    Default Weekend Finds 5/7/2008

Nice little haul today - all free. A local school's music department just had a clear-out, I was alerted because I'm the son of such & such (who works for so & so...), plus I tell everyone I meet I'm interested in vinyl so these things do sometimes fall my way, which I'm always chuffed about

    what would've been thrown..

Mostly all classical (not sure what to photo since there's so much)- 4th collection this year of free classical; will have to start a thread at some point on what conductors to look out for (££?? I know nothing about the collecting side of the genre)
    > boxes of 78s, Brahms, Beethoven boxed sets galore - a few composers like Mahler, Debussy caught the eye, awful Andrew Lloyd "find me my Nancy" Webber, War Of The Worlds... only decent LPs I know I'll like or enjoy trying are Rhapsody in Blue, Carmina Burana... Symphony 4 by Charles Ives?

A few popular type records - I've photo'd the good stuff here (excluding the Elvis, Wham, Duran Duran, Gilbert & Sullivan ):

    And, oh yes...

The Radiophonic LP strangely in keeping with my last post on bin finds

    Also came away with...
2 copies of The Beatles For The Record book/mag type thing... lots of colourful photos (got the Abba one too)
8+ glockenspiels/marimbas/xylophones, the shelving for the vinyl, and since I discussed I'll be moving into a new unfurnished flat this weekend I've got a desk, wardrobe, and cabinet for the taking! Nice

    just felt like sharing that

UK, Decca. Sleeve is exactly the same both sides, quite tatty, record scuffed but still playable. I'm not even a Stones fan but I'm keeping this, it's my favourite track of theirs!

I think that must be a UK decca 45 in a US sleeve.

    Unless you've struck gold.

Probably, you'll have to tell me regarding the sleeve, I have no idea myself. This one doesn't have the London logo, as y'see - what does that mean?

New record shop opened in southend few weeks ago thought id pop in there few days ago glad i did he had a mint bun hunga & his combo Relax lp on diresa spanish og think was also released in belgium its an amazing lp sure this has been reissued knew of it but never heard it before now diplomatic fingers, music in transit, play thing for suzy....the whole lp is killer, sori sounds like im trying to sell it.and he said you can have that for nothing i was gonna chuck that pile out!!!
Then paid a visit to another rec shop in southend and paid 15 pounds for a mint big jullien & his all star riviera sound no1 just had look on popsike last one went for sumthin like 540 dollars must admit it sounds amazing, on the major minor label dont know whether this got issued in other countries highlight cuts are talk with massive intro break, wake the monster with a huge library sounding groove and edith with the fuzzness.
On top of this today i walked into local charity just as a guy dropped off bout 200 records all mint again why is everything mint this week even my polos r anyway got bout 50 out of that lot rest were easy listening but not in a good way. Heres some i got gonna go sleep in 5.

Bones galore red poydor funny was mentioned on here i like work song on this.
About 8 herbie mann lps inc push push, dicotheque, with strings, hold on im comin live, missisipi gambler.

    value isn't everything, though.

nice record - particularly like 'Raga', 'Sasa-Havi' and 'The Killers of W.1.' on here...

Must pop down to Southend sometime, sounds like the record shops don't have a clue!

Well, I can tell you one thing for sure, it's not the UK export sleeve - I have that and it's the usual generic scandanavian Decca sleeves with the appropriate band photo and text inserted. With that in mind, if the US version has a London logo on it then it's a pretty amazing find! I for one, can't understand why or why a school would have obtained a UK copy of the single in a US sleeve, but then no doubt we've all chanced on stranger things from stranger sources whist diggin' for vinyl gold...

Not strictly 'today's finds' but last week or so...
    LPs:
The Wallace Brothers, 'Soul Connection' (Sue). 10p from the usually fruitless Salvation Army.
Michael Hurley, 'Long Journey' (Rounder). From a classical music shop in Penzance.
Ame Son, 'Catalyse' (BYG). Sunday booter.
    45's:
Bee Bee Cee, 'You Gotta Know Girl' (Rel). Brilliant punk from generous friend.
Mighty Joe Young, 'Voo Doo Dust' (Webcor). Another kind friend.
Allan Randall, 'The Meditating Hindoo Man' (Electratone). Silly song by a George Formby impersonator.

Lil dig up Cliffdun way unearths. . .

Eater - Lock It Up / Jeepster - punk 12", sounds OK.

Don Kirscher Concept - Snips Hair - one of the better versions; some nice arrangements. Next to a copy of the superb Lasty edition - fucked, alas.

Also reserved a copy of Pete Winslow - Back In Brazil to collect on Monday. Expecting an ez-e latin parpfest out of this 'un.

All in all a pretty good week for cheap-as-chips finds - maybe this Bristol joint ain't so bad for the black stuff. . .

Went to a local flea market "Zeehelden festival" this morning. Only a few crates with nothing special/interesting in it, untill I'd hit the jackpot!!

The nice man only ask 0.50 cents each

    Find of the week

My finds today after visiting four outback flea's, two 78rpm: Babs Gonzales (Bop), Eve Young and the Homesteaders (Country probably - Rare to find!)

    EPs/45s
    RAYA RAVELL (Swedish 50s pop)
HERBIE MANN (Swedish recordings! Has loads of Swedish top musicians incl. Rune Öfwerman - Never had before)
WENCHE MYHRE/James Last (Swedish versions - Sound really German)

and some odd 70s Swedish pop, including CECILIA BRUCE - "Ta en Tablett" (Take a Pill) is a real incredibly strange 45 which I have searched many years to find! Dope pop!

PJ PROBY (Swe - no sleeve as it should have)
RUNT on US Ampex (Todd Rundgren)
DOROTHY MOORE on US Malaco (soul 1978)

At last I managed to find a copy of Lamplighter (on RSO of course) in this secondhand shop along with some bits by Houston Wells etc that arent very good.
In the same shop I had a browse through the 60s songsheets, hoping to find some Floyd etc, in between some crap I found a 60s 'glamour' mag called FEMALE MIMICS. Basically a jazz mag full of crap creepy transvestites!!!!I told the women shopkeep that she might want to put it somewhere else,as her grandkids were running around the place. She looked pleased because she had been looking for that mag everywhere as she wanted to put it on ebay!!!

Car boot was dismal so set off East for a fruitless search, only cheered up momentarily by a sweetie pick n mix with me lady.

The music teacher said they'd been stored untouched in the cupboard for at least 8 years, what before then he did not know, think of a number!
The sleeve was separate to the two Rolling Stones records I found. The sleeveless I Wanna Be Your Man still plays ok. Bit annoyed about the Paint It Black - lightly cleaned it, gave it a spin and it still sounds dusty! Thinking of buying the exact same copy of the record, minus the sleeve... but only if it's going cheap

    Recent keepers

Some polish ones (Alex Band, same as Kratgraver got). Love the Chuck Mangione Quartet - Alive.

Wallin with Okay Temiz, McCoy Tyner solo LP, Cornelis with Sabu Martinez, good swedish new wave (T-Shirts).

Some hiphop stuff, A group called Smith is a new favourite of mine, Magnificents are good too, never seen before.

Killer polish jazz, first side is hammond + drums, second side is with an orchestra. Lullaby from rosemary's baby, and some funkier stuff.

    Great sleeve!

These little ones were picked up at the Saturday street market and a few from a local chazzer on the Friday -

The Mixtures - Who Loves Ya? (Polydor) - great B side - three copies were at the stalls!
Bobby Bland - Keep On Loving Me (Duke) - original copy
Detroit Emeralds - Feel The Need (Atlantic)
Act One - Tom The Peeper (Mercury)
Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music (Epic)
James Polk - Power Struggle (Funk 45)
The Osmonds - Fever (MGM) - another B isde groove
T Connection - Disco Magic (Dash)
Tom Jones - Looking Out Of My Window (Decca) - another copy of mod classic
Johnny States and Son - Bug Eye (Funk 45)
Bobby Bland - Shape Up Or Ship Out (Duke)
Bill Black's Combo - Turn On Your Love Light (Hi)
Classics TV - Spooky (Imperial) - another version and is this the original of it?
Tom Jones - The Lonely One (Decca)
Doris Day - Blues In The Night (Philips)

25p each. A mixture of easy to get to less easy to get singles.
