only 300? That sounds pretty shocking, but if I took out all the ones I'm never gonna play, I'd probably be down to 100

I think its a bit of a comfort thing...nice to rummage through piles of chuff and find something good! Recreating the ultimate chazza experience in the comfort of your own home

Lordy Lord. I'm on about 4500 Lps . . . and could really do with shedding at least 500 of the blighters.

My wife informs me I should sell stuff before buying more.

I fear she may be right.

I clear out every year, but also keep adding, bit like a revolving door. My tastes have changed with age, so recently i've been buying Soul, Funk, Afro funk, Brazilian etc & selling Indie stuff.

So what was her reaction yesterday when you returned from the Chazza with another pile of the blighters?

I meant 'only' in the sense of 'that's still quite a lot if they're all decent albums' I've probably got upwards of 3000 lps, and more than half* of them are total drek, but I'm rubbish at clear outs

*WAAAAY more than half...I must have ten private pressings of school choirs that I just couldn't leave behind, cos, well they're rare, innit

I need to get rid of some but I find it increasingly hard to sell the stuff on ebay, nobody wants the average stuff for 99p a pop.

Well done Sevi, a hard thing to do but you must feel like you have a very tidy garden now showing off your prize-winning roses.

I've given about 700 albums/12's back to charity shops in the last few weeks after I realised the same fact.

    Loads more to go too!

So true, so true. I know we all may think that our collections are worth a fortune, and are a good investement, but if you tried to sell most of it you'd make a loss I reckon

Not if you bought it for cheap in the first place.

Anyway I'm gonna sell my chuff as a job lot ebay with a few Sunbeam reissues in their to make it look good.

I'm impressed at anyone reducing from 1500 to 300. Thats an 80% reduction. Though if you are only 24 then maybe you've a few regular apartment moves going on to keep volume low through discipline. I always used to have a cull before moving.

The problem is when you buy a house and settle down, then the middle age spread can effect the collection as much as the waistline.

yes. the sad truth. unless of the really rare bits i sold on ebay i got almost nothing for the rest.

i couldn't be arsed to sell them all individually. so i mostly did packages with around 50 lp's. mixed thing with a couple of "rare" lp's, some average stuff and maybe 10 crappy ones.

but they're gone which is reward enough

I'm at about the 4000 mark and im moving the second time with in a year. This time im moving in with my girlfriend so space is stretched to the limit. I think im going to have to consider trimming my collection down a bit to make room for my on going buying.

Don't forget to have a mate make a remark something like:
"phwoar!!! what a wicked sick ill raer collection, I'm so lucky, I was idly surfing the net when I chanced across this luvverly lot, the gods must be shining down on me!!!"

Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

have found discogs.com good for some more recent stuff, comps, etc. the ability to easily see how many people are after a record and how many other copies are up for sale is great.

    yep.
I lived in flats all through my 20s with records piled up everywhere. Moving was a nightmare so I tended to stay put in one place as long as possible.
Last place before buying the house was a basement flat (no separate access) in a house with about a dozen steps leading to the front door. Shifting all the gear from that place was hell but there was some comfort in the fact that it was all going to a house with a dedicated room for my collection.

problem is now that the room is bursting at the seams.

Why is 50% of this board's content made up of posts along the lines of "my wife isn't happy that [insert negative comment pertaining to soem aspect of record collecting]?"

As a guy with a wife who actually likes music and also gets excited when I get hauls of good music, i find this perplexing to say the least.

You lucky sos & so - but I reckon your in a very small minority

Any chance of applying to that wife swap show so I can drain all our funds on records, guilt free, without skulking around and smugglin' them in

Haha... honestly though, I would never have married a woman who wasn't down with the cause, if you know what i mean. Any comments along the lines of "why do you have so many records" would instantly be met with "I think we need to talk", as they say in stupid American sitcoms.
