NEW HEAVENLY BLUE for a tenner on the net -- really fun album. funky country jazz rock (?!?) from Dave Brubeck's son
the bottom three are from charities - the far left is a christian rock/folk double album. nice cover but dull music. thought the "top of the poppers sing gilbery o'sullivan" might have a good cover of "Too much attention" - but its shit!! the WORLD TOP 12 has a nice "Jeepster" by T-REX.

Ooooh - nothing better than the smell of a fresh thread on a Friday. Gets the weekend started just right.

Now, if you ever happen to find yourself in Birmingham....

At first I bought records, then I started to collect records; now I merely accumulate records.

A quick nose around the charities in Shepton Mallet netted the following:

The Shadows - 20 Golden Greats
Mambo Jambo - Perez Prado Orchestra
The Wonderful Sound of Jorge Costa Pinto Orchestra (Aquarius and a few others that might be interesting)
Maestro's All Steel Band - The Caribbean Sound
There was also an Esso steel drum LP which I thought I picked up but didn't. Still upstairs in the Sally Army shop if anyone's passing.
Julie Felix - Going to the Zoo
    Julie Felix - Flowers
Jack Hawkins - Everything is Beautiful (Same as the Psychedelic 70's LP which I also have, therefore maybe a spare)
The Biddu Orchestra - Summer of '42/Northern Dancer 45
Peter Maffay - Du/Jeder Junge braught ein Mädchen 45 (starts off well but... crap. At least he has a nice haircut on the pic sleeve).

Not listened to any of the LPs yet but they were all dirt cheap.
I also left behind a cool-looking Belafonte LP where he looks like Sean Connery in Dr.No on the front.

As I was looking through the records at the chazza I visit weekly which is normally shite I heard one of the shop grannies say 'we've sold over 60 records today and yesterday!'...I carried on looking (grinding my teeth)..

    Hendrix - Radio 1 Sessions 2LP
    Lee Hazelwood LP on MFP
Gunter Kallman - best of (with daydream) - never had this VG fave unbelievably
    Swell Maps - Marineville
Ravi Shankar in New York LP
Trace - Birds LP (Dutch prog)
Richard Digance - 2nd & 3rd LPs on Transatlantic...couple of reasonable tracks on 2nd LP

    some 7s
Fierce Panda - Mortal Wombat EP ft Furries
Georgie Fame - Daylight (decent take on Womack classic with funky b side)
Noel Murphy - Irish songs EP on Columbia 1966 from singer on Soho folk scene
Watt Nichol - Remote Control on Transatlantic SP16 (call for Scottish independence!)

Yeah, it plays on your mind what you probably have missed (but who would leave that Hendrix LP behind!), but at least you got some goodstuff. The Swell Maps & Fierce Panda EP show that some classic (real) Indie is slowly being released back into the wild.

Very nice Dutch jazzfunk a la Herbolzheimer

Nice perky gospel covers, drum break on Lill Babs, Ronnie Cole's Summer Breeze is cheesilicious

The ultrarare Brief Encounter, Finn Savery is dry Danish funky fusion

Funky covers of Wade in the water on Millie Foster and Superstition on Reggae party

Some random flamenco record, couldn't resist the sensitive cover art...

Default Last weeks Bushey record fair finds in this weeks thread

Hardcore folk LPS,£2 apop, I'm enjoying looking out for these at the moment, the type of records the band/artists stuck in the boot of the car and sold at the folk clubs when they performed(often you'll find them signed)

Pick off the bunch here for me is the Frankie Armstrong, esp.the song anti carol.

Dingle label pretty well know, but I've not picked up anything on Long man records before. Looks like the sorta label that would sacrifice a goat at the launch party

    Nice Jap Jazz LP

Various odd and interesting singles picked up at 3 for £1 will give more details and listing when I've heard them all, and if any are any good

Borrowed these from a mate and stall holder at the record fair, can't see what all the fuss is concerning these, the american Fuzz acid etc is quite interesting but the Tapestry doesn't say much I(we) don't know already

Cheaper U.S Paramount Affinity lp from the bay £20.

Only had chance to play it once. Not keen on the live section as they've chosen to cover pop tunes in a folk setting so skipped that bit...Yuk!

But two or three songs I remember liking yes. Worth £2 for sure.

I really miss having a local folk club. The pump house folk night in Watford closed down due to lack of interest some time ago now, they still have an open mic thing giong on but it's not the same obviously. The chap that ran the club kept booking duffers (in my opinion). However on the last farewell cos we're closing, he booked Martin Cathy,Norma Waterson and daughter Eliza. A cue had formed out the door and when the organizer turned up seeing the cue he pronounced to everyone waiting, in a loud voice 'Well, if only we'd have had these numbers every week we wouldn't be having to close down' he was very irritated and I did feel sorry for him, but maybe he hadn't been booking the right artists.

The place has great acoustics, no mics needed, and the gig was fantastic !! A lot of emotion going on, and Martin was genuinely upset at another folk club winding up.

In the last few years though I feel folk music has picked up a larger following with trendy folk comp CD's etc and I'm giving serious thought to approaching the pump house with a view to start one up again. I think it would be fitting to book Cathy again for the re-opening night.

I ran a DJ night for a while at the same venue, so i know the place and the volunteers who keep it going. They have a trad jazz night which is always packed, so that's encouraging with a view to trying a folk night again.

For me it's a real old school experience..pint of bitter, packet of peanuts and surreal conversation with the original bearded freaks.. not the trendy D.J ones

Totally agree. I saw another copy recently & was wondering whether to pick it up for trade/sale. I think I'll listen to the A side again.

Yeah, folk almost needs to be live in a pub.

Oh yeah, & as you live in Watford aren't you on the cusp of the North/South divide? North or South Watford?

Folk is always best live in a pub with a decent pint or two.

Of the morth / south divide thingy i am down in Exeter at the moment for a conference at the uni and having some spare time today got these for 30p a throw in a chazzer (so still some surprises to be had) -

Mother Earth - Stoned Woman (Acid Jazz LP)
Galliano - Nothing Has Changed (Talkin' Loud 12" single)
The Detroit Sound - Introducing The .. (Contour LP)
The Biddu Orchestra - Serenade For Lovers (Hallmark LP)
Martin Denny - 20 Golden Hawaiian Hits (Liberty LP)
Cate Brothers - In One Eye And Out The Other (Asylum LP)
Rod Stewart - Sing It Again Rod (Mercury LP)
Sylvester - Step III (Fantasy LP)
A Salute To Ludwig Koch (BBC Wildlife LP)

Pleased getting the Mother Earth and Sylvester LPs in VG+ condition as first is so funky and second is surprisingly so soulful. Others are more speculative punts and hoping the Martin Denny turns out to be good.

    Back home on Monday evening.

it's easy to post up these random finds but wheat and chaff are two words that often spring to mind here...

"No" and "Need" are two more.

Live and let live eh mate? All posts are welcome, as long as there's some enthusiasm, surely?

A sneering and elitist attitude serves neither you nor the site well and it'd be bloody hard to encourage new blood to get involved if we all adopted such an exclusive (and pretentious) tone.

The Watford Gap is in Northamptonshire. Its a popular misconception that the north/south divide is in Watford (a little too south, even taking account of the introspective Londonites)

Gentlemen, gentlemen; we have had this debate many times before, and we all have a view upon it. Let's leave it to another day and get on with the finds. It ain't a competition and if people like what they find and want to show enthusiasm for it, so be it. Now, Fly and Dave - kiss and make up.

    As you were.

    Default Wheat & chaff separation..................

Lots of leg work over the last couple of days.......

10 pence......................... Good, but don't rate this too highly, but for 10p I rest my case o the league table.

Recorded in London - circa '69 this is vintage Strata East radical jazz stylings. Really pleased

More of the same in a way, this is a great LP, that is now a double. Don't sleep

Really pleased to bag this Christine Perfect dominated LP for less than £15.00, think it averaged at £10.00. Still need to fully induldge, but a great LP I think!

Best record I boughtthis week?! Re-Issue - classic blues that I had to work for 'cause I found the empty sleeve and had to hunt the LP £1 chazzer banger.

This is a stone cold killer comp on DJM. It has the bomb that is Just a Little Bit - Roscoe Gordon and the Pearlettes - Duchess of Earl. This is my bag

Check ol' Jimmy with a sound burger type thang in his hand!

You need this record...... Real shop current buy.

I mentioned this in another thread, you all know it no doubt, this is

    Pointer Sisters.........on good form

    seven mins of madness

It was there so I could't halp making double figures on this UK hammond jam

    Classic Miles...........

Never got around to listening to my 1st copy of this Randy California LP - should I bother??

Quite a few more, but it is Saturday, need to keep some in reserve in case I shit out tomorrow
