John Coltrane and Archie Shepp - The New Thing at Newport
Mentioned this earlier in the week. Been on the turntable quite a lot
The Coltrane track is actually a little dissapointing but the Archie Shepp stuff is pure class. Challanging in places but underpinned but a rock solid rythm section

The Better Beatles Also mentioned this in another thread. A bunch of kids in Omaha decide to cover a bunch of Beatles tunes in their kitchen and record the results on tape. Using keyboards and bass but no guitar the music is in a class of its own. Not really anything like the Beatles. And over the top of the music is some of the coldest most deadpan female vocals you've ever heard. They make Nico sound like Areatha Franklin. Its brilliant

Can't remember the full name of this one. Has the Bond theme in full, which is always nice, The Girl with Sun in her Hair, which I love and Born Free.

Chico Arnez - Non Stop Dance Party
I'm sure that most of you will know this one. Couldn't pass it up for a pound. Great moments but too much of the man singing if I'm really honest. Soul Finger is the one to watch though

Don Hilo and the Hawaiians - Song of the Islands
Pretty dreadful but I handed over £1 on the strength of the sexy lady on the cover. Another record to join the other cheesecake covers

Wally Whyton - Childrens Songs
Wally Whyton used to sing for the Vipers before they went and became the Shadows. He then sang on TV and released a series of records for children. I love his voice and the folk/skiffle arragements. My daughter likes him too and as long as it keeps the likes of the Wiggles at bay I'm happy

The Flying Lizards - Money
Odd to turn this up in the same week as the Better Beatles. Always loved this track

Not got much recently due to work and stuff but was pleased to break the fast with this selection of charity shop/record shop/swapsies/late birthday present finds..

Inter Relation - The Scottmen Plus: Nice jazzy lib, and my first Peer one..

Roots - Nucleus: Pretty funky British jazz/rock fusion, the title track is my favorite so far.

Hard As Rock - Knockout: Sounds pretty much how you would imagine, library rock with a few breaks and nice moments.

Light My Fire - Woody Herman: A bonus surprise record in my parcel with nice big band funky jazz especially on the title track..



Just Wanna Rock N Roll - Jose Feliciano: My only charity find (of any note) this week. Not seen it before, certainly isn't as common as his other LPs but it is worth picking up. On a couple of tracks Jose puts the acoustic away and lets rip on an electric guitar especially on the funky "No Jive" and equally funky "Cant Get Next To You"..

Yellow Bird Is Dead - 20th Century Steel Band: bit disappointed with this as i love "Tropicana" but this leans a bit to much towards disco.

Jazz Impressions Of Japan - Dave Brubeck Quartet: Mainly straight Jazz but has a few nice moments.

I wanna Get Funky" - Albert King: A mix of straight blues, funky blues and just funk. Its got that Memphis Stax sound which i like.



The Raven Speaks - Woody Herman: The 2nd Herman LP for me this week and i picked this up as id enjoyed the one above and was glad i did. 2 Herbie Hancock covers including "Fat Mama" which is reeet funky. All round a great big band jazz LP.

Third - Portishead: A late birthday present from my brother. Not had chance to digest it properly and so far I've only needle dropped it whilst fighting a hangover. Sounded dark and atmospheric and i wasn't expecting the ukulele song

Ege Bamyasi - Can: The only Can I've got is a battered almost unsustainable copy of "future years". Been on the lookout for some more stuff for a while now but if i found any it was always way out of my price budget. Therefore i was very pleased to get this at a reasonable price and even more pleased to listen to it.. It really is feckin good, I'm sure its old news to a lot of people but i now need more Can in my life. What other LPs have they done in this vein? Whats worth picking up (if i ever see it)? Vitamin C has been swimming round in my head all weekend.. tis the drums i think..

On a vaguely connected theme, anyone seen Persepolis yet?

Areally great animated piece about growing up in Iran in the late 70s onwards, and the way in which opposition to one kind of dictatorship spawned another even uglier beast. Manages to be both political and very personal, funny and very visually lyrical all atthe same time. Highly recommended.

Just got round to picking up the Portishead on Saturday...listening to it now for the 4th time or so as I type this. Really liking this sound, which leans towards Can at times, which leads to....

Can....I only own Ege Bamyasi and Tago Mago. Tago Mago is definitely of the same vein so you'll want that one as well (a track is on the AEIOU 2 mix if you're familiar with that mix?) Folks with more knowledge can recommend others as there are other worthy LP's.

Strange finds this sunday on a nearby fleamarket, an elderly woman with a nunch of 60s/70s records had two selaed copies of ASOKA, Swedish prog recently released (2005) by Mellotronen in Stockholm, this album is still in print? A limited vinyl LP from 2005? Strange, how did it end up there? Also got a copy of The Mamas and The Papas, US orig on Dunhill, Never scored that group on vinyl before

yeah, was from a boot but you can all calm down, it was relatively expensive but in great nick.
Have bought from the guy before (he only does two boot sales a year), and he told me to make him an offer, which i did, he knows the value, his general rule of thumb is half the book price, then half it again, so you can work that one out
I wanted to make a decent offer since i know he's been buying records since 1960 & the offer must have worked as i've finally got an invite to his house.
Will keep you posted on what happens, might take the camera with me.

There's nothing like being just in the right place when a whole box of goodness is removed from the boot & plonked on a table, or so I've been told Why can't the boot organizers just not open until a sensible time, say 8am, surely they don't like having to set up at 6am or even earlier

Notwithstanding, it's so exciting this time of year with the first of the big boots starting up & lashings of winter-stored vinyl being released back into the wild
