He had the resident band at a holiday camp in Norfolk, I think. Picked up one of his 45s last year at a booter.

We know when a mate buys it for you too.
Is it good? If I had a drummer like that in my band I'd be a very happy man![]()
"Not only that but the WHOLE COVER is UNCREASED with only 2 or 3 TINY creaselines near the opening edge about half way down!!!! In the same place (about half way down the opening edge), there is an absolutely TINY and PERFECTLY repaired split" (xxxrecords)
Holiday Camp's still there - Essex, not Norfolk, my mistake:

Can't remember the 45 being that great - nice picture cover, though. If I had any idea where it was I'd post it up!![]()

Not had much chance to do any serious digging this week
But I have managed to bring home:
John Coltrane and Archie Shepp - The New Thing at Newport
Mentioned this earlier in the week. Been on the turntable quite a lot
The Coltrane track is actually a little dissapointing but the Archie Shepp stuff is pure class. Challanging in places but underpinned but a rock solid rythm section
The Better Beatles Also mentioned this in another thread. A bunch of kids in Omaha decide to cover a bunch of Beatles tunes in their kitchen and record the results on tape. Using keyboards and bass but no guitar the music is in a class of its own. Not really anything like the Beatles. And over the top of the music is some of the coldest most deadpan female vocals you've ever heard. They make Nico sound like Areatha Franklin. Its brilliant
John Barry Orchestra
Can't remember the full name of this one. Has the Bond theme in full, which is always nice, The Girl with Sun in her Hair, which I love and Born Free.
Chico Arnez - Non Stop Dance Party
I'm sure that most of you will know this one. Couldn't pass it up for a pound. Great moments but too much of the man singing if I'm really honest. Soul Finger is the one to watch though
Don Hilo and the Hawaiians - Song of the Islands
Pretty dreadful but I handed over £1 on the strength of the sexy lady on the cover. Another record to join the other cheesecake covers
Wally Whyton - Childrens Songs
Wally Whyton used to sing for the Vipers before they went and became the Shadows. He then sang on TV and released a series of records for children. I love his voice and the folk/skiffle arragements. My daughter likes him too and as long as it keeps the likes of the Wiggles at bay I'm happy
The Flying Lizards - Money
Odd to turn this up in the same week as the Better Beatles. Always loved this track
"Record collecting is no mere hobby, no innocuous leisurely diversion. It is a feverish passion bordering on dementia, driving those under the influence to irrational, compulsive, fanatical extremes."

Not got much recently due to work and stuff but was pleased to break the fast with this selection of charity shop/record shop/swapsies/late birthday present finds..
First off, the swapsies (thanks Julian)
Inter Relation - The Scottmen Plus: Nice jazzy lib, and my first Peer one..
Roots - Nucleus: Pretty funky British jazz/rock fusion, the title track is my favorite so far.
Hard As Rock - Knockout: Sounds pretty much how you would imagine, library rock with a few breaks and nice moments.
Light My Fire - Woody Herman: A bonus surprise record in my parcel with nice big band funky jazz especially on the title track..
Just Wanna Rock N Roll - Jose Feliciano: My only charity find (of any note) this week. Not seen it before, certainly isn't as common as his other LPs but it is worth picking up. On a couple of tracks Jose puts the acoustic away and lets rip on an electric guitar especially on the funky "No Jive" and equally funky "Cant Get Next To You"..
Yellow Bird Is Dead - 20th Century Steel Band: bit disappointed with this as i love "Tropicana" but this leans a bit to much towards disco.
Jazz Impressions Of Japan - Dave Brubeck Quartet: Mainly straight Jazz but has a few nice moments.
I wanna Get Funky" - Albert King: A mix of straight blues, funky blues and just funk. Its got that Memphis Stax sound which i like.
The Raven Speaks - Woody Herman: The 2nd Herman LP for me this week and i picked this up as id enjoyed the one above and was glad i did. 2 Herbie Hancock covers including "Fat Mama" which is reeet funky. All round a great big band jazz LP.
Third - Portishead: A late birthday present from my brother. Not had chance to digest it properly and so far I've only needle dropped it whilst fighting a hangover. Sounded dark and atmospheric and i wasn't expecting the ukulele song
Ege Bamyasi - Can: The only Can I've got is a battered almost unsustainable copy of "future years". Been on the lookout for some more stuff for a while now but if i found any it was always way out of my price budget. Therefore i was very pleased to get this at a reasonable price and even more pleased to listen to it.. It really is feckin good, I'm sure its old news to a lot of people but i now need more Can in my life. What other LPs have they done in this vein? Whats worth picking up (if i ever see it)? Vitamin C has been swimming round in my head all weekend..tis the drums i think..
Now celebrating over 1000 posts of nonsense.....

Nice sixties sunshine pop that i dismissed at first but is a grower.
Shocking Blue - Venus / Hot Sand (Carriere)

That's how it all starts, y'see . . . give 'em a little bit of (hypothetical) power and it all goes to their heads.
On a vaguely connected theme, anyone seen Persepolis yet?
Areally great animated piece about growing up in Iran in the late 70s onwards, and the way in which opposition to one kind of dictatorship spawned another even uglier beast. Manages to be both political and very personal, funny and very visually lyrical all atthe same time. Highly recommended.
To infinity - and beyond!
Run out of shaving cream so went down to Superdrug and saw that the heart Foundation chazzer was open - found spanking new unplayed Phase 4 albums - six for a quid.
best of the bunch -
Roland Shaw - Themes For Secret Agents (so have a spare now for somebody)
Roland Shaw - More James bond In Action
Stanley Black - Exotic Percussion (a mint up)
the others
Ronnie Aldrich - That Aldrich Feeling
Ray martin - The Sound of Sight
Roland Shaw - Westward ho!
plus -
James last - trumpet A Go Go (Polydor)
James last - Sax A Go Go (Polydor)
Dakota Staton - dakota (World Record Club)
and for £3
Popshopping 2 (Crippled Disc Hot Wax) - an amazing collection of Germand advert music!
Feel happier already
An early visit to City Thameslink lost property dept to pick my phone up tomorrow. Will go by coach up there early and train back for a monthly lunch meet (FTLC - First Tuesday Lunch Club) with colleagues and friends..
Probably no time to go digin' but got lots to go through anyway.
Now to enjoy this sunny bank holiday.![]()

Just got round to picking up the Portishead on Saturday...listening to it now for the 4th time or so as I type this. Really liking this sound, which leans towards Can at times, which leads to....
Can....I only own Ege Bamyasi and Tago Mago. Tago Mago is definitely of the same vein so you'll want that one as well (a track is on the AEIOU 2 mix if you're familiar with that mix?) Folks with more knowledge can recommend others as there are other worthy LP's.
"Don't get involved in the f**kin' chat pages. It's just full of arseholes talkin' sh*te non-stop"
Saturday I gave up playing cricket to help the missus at one of her film events (brownie points for later in the season) and took an hour or so off to visit a couple of neighbourhood antique shops. Saw some great old turntables but unfortunately my phone battery died so no camera action. Here is the pick of the crop. Full descriptions on my Flickr page.

Strange finds this sunday on a nearby fleamarket, an elderly woman with a nunch of 60s/70s records had two selaed copies of ASOKA, Swedish prog recently released (2005) by Mellotronen in Stockholm, this album is still in print? A limited vinyl LP from 2005? Strange, how did it end up there? Also got a copy of The Mamas and The Papas, US orig on Dunhill, Never scored that group on vinyl before
Blimey, was the jethro toe from a boot? How much?
Anyways, went to 2 car boots, few charities and a record fair.
GUITAR KALEIDSCOPE- PHILIP JOHN LEE- on Chapter One ,one ok track with tablas here.
BREAD - first lp,not too bothered about this
WELCOME TO HELL - VENOM - brit heavy metal.
RITA COOLIDGE- first lp,bit average on first listen
AFRO ROCK FESTIVAL- Contour VV classic.
Car Boot in Whitchurch was just so full of record hunters, heavy competition, bit uninspired.got fairly crackly copies of
THEM- HERE COMES THE NIGHT
THE LOCOMOTIVE- RUDIS IN LOVE- a side is f***ed
BRITT EKLAND- pic disc
PROCOL HARUM- WHITER SHADE OF PALE- clean copy and the bee sides cool.
another car boot, Vinyl seems to be quite thin on the ground at the boots these days.(does everyone say that?)
GROOVIN WITH MR BLOE- on DJM,mint un groovy.
DONOVAN- CATCH THE WIND- hallmark cheapy for 25p.
some crap XIAN lps and then the record fair, not as bad as usual.
MATCHING MOLE- first lp,canterbury jazz
DR JOHN- GRIS GRIS- OG for £3,plays nice.
BAD NEWS LP- couldnt leave this for 2 quid.
yeah, was from a boot but you can all calm down, it was relatively expensive but in great nick.
Have bought from the guy before (he only does two boot sales a year), and he told me to make him an offer, which i did, he knows the value, his general rule of thumb is half the book price, then half it again, so you can work that one out
I wanted to make a decent offer since i know he's been buying records since 1960 & the offer must have worked as i've finally got an invite to his house.
Will keep you posted on what happens, might take the camera with me.
managed to get up just before seven to hit the biggest boot of the year in our area-all kind of things were turning up as the dealers [ most from out of town ] descended on Lancaster - i was lucky to be at a few cars just as the records came out and managed to pull most of these for 50p a go [ right money to pay at a bootie !!]
ozzie hall-a visit with-nice version of take five / rest is terrible !
archie shepp-on this night [ jazz goodness]
richie havens-something else again [ one of the few i never had ]
pentangle-first-a spare og in pretty nice shape...
smokey robinson-tears of a clown [ later press] dittio forever changes and a pair of ashley hutchings connected albums 'morris on' and 'son of morrison' - not for me i'm afraid - bit too trad folk..
session men - beatles covers...ronnie ross and bill le sage - had this ages ago - looking forward to the jazz take on strawberry fields !
plain capers-more folk / help - minty later press and more folk in the shape of 'rattlebone and ploughjack'-old english folk stuff devised and comped by ashley hutchings..
jumpleads-the stag must die-weird private press folk thing / cream-heavy cream / incredible string band and davy graham [ not from the bootie i hasten to add ] more is the pity !!
the tribe-bangladesh-meditation raga is cool..another odd one from the bahamas-ronnie and the ramblers-looks ace-i guess it will sound shit !!
got a track on it called ' tired pussy ' about a sleepy cat [maybe] / brand new 30th anniversary edition of 'never mind the bollocks' poster inside and one sided submission 7" intact and a nice 12" damned EP with most of my favourite tracks in one place..
various 7"s-PIL/damned/pistols and a few by the white stripes ..
more wee ones...new EP by graham day [ great stuff ] and from the bootie......traffic-paper sun / st.louis union-girl/respect and the dr.who theme...also 'chills and fever' by ronnie love - battered but cheap !!
i'm with antwhiplash on the getting up early thing [today at least] - my tardiness* cost me dearly this weekend, even though i am very happy with the haul i grabbed today
*missed a complete run of nucleus/ian carr stuff today and a load of nice brit jazz...how far can you take it though?
i mean i guess i could have stayed up all night and just got the bootie around four this morning !!
not pictured an og of 'exile on main street' - a few 'roy harpers' - some early 70's 'grateful dead' and 'mickey newburys' frisco mabel joy'..

Fairly run of the mill finds at my first boot of the year (bad weather innit)
Stanley Holloway - inclues a re-recording of his finest hour 'My Word You Do Look Queer' Garrick is on a couple of tracks ...RARE BRITISH JAZZ !!!!
Chappell - some nice (digital) electronics
Bruton - 'Electro / Contemporary' - including 'Dancehall Styles' (Uptown Rockers, Level Vibes, Unity Sounds , Kingston rock...)
Specials- Even though old style HMV price tag it's got the bottom of the 'C' in Specials filled in - thus later edition- SPOTTER !!.
David Rose - Stripper - Orig MGM - didn't realise how much 'How To Strip' on Island's Surprise subsiduary took from this album - inc nice version of Night Train
Lyman - Inc decent exotica stab at Moanin' - STEREO already !
Halliard - Nic Jones 1st appearance, from '67 - a bit 'Dubliners' but a nice solo version of Croppy Boy - lovely ...and a spare copy !
Faith Folk & Nativity - covered previously - a bit 'school choir' despite Don Rendell's presence
Keating - Decent version of Norwgian Wood - too short !
808 State 'Pacific' - Tommy Boy 6 mixes - looking at the import sticker (£7.49) I think I MAY'VE priced, shrinkwrapped and sold it when I worked @ HMV !
Gala ep's have 1940's / 50's glamour photographer Harrison Marks covers.
Blues and Soul I picked up in a SE London charity 1971 - 72 - 50p each

There's nothing like being just in the right place when a whole box of goodness is removed from the boot & plonked on a table, or so I've been toldWhy can't the boot organizers just not open until a sensible time, say 8am, surely they don't like having to set up at 6am or even earlier
Notwithstanding, it's so exciting this time of year with the first of the big boots starting up & lashings of winter-stored vinyl being released back into the wild
Will Studley ever open though?
