    Default The XYY Man

I've recently been watching this brilliant 1970s Granada TV crime-thriller series with Stephen 'Howard's Way' Yardley as cat burglar 'Spider' Scott.

It's got one of the best title sequences ever, accompanied by a seriously funky theme tune. In fact, there are two themes. The first series, from 1976, uses a sig. tune that sounds like it was recorded for CTI (it even sounds like Grover Washington on sax); the second series, from 1977, has a theme credited to Mike Moran.

However, I can't believe either sig. tune was specially composed for the series, as all the incidental music is from various library music catalogues. Moran's theme sounds like it was from a Themes International session (it's definitely Barry Morgan on drums).

Does anyone know which LPs these pieces come from?

In any case, it's a superb series; definitely one for anybody with even a passing interest in 1970s Britain. They don't make 'em like that any more.
A leaping rocker with a strong mood, a moderate beat and a safari feel.

    Network have released it.

I enjoyed the series - very gritty and Yardley vs Bulman is great.

Currently working my way through the follow-up/spin-off Strangers. Just finished the second series. Credible infiltration tales.

The one after that, Bulman, is due in the new year.

I was thinking the same thing - possibly Mike Moran or Alan Tew for the first theme tune? I'm guessing you've checked the Themes International section at www.playkpm.com ?

The follow-up series, Strangers, is also excellent by the way!

It was about a bloke with an extra Y chromosome that made him dead violent, wasn't it?
I remember my mum not allowing me to stay up and watch it after I'd read about the dead violent bit in the Radio Times.
I heard that Jamie Lee Curtis has an extra Y chromosome too, making her the XXY Woman, as well as a peer of the realm thanks to marrying Lord Whosit out of SpinalTap.

Yes, I'm hoping that'll come out on DVD at some point - superb theme tune by Robert 'Bob Sharples' Earley. I like the rasping trumpets!
