Any thoughts on it? I'm really excited to see it....
My excitement for Dark Knight is matched only by my apathy for the boring-looking new Spiderman.

Just a nice conclusion to the trilogy. Long, actionfilled, new scary villian, more about Bruce Wayne's inner conflict, enough anti-hero pathos, and Nolan really flexes his visual muscle like in Inception and the previous Dark Knight. A clever adventure blockbuster for grownups. Much better than Prometheus to me.

Watched 'Gold Told Me To' last night (I think maybe on recommendation of this thread). Like Q, it's more of the same combo of gritty new york cop with surreal supernatural goings-on, filmed with very low budget and all the better for it. Very Philip K Dickish. The slightly disjointed story just made it more intriguing in a way.

This looks awesome! Reminds me of Don't Look Now but rawer. One man-job by blaxpo-legend Larry Cohen.

I remember it only being about 40 minutes long though... is a feature film?

I enjoyed Prometheus in 2D, someone said I should have watched the 3D version but hey ho. Then again, I did leave the cinema with lots of questions and strange theories, it certainly posed more questions than answers and the dialogue was patchy in places, and some of the plot was odd. I guess you have to kind of try and forget the Alien franchise and treat it as a work on it's own terms. The visuals were amazing though. My son went to see Dark Knight last knight and he was raving about it.
Chris Nolan is also involved in the next Superman installment which does look interesting, the trailer which has just gone viral gives absolutely [I]nothing[I] away, which I thought was quite a cool ploy really. Why reveal all your cards in the promo trailer? Thats what irritates me about big budget trailers now, they show almost the whole plot. No thanks! I've seen the whole premise of the movie in 3 minutes and 45 seconds!
The sequel to that Liam Neeson 'Taken' film looks quite good though. The first one was alright.

Kinda looking forward to the next Jason Bourne. Jeremy Renner is both badass and angst in a good way.
Plus they're bringing back some of the CIA people he fought the first time around. "It's still Treadstone but without the flaws". Yes please!

And so you should - the soundtrack is ACE. We tried to licence it for Licorice Soul year ago but failed miserably (so long ago now I can't remember why our attempt failed!)....

Know it very well. Have seen the film many times. It's a classic in DK.
Talked to the director once where he told me they only did one take of the funky track and also deleted the master afterwards so only the circa 500 copies oif the record exist.

Could that be the reason Sie failed?

Watched French Connection for the first time since I was a teenager recently.

Quite odd it won 5 Oscars because imo it's not very far from your standard B-action movie. It's great though - not just what I normally associate with Oscars standards. (In fact I'd say it's great despite being awarded 5 Oscars).

Not much happens really - a bunch of cops and smugglers spend most of the time shadowing and/or chasing each other on foot, by car, subways... and that's about describes the whole plot.

What I like - great 70s NY scenery, really gritty and grimey + ditto clothes to boot. Just a great watch for seeing a part of what NY (at least parts of it) looked like in the early 70s.

Any other movie recommendations with tons of great footage of NY (or other major US cities, though I seem to like NY best) in the 70s?

Be careful with The French Connection as it is one of my alltime faves. Yes, it's a great film for aesthetic reasons, which is equally as important as, if not more than, plot.

Other gritty, grimey 1970s/1980s NYC depictions:
    The taking of Pelham 123
    Fort Apache The Bronx
    Taxi driver
    Mean streets
    Wild style
    Style wars
Beat this - A hiphop history
    Marathon Man
    Serpico
    Shaft
    Coffy
    Foxy Brown
    Black Caesar

We were prepared to re-master from a vinyl copy held at L.Soul Towers, but we couldn't get final agreement with the director...

(Ed E Man may appear at some point and re-write history, correctly... and remind me what *really* happened)

Really? I couldn't stand it.... Seemed like a really long list of antisocial but uninteresting things done in a row by a psychopath. Why would anyone give a shit?
Being really long and depicting the passing of years by wearing different moustaches does not make A film epic.

I used to work with a lot of French peeps and so I had been well schooled in the whole Public Enemy No.1 cult of personality they had for Mesrine and so I was slobbering to find out more by the time the films were released.

Also, I'm a sucker for a gangster film..!

I've been watching Jacques Cousteau. Brilliant stuff, full of astonishing imagery - and interesting to see their 20th century attititudes to nature - catch it, kill it, study it. I've a strong stomach, but I baulked at them killing a puffer fish for shits and giggles and, appallingly, hitching a ride on a turtle as it tries desperately to get away from them. I watched one last night where they were in the middle of a squid breeding ground, and their primary thought seemed to be 'calimari'. It's fascinating stuff though, and eerily beautiful. The crew's trunks are also ridiculously small.

Rod Serling narrates, and his commentary is worth the price of admission alone - he described a shoal of fish escaping a predator as 'bursting like a golden grenade'. I'm going to get myself a red wool hat.
