Default Finds 31st Aug to 4th Sept

Well it's Wednesday already and nobody has started a fresh thread for the week so I'm taking the plunge and starting one myself and I'm setting the bar very low.

Following my lack of finds in Yorkshire (see holiday thread) I went a bit mad and picked up 15 records yesterday on my first dig after returning home. The first 2 pics are from one charity shop and the other 2 pics from a bric-a-brac shop with a few £1 bins that I've haven't checked in a long time. No major finds but spent less than £8 so pretty happy.

UB40 - Signing Off (Graduate Records). Debut album and includes the bonus 12".
The Settlers - The World Of The Settlers (Decca). Not played yet and get the feeling it won't be any good. Anyone want to speak up for The Settlers?
International Series - Stereo Sound Stage (Philips). Got covers of Hawaii 5-0 and Shaft theme amongst a real mixed bag of tracks.

Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years (CBS). Not played yet but like the track 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.
Tomita - The Bermuda Triangle (RCA Red Seal).
Marvin Gaye - How Sweet It Is (MFP). Comp of tracks from 64-69. Not played yet.
Martha Reeves - Dancing In The Street (MFP). Nice comp of tracks from 63-67.

Eric Gale - Ginseng Woman (CBS). Bit too easy jazz funk.
Andy Mackay - Resolving Contradictions (EMI). 2nd solo release from the Roxy Music saxophonist. Supposed to be a concept album with references to Chinese culture and featuring some of his Roxy bandmates. Unplayed and not expecting much.
Stealers Wheel - S/T (A&M). Bought for Stuck In The Middle With You. Played it a few times now and quite like this one.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Trilogy (Island). Not played yet.

The Mel Lewis Orchestra - 20 Years at The Village Vanguard (Atlantic). Needle dropped this one and it sounds too light for me.
Woody Herman - Woody's Big Band Goodies (Wing). Has a Thelonius Monk cover so thought it was worth a go but again a needle drop doesn't excite me.
Repercussions - Earth And Heaven (WB Records). Mid 90s acid jazz album. Sounds a bit dated now but quite a good album all the same.
George Melly - It's George (WB Records). Can't say Mr Melly shakes my world but prepared to give this one a chance. Bought for the cover though which I love.

Excellent tune. Rest of the album a disappointment.

    No. It's rubbish.

I bought it to see what they would do with 'Do I Still Figure in your life' and wasn't impressed.

The Settlers have done some great VV type fare, don't tell me you don't like 'Lightning Tree' ? !

    Here's a parable...

Many, many moons ago, back before I forgot my login details so was posting as Jim Cassius, there was this thread. Its one of my all time favourite threads, although it certainly needs updating with more recent treasures that people have found. It gave me a huge number of suggestions, as well as that warm, fuzzy feeling that other people were out there, buying crap records in the hope of finding some magic. I can't quite believe that's getting on for five years ago but that's another story...

One of the things that stuck with me from that thread was the "good" Liberace LP. Ever since, I've been checking every single Liberace LP I see and don't recognise, to see whether I've stumbled across that one. God knows how many hundreds, possibly thousands, of times I've scoured his albums in vain. Its a near constant irritant.

It was only in the last few weeks - spurred on by someone posting a picture in the finds thread - that I realised it would be infinitely easier to commit the sleeve to memory. I'm not very bright like that.

Anyway, I committed it to memory.

Yesterday, I drove in circles for over an hour, trying to find a run of charity shops that the Yellow Pages had suggested were there. I eventually found them. There were four shops, three of which contained no vinyl at all. The one that did contain records had about twelve in total. There was only one that interested me: Liberace 'A Brand New Me'. My eyes nearly popped out of their stalks.

I then set off and drove around for another hour, searching for some more charity shops listed in the Yellow Pages. After deciding that they clearly didn't exist any more, I drove home.

I got in and rushed to put the LP on. I went straight for his version of Johnny Harris' Footprints On The Moon. I didn't like it. I then went for the version of Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. It was decent enough, with a big break, but not one I could see myself going back to. I went to the version of MacArthur Park. I was pleasantly surprised as it was only the bit that goes all groovy and then it segues the pretty funky Echo Park, but again, not exactly something that would occupy a permanent place on my turntable. Disappointed, I needle-dropped the rest of the LP until I hit Mixed Emotions.

Imagine if David Axelrod played tinny piano and wore shirts with elaborate cuffs and you'd be about right. What a thoroughly daft, bombastic, groovy, dark, cheesy little number.

Now, there are people out there, possibly even posters here, who would describe this as a wasted day and a frustrating dig.

    I had a whale of a time.

    Viva VV and VG+.

highlights from the last litttle while:

top left is "ONE NIGHT AT UADDAN CASINO WITH ESTRELLA BAND" - has a tasty cover of "chain of fools" that is quite speedy and has some fuzz in it.
I absolutely LOVE the first Flo & Eddie LP - hasn't left the decks in ages!!!
EDGAR BROUGHTON is much better than i expected it to be - a decent listen thrughout.
very pleased with the MIND EXPANDERS - i need more like this!

filled a few 'vinyl vulture' holes in my collection from various charities and pound bins, lots of one-tracker action here:

"TRUMPETS A GO GO" is pretty mental!

    plus various 45's:

NORAH - "battle for my love" (mad spanish glam stuff - -i really want her other single now)
LOS PEKENIKES - "saltamontes" (mental spanish moog stuff - have they done much else worth getting?)
LINK WRAY - "hidden charms" (punk!!)
EDGAR BROUGHTON BAND - "apache droupout" (nice to get a p/s sleeve of this stupid song)
WALRUS - "who can i trust" (ace horn rock)
SUPERSISTER- "she was naked" (both sides are amazing!)
WHITE DENIM - "i start to run" (great)
NEW INSPIRATION - "lonmesome road" (decent-ish psych-y rock)
    ROCK-A-TEENS - "woo hoo" (classicccccccc)
RITA - "sexologie" (another great 2-sider - - pleased to get it for a quid)
KINKS - "she's got everything" (finally!)
    HOLLIES - "jennifer eccles"
HARD HORSE - "let it ride" (great and slightly glammy rock)
BURT BACHARACH - "something big" (love this song)
OTIS REDDING - "satisfaction" (blinding cover - -went down really well at a wedding disco last weekend)
MUNGO JERRY - "alright alright alright" (excellent Dutronc cover . ..great drums)
ZOO GANG - "jungle juice" (McCartney penned moog stupidness. not very good)
LINK WRAY - "i'm so glad, i'm so pround" (on Virgin, later bar-rock sounds. love this)
LES COOPER & SOUL ROCKERS - "wiggle wobble"
    - "lets do the Boston monkey" (amazing r&b stuff)
COMMODORES - "machine gun" (UBB classic)

Is "She's Got Everything" the most out-of-tune guitar committed to record?

    Cheapo fun today...

Anita O'Day has her swingin, bluesy moments. Sylvia does nice enough Swedish latin. The Electrecord 7" is Orchestra Zephir feat. Kisfalussy Balint: 'Keresek Egy Lanyt' which is cool Rumanian freakbeat/pop.

Just traded a load of eastern European stuff off a mate.

    lp's

    Sarolta Zalatnay - S/T (supraphon)
Had a quick listen and I really like "freak".

    The Matadors (supraphon)
    Sounds pretty solid to me.

Stan Borys - Szukam Przyjaciela (Muzza)
Still need to give it a spin.

Stan Borys - To Ziemia (Pronit)
    See above.

    Corvina - Utak elott,utak utah
    Funky Hungarian prog.

    Wislanie 69 (pronit)
Just needle dropped it, still need to give it proper listen.

Marta Kubisova - Songy a Balady (supraphon)
Really liking the drum heavy "tak dej se k nam a projdem svet".

    Czerwono - Czarni (Muzza).
A bit of one tracker in the shape of "I don't think about you today".

    Kati Kovacs (amiga)
Finally Ive been after this one for a while. Really like "Sehnucht" and "wind, komm, bring den regen her".

    45's

The Blue effect - Slunechy hrob/Ive got my mojo working (panton)

The Bluesmen - proc nemohu spat/the house full of blues (supraphon)
    Great psychy double sider.

I wouldn't fret too much mate I would only get it if it's cheap. I still need to give it a proper listen, but there's one nice long track with some funky flutes.

Which one have you got like?

The only other one Ive got is this one -

It's got one great track on it.

there's usually loads of copies on ebay.de for nowt.

plus the only 2 good tracks off it are both available on tasty 45s.

of the KK LPs i've had these two are worth picking up due to having good album tracks that (i think) are unavailble on 45:
