I think i may have been a bit snap happy with my camera so apologies for those on slower connections, this page may take a while to load..
OK... here we go....
To start the day i had breakfast, Tesco's own frosted flakes. i would have had a nice fry up but the wife was having a lie in. For some reason the excitement of the £10.00 Charity Shop Challenge wasn't enough to get her out of bed..
Next i got all my stuff together, organisation is the key:
Record bag
MP3 Player, headphones and spare batteries
Keys
Pen (you never know, be prepared and all that)
Hat
and of course the £10.00, in change...
At 10.00 O'clock i set off into the wet Stockport streets. One of my mates had agreed to come along as company, photographer, security so i headed off to meet him. On the way i passed through the town hall probably more recognizable to TV viewers as the police station from Life On Mars:
The front looks nicer and wasn't used in the TV series:
Just round the corner i met up with my mate Ant who likes a good dig in the charities and often joins me on my little jaunts. Today he didn't buy anything partly so i could get the pick of the records and because hes skint...
From here we went to Shaw Heath ( i think that's what the area is called) to one of my favorite little charity shops, the "Otterspool Animal Haven".

I like this place as they usually have quite a big pile of records and there all 50p(although the lady behind the counter can never figure out the price of multiple buys and has to resort to a calculator so normally i just walk up and tell her how many LPs i have got and how much she needs to charge me). This would have probably been a good place to pick up an interesting object as its full of junk, but there were 4 boxes of vinyl to get through so i didn't have the time. From here i got the following:
16 Chart Hits vol 2: Mainly crap but does have a version of Sly & Family Stones "runnin away".
Piano Witchcraft - CY Coleman: Fairly inoffensive light pop/jazz piano but i really just bought it for the sleeve.
![]()
International Cocktail: I figured i couldn't go to far wrong with a "rediffusion" LP (although i have been stung in the past) and this is surprisingly, not too bad. Quite upbeat with plenty of drums and Hammond.
![]()
Hammond Pops 9 - Klaus Wunderlich: Was hoping for some Ill, Killer Breaks but sadly not this time. Once you have heard one "Hammond Pops" LP you have heard them all, still its one more to the collection.
![]()
Strings Afire - Celbanoff & His Orchestra: Not too bad, quite a lot of strings as you would imagine. Nice for what it is.
![]()
Plays Some Of The Oscars - Jerry Allen: Mr Allen is fast becoming one of my top Hammond/organ players as the last few LPs of his i have picked up have been fairly decent. This has a nice selection, some funky, some more laid back. Also there is a drum break on the first track but at over 130BPM its not likely ill ever find a use for it.
Hammond A Gogo 1 - James Last: Yet another Hammond record and again this is nice enough, has a few good moments but nothing that makes it brilliant.
![]()
Romeo & Juliet - Johnny Mathis: Includes a fairly decent crack at "Aquarius/Let The Sun shine In" and "Windmills OF Your Mind"
Hot Hits 18: Includes "Also Sparach Zarathustra" and "Brother Louie" but i prefer the Stereo Gold Award Versions. On the back of the sleeve the previous owner has added the artist names in biro, and for some reason credits "Brother Louie" to Nazareth..

My first copy (today)..
Form here we plodded up the road to the Debra charity shop
![]()
My mate had donated 2 big boxes of chuff to this shop a couple of weeks previously and as we suspected, it was all sat there waiting for us. Still, i managed to find a couple of things.
Golden Hour Of Favorite TV Themes - 101 Strings: Much as you would expect, all the usual suspects are rounded up, Kojak, Hawaii Five 0, Ironsides, Bonanza. Overall its not too bad, some nice cover versions.
![]()
Mamy Blue - Raymond Lefevre: I'm building up quite a collection of Ramond Lefevre stuff these days and this has to be one of the better ones. Not to much strings and a good loud rhythm section make this worth 50p
I still needed to spend 3 quid of my budget so we headed back down towards Edgely (home of Stockport County).

First Stop, the Beachwood charity shop where everything was 25p!
From here i found these:
That Latin Feeling - Bert Kaempfert: This is actually quite nice in parts and is certainly very Latin sounding. I made good use of this record but more about that later.
Tintwistle Brass Band: I bought this as it had a track called "Drummers Delight" in the hope of some breaks but i was wrong.
Love Me With All You Heart - Johnny Rodriguez: Absolutely Pants...country.
Second Copy.
On to the Salvation Army which also sold its LPs at 25p a go..!

A quick diggin shot.
For the grand total of £1.50 i got these:
Neil Reid: Some kid singing (fairly well to be fair).
So You Want To Go Back To Egypt - Keith Green: God bothering rock that did make me think of Jesus but usually followed by "this is sh*te". However it did come with a free booklet.
Sings 10 Roger & Heart Songs - Tony Bennett: Not that great, acoustic set.
With Love - Tony Bennett: Better than the last one, usual swing stuff
![]()
I am a song - Cleo Laine: Jazzy stuff from Cleo and her hubby and "hi-heel Sneekers" is pretty darn good.
Dance To The Music - Party 7: Bloody awful.
So with only 50p left we headed to out last stop Barnardos
Where i found the icing on the cake:
So with all £10.00 spent we headed back into Stockport centre and stopped off here:
Had a quick pint and took stock of what id just spent all my money on and had a quick go at a fairly poor sleeve face before heading home to give everything a quick spin.
I buy records to find loops and beats etc, and i can only really judge if I've had a good haul if i can make something with the bits and bobs I've found (although its also good just to get some good music of course). So once id given everything a quick needle drop i turned on my sampler and made this:
Its only rough, no proper sequencing or EQ-ing but it`ll do. For anyone who is interested i used only the records i bought today and used the Raymond Lefevre Lp for the bass drum, Hot hits for the high hat and Hammond Gold for the snare and roll. The loop is from the Bert Kaempfert LP..
So there it is. I didn't get an object or a boring book, i didn`t find any Studio 2 Stereo and i didn't go in disguise but all things considered i had a good day today (despite the weather) so thanks to Brass Monkey for coming up with the idea.![]()
