    Default Personal Record Snobbery

So we are all snobs to some level. I scorn CDs (except for copying stuff). But am very fussy about music from 1975 onwards. I generally don't buy groovy stuff from this year onwards.

I prefer an original to a reissue and although love comps, I don't feel the same pride as owning a good original record.

Now I recon I am probably quite low down on the snobbery meter. So come on fess up your snobberyness!

I don't like American pressings much, unless there isn't a proper (UK) pressing available.

    Oh- and 'Punk' destroyed music.

I was a punk and I still think that it was that movement the one that brought fun and old r'n'r back... as you can imagine prog music is the antichrist for me... Saying that, I don't listen to punk anymore (apart from early german punk)...

I don't have a clue about new music, too busy listening to so much old stuff I am discovering...

    I don't like lps or 12" much, prefer 7"s...

    Next one, please.

I like all sorts of music, but revere jazz over all other genres because I know that most people hate it, and 'getting it' makes me look clever, cool and sooo much better than everybody else...& if that makes me a snob, then so be it.

    I'm pretty much like you.

Althoguh I do buy hip hop which as a genre is after 75, but musically I would class at as pre 75 because of the samples.

I'm not too bothered weather its a U.K. or U.S. pressing either, ive never really been into that whole U.K. thing that much.

Fine for mix tapes but buying one in preference to vinyl or a CD - can't understand that

I am a music snob............................................I don't dig reissues, i only buy original vinyl, i don't care what year or genre it's from it just has to be very good (to me) I tend to avoid questions from non collectors about what kind of music i like because i can't explain well enough - i upset a few people at work recently by proclaiming my general dislike for Radiohead and that sort of 'in the club, everyone must like this' music - They thought i was being a wanker. I thought they were being wankers

Shhh! You're gonna get me in a whole world of GK monkey trouble...

My pressings snobbery is that I always prefer the original country release i.e. US pressings for US bands, with the logical exceptions (Hendrix, Scott Walker etc).

I am completely ignorant to modern music, and I'm definitely in the 'prog killed music' camp. In fact, for me it started going downhill in the late '60s when things got a bit too pretentious for my tastes (e.g. lots of Pebbles type psych, heavy rock, progressive). I'm a simple man with simple needs. Two and a half minute '50s/'60s R'n'B and R'n'R songs are where it's at for me.

I tend to collect '45s over LPs too, but that's a preference rather than a snobbery.
SEALED, this has a sticker on the front reading "COLOUR VINYL" so it's probably not black vinyl, even though black is a colour.

Agree with most of what's been posted so far. I used to buy reissues fairly frequently but not anymore, unless it's of something that's really hard to track down in original form and when you do it's very pricey. The age of the internet has brought reasonably priced originals within everyone's grasp now.

Modern music is all shit to me, mostly because of the lack of dynamics in the music. Digital isn't a patch on analog and overproduction ruins most things. It's great to read about your favourite tracks (especially b-sides) that took about ten minutes to write and five minutes to record. I love that immediacy that was such a big part of the industry way back when.

Similar to Towny, I upset a few people the other night when I suggested that Elbow were the Coldplay it's alright to like!!

I dont know why it is but I do desire the obscure stuff(music and films). When a work mate states about a pop song, 'well a lot of people liked it' I usually say its no mark of quality as the majority know nothing, in a jokey-but-kinda-meaning-it way.

Also I have turned into a bit of an Original copy snob.Used buy reissues all the time.Dont bother now, must be middle age or something.

I like my pressings to originate from the country that the artist is from. I'm never happy with European pressings for UK or US artists.

Like others I never really feel like I own the LP if it's only a reissue....I certainly don't listen to it as much as I would if it was an OG.

I don't want to hear psych from the 80's or 90's. I also don't want to hear straight jazz or reggae from any decade....sorry I just don't get it and never will.

Whereas I would probably remark to you that it is mark of quality since it has a majority preference.

    African records with synths.

There's a bit of a grey area around the time of Franco's Nalingaka Yo Yo Te but usually the first thing I do is check the back of the sleeve and if there's synth on it, back it goes.

I used to think that anything from 1968 onwards (the year things got really pretentious and the acid turned everything sour) was crap. Mono productions over stereo, UK over US pressings, wary of anything recorded on more than 8 tracks, analog over digital, if you can't say what you want to say in 3 minutes then don't bother, Beatles over-rated etc.

I've always preferred 45s, especially from small bands who only released a few singles, as they tend to have more enthusiasm and different motives to established bands. They also have a lot more of a "pop" sensibilty, but most importantly, are easier to play in poor light than LPs where you've got to find the right bloody track...

My tastes have considerably expanded since, although my collection is still predominately stuff before '68. I still have a problem with the '80s, as I hate the bass sound, and growing up in the middle of that decade was what threw me back to the 60s to find something I liked in the first place.

Facsimiles of mega rare LPs I can kinda understand, but not reasonably common stuff like The Byrds. And why the hell someone would want to buy a dodgy pressing of a "freakbeat" 45 without a centre is beyond me...

Compared to you lot I'm not a snob at all - I buy cds and reissues, and I like a lot of modern electronic music...

I don't really like downloading or mp3s though, unless its unavailable elsewhere. I do like to own a hard copy with album art, even if it is a cd. I try to support the industry in my own little way...

All of my records are better than yours - not only are they rarer, and iller, but they have more musical merit and come in pristine condition with unmarked sleeves that were signed by the artists at the moment of release. I enter the number of times I play them on my fantastically expensive stereo into a database and, once they reach three plays, I smash them with a gold hammer and have them taken away by a private waste disposal contractor because I can't bear to look at them anymore...

...& if that makes me a snob, then so be it.

Don't do that again. There, will that do? I have a feeling you'll slide down the slippery slope towards OG nerddom sooner or later, Suze. (And, as you well know, the word is 'pednat').

Me, I'm with Towny all the way...

...Apart from a general dislike for Radiohead. I don't have a problem with good pop music from any era (all this modern is crap but old is good is pretty odd to me). But popularity doesn't equate with quality, either. And all this, 'nothing after '66', 'only jazz' talk also strikes me as a little weird on a board about embracing good records, no matter the source?

Speed Lounge, that's the only type of music worth bothering about.
Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

My old snobbery about the date of recording meant I missed out on a lot of good stuff.
