RING OF BRIGHT WATER

Bill Travers, Virginia McKenna in some stunning tartan skirts and an otter that comes to a brutal end. This film traumatised me deeply as a kid.
The shark hunt is brilliant, though. They harpoon a shark, cut it up, buy a rickety oil driven freezer and put the sharkmeat in it.

for those in the UK/ able to find it elsewhere, Terry Nutkin did a piece on the time he spent with Gavin Maxwell (author of Ring Of Bright Water), broadcast on Radio 4 last week, still on iPlayer for now...

This was a good listen.I like the way Uncle Tel narrates aswell.Look forward to this weeks episode.

I watched 'Man of Violence' and the extra film on the dvd 'The Big Switch' both Pete Walker films from the late 60s. The former is a bit slow but the latter is a nice groovy piece of late 60s drama with Timebox appearing at the start all pepped up playing some soul jam.

saw the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus last night and
it was pretty good. A lot better than Baron Munchausen but
not as good as Brazil. There were some memorable bits, Lily Cole
in a gondala with just her bra & panties on was tastefully done and
Jude Law walking around the countryside in 100ft high stilts with a
manic grin on his face, just the usual bonkers Gilliam fare then.

Going to see The Hurt Locker on Wednesday, saw a trailer for it last
week and it looks incredibly tense & exciting.

You've got to admire Nutkins' commitment to untamed side tufts. And otters, of course.

The other thing that struck me about ROBW is that everyone in the small west Highland village has a strained RADA Morningside accent. Virginia McKenna sounds positively South African at times.

Incredible film from 1967 that drifts more and more into the surreal the longer it goes on

Not to piss on your chips, but was really looking forward to this after being seduced by all the glowing reviews and loving Jarhead and was slightly disappointed.

Yeah. I was trying to mirror the listening thread, but "Recently I have been watching the following feature films not television programmes" is a bit ungainly.

I'd try again, but it's already starting to look enough like imDB round here anyway.

Anyway, when I wasn't rubbing my chin over the mise en scene of the otter film, I 've been gawping at La Biblioteka.

In the early 80s I was introduced to the roadmender that killed the otter, just a few yards away from where it happened in Glenelg. Big Angus his name was....and he was a serious drinker/alcoholic.

Watched 'The Caretaker' (adaptation of Pinter's play) at the week-end - compelling, bonkers, funny - lots of acting by Pleasance, Bates and Robert (how could he know he would go from this to the nail-scraping-on-the-board moment in blockbuster 'Jaws'?) Shaw.

Not seen owt at the pictures for a while-mainly cos the multiplex doesnt put owt good/abit different. Tv wise-Harpers Island has been good on BBC3.

Sneaking away from the laptop for 80 minutes, I went to the NFT at lunchtime, and watched a lovely documentary about

and its lovely. he comes across exactly as you'd hope he would. they get full access, lots of interviews with him/ follow him around etc, and some fantastic archive footage.

the URL above has the trailer on it. so far, it's only on the festival circuit, seek it out.

I just read John Sargeant's book this weekend but there's no strictly ballroom in it at all. Very disappointing, just stuff about some old girlfriend of his called Maggie?
