    Default Weekend finds 20 / 21 September

These found their way to my letter box

    Maynard Ferguson - Freaky LP
This is the stereo UK version of his 1968 album, Ridin' High. Straightforward jazz rock that doesn't blow me away or put me to sleep.

Oldham Tinkers - Best O' T' Bunch LP
1974 on Topic. Well delivered Lancashire songs.

Tundra - A Kentish Garland LP
Got this B.I.N. tip from Joe M'Geek. Thanks again Joe! Excellent private press folk from 1978. Great version of Hopping Down In Kent. £5, usually goes for £30+

Jean Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley - Kaleidoscope Vibrations LP
Their second LP which sees them use the moog modular synth to within an inch of its life and play contemporary hits. Highlights are Baroque Hoedown and Mas Que Nada.

June Tabor - Ashes And Diamonds LP
Her second release and while the voice is great some of the synths left people cold. Not me, Lisbon rules.

Harry Roche Constellation - Casino Royale and Other Hip Sounds LP
Hmmm. Title track is good, the rest is too floaty.

some guff from the past week or so - some trades, some real world buys:

MOUNTAIN MOVING DAY - dead fun dyke-y folk funk with songs about abortions and madlib samples, yo.
WENDY AND BONNE - "genesis" - chuffed to grab this in plastic wax for what seemed to me to be a reasonable price (£27 - is that good?)... lovely, lovely, lovely album -only complaint is its very short!
MAN - "be good to yourself at least once a day" - daft stoner hippie jamz - now i only need the LP with the silly painting odf the man on the beach, is that one any good?
MAGMA - traded my copy off a while back so got this one (only the second disc, but still a fun listen) maybe my favourite Magma LP
DAVID CROSBY - beautiful hippie jam record. crunchy grooves, man.
PUTNEY SWOPE ost - never been released before, apparently. only 500 pressed so thought i should nab one. really fun - some good grooves and funny dialouge snippets.

INSPIRATION - North Sheilds private pressed by a group of ugly teenagers. some funky moments and an awesome cover of the osmonds "one way ticket to anywhere" complete with break.
--- havent reallyu listend to the rest.... bottom right is cliff richard reading the bible - -dont know why i bought it!!
    some 7's:
KEVIN AYERS - "baby come home" (had no idea he's bought out a new single. folky - b-side is nice)
SPRINGWATER - "i will return" (funny instrumentals with big drums and guitar sounds)
LABI SIFFRE - "crying laughing loving lying" (pleasant enough)

That seems like an exceptional price compared to what I've seen some go for on ebay - great find - looks in great condition, too.

I love this LP - there's also a 10" available of the soundtrack to another Downey Jr film called 'Pound'. Again, very good fun, although the sound's not the best.

Just one today- a field recording of padstow may day on 45- sentinel records from 1972.

Bumped into an old uni friend and chatted just long enough to see local digging nemesis 'outdoor wear' (known after his place of employ) get a copy of Scott 3...coulda been worse, I suppose, but it still rankles

Seeing other people buy things I want never happens at any other boot fair I go to, but this- the only walking distance one from my house, is positively overflowing with such occurrences
"Not only that but the WHOLE COVER is UNCREASED with only 2 or 3 TINY creaselines near the opening edge about half way down!!!! In the same place (about half way down the opening edge), there is an absolutely TINY and PERFECTLY repaired split" (xxxrecords)

Just a quick one from me. Thought i'd shove some finds up as I'm on here so infrequently. ebay/shop/chazza mxtyure

Quite liking the Gabor Szabo. Another cover of Paint it Black to add to the collection!
Organisation is Ralph and Florian of kraftwerk fame. Similar to early kraftwerk, unsurprisingly...

Some 45s i'm quite pleased with snuck into my sweaty hands lately.
LES PROBLEMS - DODECAPHONE is the vogue.
HARLEY QUINN - NEW ORLEANS/IN A MOMENT OF MADNESS. meh. new orleans is ok
REDBONE - WITCH QUEEN OF NEW ORLEANS. i do have a soft spot for this tune
    MAGAZINE - GIVE ME EVERYTHING
MARC ARYAN - LE LETTRE/LIBERTE liberte is a mental french sort of cover of 'superstition' that segues into a sort of cover of 'venus'. brilliant.
    LIO - LES BANANA SPLIT
MARC ARYAN - LES MELONS/AGNES this guy looks the coolest. signed by the man himself.
    J J LIGHT - HEYA
DIMITRI - POOR SOUL/MUSCLE HANDS i quite like the b side. nice ever so slightly out of place synths.

Also found an interesting 45 in a loughborough charity shop:
the merry piper/ velvet waters by a band called 'The Megatrons'. Seemed like an odd name for a band who were releasing stuff in the late 50s. Anyone know anything about them?

Woke up with a hangover at around 10.30, which is curious given that I was on driving duty last night and all I drank was diet coke and coffee. More water I reckon.

I found out that today was another of my (very infrequent) local boots and, given that I did alright last time, I ambled down and arrived at around 11.30 (kicked off at 8 so not really expecting much).

Turned out to have a few decent bits (including a nice enamelled 1940s breadbin for the kitchen)

2 (?) copies of the Miracles Greatest Hits. I appreciate its a little bit scorched earth to take both but its not like people had not had the chance before me
Ubiquitous (but to me elusive) posthumous Jimi comp
Just listening to Bloomsbury People now. Its psych tinged pop/rock. Little bit baroque in places. Probably a bit too inoffensive to ge great but good in parts

I'm assuiming the Stylistics is their first (from 1971). Holding out high hopes that this will have a bit more grit than their bland mid-70s efforts
Nice to pick up the Ralph McTell and CSNY on plum atlantic (sleeve is a bit battered though). Also another Cosmo's Factory for the collection

I'm a sucker for stuff like the Hi-Los
Undertones is a Spanish copy with a nice Spanish sticker on the front, which rendered it sufficiently interesting to justify getting a further copy
Guy who sold me the Planxty said it was great folk, but I know nothing about them. Ditto the Cashman and West.

Finally, I was leafing through a pile of chuff when a thin paper sleeve caught my eye. In my haste, I assumed it was a 70s 12" so carried on leafing through. Having found nothing of interest I went back to it. Turns out it was this...

Record looks mint. Sleeve isn't bad either save for a little bit of creasing around the disc. I even like the dedication written on the front
...if in doubt consult your dealer.

few from the past few weeks for me

thanks to Steve and Wayne for the trades

i managed to go in every charity shop i passed while in cornwall and only managed to find the Holman Climax Lp, which i only bought because of the cover picand it said Climax on the sleeve .

the martin carthy is excelltn and i managed to catch him and Dave Swarbrick live in St Ives last week. and they played Byker Hill. Support was from the Clive Palmer Band.

    The Fairport lp is excellent,

the Red Hash lp is Excellent, id only heard a few tracks from it beofre but not listened propperly,

the Silly Wizard lp is from the early 80's but doesnt sound like it, it sounds prety good, though i have just listened to it all and theres a fair few jiggy nonny nonny songs on it! but a few nice tracks.

the IF 2 lp is up for trade, i just listened to it and its not my type of thing.

i also just managed to delete my original text! because i pressed edit instead of quote, i think ive forgotten how to use a computer

Yeah i neglected to mention it was a reissue

It's a good listen. i just left it on while making some coffee downstairs, forgot about it, and now it has a nice scratched circle over the label where the needle made it's own groove :-(
Probably wouldn't be too chuffed it if was an og!

Steady fella, you'll be starting a thread praising the genius of Stock, Aitken and Waterman before the year is out.

A few bits from the car boot sales over the last few weeks..

    Hendrix - Experienced (US press)
Mutzie - Light of your shadow (Sussex) - heavy rock with a bit of pysch in there somewhere. Produced by Theodore & Coffey...but unlike anything else on Sussex
Joyce Bond - Soul of change (Windmill)
Perry & Kingsley (as mentioned elsewhere this week)

One in a million - Chelsea School Music Group. Dunno why I buy these School LPs because they are normally shite. This is no exception.
Booby/Billy/Brasil by Bobby Hackett & Billy Butterfield. Quite good US bossa album with Luis Henrique.
Carlos Malcolm - Bustin outta the Ghetto. Interesting funk album from Fatty Bum Bum man.
The Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music by Beaver & Krause. UK issue from Transatlantic Records with nice booklet in gatefold sleeve. Consists of mainly bleeps and squawks. Can't really imagine sitting down to listen to this too often.

Funny thing is I didn't look at it and think 'shit, this is as rare as they come'. It wasn't logged in the memory banks in the same way as some other uber rarities. But I knew I recognised the band and album title and, given that its a private press, that left a lingering suspicion.

As for the time, its more of a community boot so is totally untouched by the diggers

I'm looking at the dedication on the front, its signed off "from Spriggies" and is in the same handwriting as the "Mandy Morton" in the top right corner. I'm assuming that its probably from her??

Just got a bunch of 28 US singles through the post- got them as a lot, which including postage worked out about 30p each

Highlights include Dance Dance by The Chartbusters, Making up and Breaking up by The Buckinghams, Come Down to my Boat by Every Mothers Son, Trouble with a Woman by Kip and Ken.

    Default Punk's not dead.....

...it's merely residing in the charity shops and booters!

Can't hold a candle to the other finds this week - blimey - but I was pleased to chance upon a nice wee stash of punk stuff - at both the boot and a local charity. All real world finds this week.

    Instant Devo 45 starter kit

Monochrome set 45s - reminds me of when I went to see them back in the day but arrived so 'refreshed' that I fell asleep and heard not one note

Punk / new wave including two of the best IMHO - Wire 'Pink Flag' and the Adverts "Crossing the Red Sea with...' - really glad to have them back on the shelves.

Other random finds - the Arbeia is quite nice later brit jazz, Mandingo is a spare - pm me if in need, 'Stampede' is faux-authentic surf made in the last 20 years I believe - good stuff though, Minitures is great fun - based on the Duchamp piece were he made wee versions of his works (name escapes me at the moment) this is a collection of very short pieces comissioned specially for the LP from a very wide variety of sources e.g. Steve Miller, Quinten Crisp and, my fave at the moment, Andy Partridge - I feel a few 'interludes' on my xmas CD coming on. The Sinatra concept LP - not listened yet but glad to turn this up for a quid as I've always been interested to hear what it's like. Contraband is kind of celtic folk rock on Transatlantic and isn't really my cup of tea - anyone interested in this? Eric?

I still need to pick up that Frank Sinatra LP. A dealer had it last year for £10 but I'm sure I left it due to the sleeve condition rather than me not wanting to pay £10....can't quite remember.

That Planxty LP is their debut. Dates from 1973. Pretty revelatory. The West Coast Of Clare is amazing. They supported (and some say eclipsed) Donovan when he toured Ireland that year.

Thanks for the offer mate....don't worry about it. I've still got 70 Xmas 2007 CD's to get through so I've got enough CD listening for the moment

I'll pick up the LP at some point...hopefully for more like a fiver.

Default A mixed bag of finds and post

    Bits through the Post .

Journey to the Moon Victor Jay / Sound of Genesis Buddah 1969
Mentioned on the board recently as well as a former digging partner recommending it too as a nice exploito psych/ square psych LP. Have to say I really like it . The Vocal snippets are great and the Journey to the moon wouldn't be out of place on a xian mix that are currently being posted. Whilst the sitar track is also a peach

Albert King I Wanna Get Funky Stax 1974
After finding a Rufus Thomas in the Wild a few weeks ago I am re evaluating my stand on latter Stax releases. This made up the postage for the Journey to the moon and was a nice price as a BIN. Flat Tire is the tune for me on this one .

    From my trawl through Aberystwyth

EVIL DEAD 2 OST Joseph Lo Duca TER 1987
Loved the film . love the album cover . No I swallow your soul vocal snippets though

Luis Gasca For Those who Chant Blue thumb 1971
Not in the Graetest shape . But the cover sold it to me . Graet session men too. Santana , Coke, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke. A great lattin fusion jazz album. On repeat play as we speak.

Black Eyed Peas Jams and Joints 12"
First release from the once great post daisy age hip hop band. A guilty pleasure from my Uni days.

    David Holmes
. Lets Get Killed/ My mate Paul LP +12"
An album I have seen in second hand shops for over £20 I thought the £5 For both LP and 12" was a nicer punt .
Graet Major Force West Mix too on the 12"

    Thats my lot
    Rock on Penderyn

No decent Flea markets this week, so these are mainly from shops.

Hein Huysmans Kwintet-septet Dutch Belgian Jazz with a couple of funky tracks.
Nedley Elstak et al-The Machine Dutch free jazz on ESP. Inside this record were a couple of interesting ESP ephemera shown here.
Group Ohm-Skokian Dutch Fusion on obscure label. Sounds like an ECM release.
Larry Willis-Inner crisis Title track is the best tune here.
V.A. New thing BYG label sampler. great line up of tracks.
Walter Bishop jr-Coral keys Good piano jazz on Black Jazz label.
Novos Baianos-Gaia na estrada e perigas ver This brazilian Hippie Jazz Psych Fusion Samba record had me checking if my turntable wasn't running too fast about 4 times Unbelievable musicianship, music not quite sure of.
Priscilla Paris-Priscilla loves Billy Billie Holiday covers, and well done!
Janis Ian-For all the seasons of your mind Second album by teenage Ian, one of her best IMO, sounds like she listened to Laura Nyro at the time.
    Steel Pulse-Sound system 12"
Quarteto Em Cy-4/4 Actually a french reissue of their En Cey Major album, Nice record.
    Bob Marley-Buffalo soldier 12"

    More reggae:

Armagideon time by Willie Williams One of my favorite riddims. Chuffed to find this on 12"

Lincoln thompson-Natural wild 12" The instrumental dub is actually the best track on this.

    Also found this:

UK original in great condition! low numbered booklet as well.
