    Default Weekend Finds 30/11/2008

Despite suffering from the after effects of man flu and Lemsipped up to the max I ventured out to a local record fair today. Almost every dealer had loads of cheap boxes or half price or more sales. Found the following:

    [/img]

Brother Jack McDuff - Down Home Style - Excellent funky jazz on Blue Note
The Blackbirds - No Destination - German beat combo that has some funky hammond moments
Mike Carr - hammond Under Pressure - VV Classic signed by Mr Carr! - Spare
Paul Horn - Jazz Suite - Excellent religo jazz - Spare
Ray Davis - Flashpoint - VV Classic, some unusual covers on this one - Spare
Salvation Soundtrack - Mr Nick Cope first introduced me to this LP many moons ago at an early Brillo. Since then I've picked up every cheap copy I see. One great breakbeat track. Spare

    [/img]

Don Tracy - A Night wih the Voodoo Family - On recently discovered this Studio 2 LP, great afro cuban jazz.
Hannibal - ST - Don't know anything about this UK prog outfit. Had one listen and it is great, very downbeat and pretty funky / jazzy.
Just Ice - The Desolate One - Classic Hip Hop
Joachim Kuhn - Bold Music -MPS jazz, not listened to this yet, hope it's not too free!
Electro 11 - Filling in the gaps!

    [/img]

Rhythm Makers - Soul on your Side - Very chuffed to find 3 sealed original copie of this hard to find funky soul jazz lp!
The Electric Indian - Keem o Sabe - Funky exploito LP.
Maynard Feguson - 2 - Funky Big Band Jazz
" " - Alive and Well in London - More funky big band jazz - Spare

Also picked up the following 45's:

    Brass Ring - Spinning Wheel
The Poets - She Blew a Good Thing
    Willie Bobo - Juicy
African Music Machine - Camel Time - Spare
The South Side Movement - I've Been watching You
Pittons Party - Friday Night (Pay day)

Nice! Looks better than the last Novotel one! Sorry I didn't go but I didn't get up till midday after three hours sleep on Friday night and then Saturday's fair and two gigs Saturday night.... so decided to miss it.

Picked up a great pile of cheap 45s at the Saturday fair though....

    reggae!

Keith Hudson on Smash, Pat Kelley on Gas, Alton Ellis 'Girl I've got a date', Lloyd Charmers '303', Bobby Thompson on Jolly, Junior Smith on Sioux, Derrick Morgan 'Moon hop', Jimmy Cliff, Rupie Dewards 'Soulful Stew', Pat Kelley Aussie copy on W&G, Byron Lee on Starlite, Toots on Trojan plus a couple more - Upsetters 'Clint Eastwood' and a version of 'Jungle Fever' on Treasure Isle.

soul! including some unusual Aussie releases.

and the battery's just died in my camera...

also picked up a handful of late 60s/early 70s US bits by Bob Seger (great version of 'If I were a carpenter'), The Poor, The Moods, T.J. Stone, The Knowbody Else, Will Hammond and the World's Best Apple Pie; some U.S. Tamla hits, a Dusty 'Spooky', The Carpenters 'Goofus', which I didn't realise was on a 45, a Polish rock'n'roll EP by the Red and Black Six which is interesting to say the least, and a few other 50p random bits, including a 'See Emily play' and a Greek 'Arnold Layne'.

    Top day out all round!

Looks like my local record fair here was totally shit compared to yours, but at least, inspired by top chaps sarge and mr ffolly I got the Paul Brett Sage and Twinn Connexion albums for decent prices and the good old Move comp on mfp.

Very jealous about the floyd singles... not sure I've seen them even for real money! What's the soul stuff?

Just back from Novotel - loungecore inferno!

Wish I had a spare £85 to afford the tasty looking Jap-psych grail I found though. Not cheap, but a lot of interesting stock.

Was a lot better than I'd been led to believe - loads of nice MOR to funky jazz - cheap - and a pretty good selecion of slightly knackered "3 for a tenner" psych / rock stuff. Yaya and I both did ok. Looking forward to the Folk House on the 13th now.

Still quite chuffed with a few of the cheap 45s I found at yesterday's fair - 3 really good 'uns from the 25p box at the door, inc. a nice funk double-sider! The shagged yet extremely playable "Lord Sutch & His Heavy Friends" is also excellent - a real surprise!

Seeing this just reminded me that DJ Friendly had a sealed copy for 6 euro at Utrecht and had weight etc not being a concern I would have picked it up as a spare, along with a mint David McCallum It's Happening Now LP with the alt. Rolls Royce artwork.

    just three LPs this weekend

    Richie Havens - Portfolio.
    From 1973, solid.

Various - Fill Your Head With Rock.
Double LP sampler - Santana, Trees, Laura Nyro, Argent. Nice and diverse.

Brendan Balfe - Balfe Bothered And Bewildered.
1974 comedy album; the track Deteriorata should be familiar to some of you as the closer on ETK's Xmas 07 mix.

Got to two booters today- first time in a while; busy despite the sub-zero temps, but little enough vinyl:
this lot from the first one:

The one on the top right is All Good Clean Fun - a UA comp from '72 with 'Awkwind, Man, Help Yourself, Amon Duul and so on - thing is, i hate label comps. The Feliciano is Just Wanna Rock n' Roll and, well, so he does....

Second one produced this lot (got there late and one woman selling 'old, rare records' for a tenner each (!) told me she'd had 'loads' earlier....
Anyway these were from the one guy, and averaged about 7 each - he threw in the lee Morgan because the cover is trashed, but it plays great

The Raiders record is fab - the Greco was actually from someone else; it's called La Femme and the notes proclaim "Woman - like the eye of a fly she has a 1001 facets - on this record you really have "Woman" - the one who whispers 'undress me' ..." and so on.....

This bunch form earlier in the week:

The Music of Africa is recorded by Hugh Tracey among the mineworkers of the Witswatersrand - proto Kwela ?

The Jimmy Rushing is great - Coleman Hawkins and Buck Clayton among the sidemen as he does songs by Bessie, Trixie, Mamie and Clara Smith

The Halliard is Saga exploito- irish ballad stuff featuring a young Nic(k) Jones, who AFAIK had no Irish at all in him, but it doesn't stop him joining in on IRA recruitment ballads like the Merry Ploughboy. The sleevenotes note that 'The Irish people have made many contributions to the cultural heritage of the British Isles but none greater than their composing and singing of Irish folk songs" go us!

    This lot from earlier again:

Through a Looking Glass features arrangements of Satie by the Camarata Chamber Group on Deram - I seem to be collecting versions of Trois Gymnopedies at the min - picked up Yusef Lateef Psychicemotus recently with his versh on it.

No seeds or berries for me this week (but the tubs full of sloe vodka / gin / brandy are coming along nicely).

Just four record type things were picked up (am focused on buying DVDs for Christmas presents at the mo).

    3 from Anarchy:

    - A Marcos Valle reissue that's not really hit me like I hoped it would and will almost certainly find its way onto a trades/freebies pile in days to come.

    - The Bells 'Stay Awhile', Canadian (?) pop/rock/country effort that sounds pretty decent. Need to give it another spin though (time has been tight this weekend)

    - Lesley Duncan LP with the classic 'Love Song' and backed up by the cream of UK session musicians

And one from Rob's Records, retrieved from his filing system (i.e. shoved under a shelf on top of some carrier bags )

    - Michael Garrick 'October Woman'. Rob's not daft and knew this was worth ££s so I had to part with proper(ish) money for this, but I've asked one of the board's sages and been assured that I didn't do too badly. To be honest, I'm finding it a little bit too........structured? Will persevere, but it doesn't FEEL like a keeper.

Don't know if I've already recommended it, but I can't stop playing Deerhoof's 'Offend Maggie' album. Killer avant indie noise grooves.

And the renters lost - hope Hugh's smiling through the lumbago!!

really good record IMO - bought it years ago, forgot about it, dug it out recently and was won over.

His LPs don't usually do a lot for me, but this LP has a cool vulturesque instrumental on it.

madrid's flea provided these at a euro each :

Meco - encounters of every kind. late 70s disco, pleasant. haven't really spun it much yet
Victor Bach - Music. on venezuelan Ariston label. My find of the year I reckon. some laid back lounge with lots of Arp (I think) on Niagra falls, and Victor's bag, a stunning version of Take 5 (again heavy on the arp), and even KC and the sunshine band's 'shake your booty' gets a bluennote style hammond workover! Album only let down by lame-sounding bits of john miles' 'music' between tracks and a sleazy, saxy version of could it be magic.... but to be fair it turns into a most excellent twiddly synth extravaganza!
VA - Exitos para bailar on ariola. comp with cod reggae 'moon river' by eddie lee mattison, spanish 60s beat in the form of la escoba by los sirex, a pretty good version of fresa salvaje by sanyago ( a camilo sexto classic). a vaguely pscyh track called people (summer song) by armada and there was another track with a good break , i think it 's by Guilly bright.

One thing popped up for cheap this weekend and it made me very happy:

The 20th Century Steel Band - Yellowbird is Dead

    Funky soul steelband from 1976,

Also finally got around to the second part of the upgrade I started 3-4 years ago when I sold my Can Limited Edition album. Yes, finally bought Unlimited Edition with an extra LP worth of for the most part excellent krautrock.

From the record fair at Flint on saturday -

Wizards From Kansas 'S/T' (Mercury) W/L promo of west coast classic, the dealer wasn't sure if it was a boot or not, the copy that i bought years back had a different label and that was definitely a boot, wasn't pricey but i hope it's legit!

Jonathan Edwards 'S/T' (Atlantic) early 70's singer-songwriter fare with some nice guitar & pedal steel, seems this guy was previously in a band called Sugar Creek with Joe Dolce of Shaddup Your Face fame!

Ian Matthews 'S/T' (Vertigo) first solo album by ex Fairport guy, stellar backing from Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Andy Roberts. Enjoying his version of Reno Nevada

Bob Seger System 'Mongrel' (Capitol) need to pick up more of his early stuff, much better than his Silver Bullet output

Savoy Brown 'Street Corner Talking' (Decca) From '72, includes a enjoyable stab at Can't Get Next To You

Bobby Whitlock 'S/T' (Atlantic) solo album from Derek & The Dominos / Delaney & Bonnie guy, not yet played this one yet

Love & Respect 'Deep & Heartfelt' (Glitterhouse)
    V/A 'Motor City Madness' (Glitterhouse)
V/A 'This House Is Not A Motel' (Glitterhouse) back to the era of grunge for these three, Mudhoney's Steve Turner guests on the first one, the usual suspects on the comps (Mudhoney, Green River, Fluid...) worth a listen for nostalgia's sake

V/A 'Buddah In Mind' (Buddah) Lemon Pipers/Beefheart/Impressions & more

Kostas Tournas 'Astroneira' (Polydor) the guy on the cover looks like a greek version of Peter Gabriel! sadly the musical output doesn't live up to the sleeve. A bit of googling revealed that from this, his 2nd lp onwards he took the pop/rock route whilst the first one incorporated folk/psych/progressive jazz. Still active today as well.

Hawkwind 'S/T' (Sunset) cheap re-issue of a classic
