I overheard this something like this conversation at a record fair last year (or so):

    - Hello Bert (or whatever the name was), wow you seem to have lost some weight since time we met
    - I've lost "so and so much weight (don't remember but it was a significant amount)" last year, it was time to do something
    - Yeah, that's really healthy and good for you
    - Bah... I just had to, I couldn't get into the record crates any more because my belly was in the way...

And I can add - the humour in it for me lies not in that he was overweight, but that he scuffed at the health aspect and saw it from a strictly record collecting point of view...

Well whatever motivation works for you I suppose.

Not my idea... but group participation works wonders.

At work last year a large group of us (no pun intended), did this every Friday.

Some of the staff who were very conscious about their actual weight admitted as much and teamed up with others who felt the same. Those people read each others weight and simply wrote on the board whether they were + or -.

Interestingly those people lost the most. One woman lost about 12 pounds in 3 months and said she felt fantastic.

Interestingly... everyone had lost some weight after the three month period ( a few pounds), but crucially, NOBODY gained weight at all.

Of course... a lot of doing something like this on a board will require good ol' fashioned honesty... but we all have that by the bucketful.

If it's a go-er..the thread could be moved to a quieter part of the board like snippets or something....

I like the idea but i'm somewhat confused by the weight issue.

I had been underweight all my life.
I was recently measured in hospital & told i was close to being overweight.
    Measurements:

    Height: 5 Ft 10 & a half
    Weight: 12 Stone

So do i qualify to join (my belly does protude with middle age).

re the weight loss thing: just remember that playing 45s burns up more calories than playing 33s - might even be time to dig out the 78s perhaps?

    Ian -

This thread is very close to my heart this week.

I've woken up to the new year and had to face the fact that (a) I'm ridiculously overweight and (b) I'm shit with money, due in no small part to the fact that over the last couple of years, hanging around with you guys here has made me feel I have to try and own every single song I ever hear that I dig on OG vinyl, which rarely comes for cheap. As a result, I've ended up becoming more fixated on the hunting down and purchasing of items than on actually just sitting and listening.

So my trip for the next few months is both to lose weight and get fitter and also to indulge in no ebay purchases, far fewer real world purchases and to generally just try to get my finances in order and to listen to the insane backlog I've accumulated over recent months and years.

I weighed myself on the morning of January 1st and was shocked and depressed to find I clocked in at exactly 117 kilos - that's 18 stone 5.9 pounds in old money.

Whichever way you slice, that's way too much and I gain no joy from relaying this tale.

I am, luckily, far too vain to accept this state of affairs and so the last two days have seen my pounding the streets for twenty minutes, waking up aching like shit, but feeling good to be out and about and actually working some of the insanely under-used muscles in my middle-aged carcass.

Which, to cut a long story short, is my way of saying that I'm in.

It feels to me like both had gotten slightly out of control of late - along with abuse of bloody formally legal powders, it should be added, which are now mercifully banned!!

I'm going to try and go down the Neil Young / Iggy / Red Hot Chilli Peppers road of exercise being my brand new drug!

I too struggle with my weight, ranging from chubby to porky to positively corpulent, so I'm in too. I've been 18 stone before, Hugh, but I'm about six inches shorter than you, so I wouldn't worry too much.

I don't really do new year resolutions but I am a fat f*cker and that's going to change this year. Sorry Ian but I'm not brave enough to bare my blubber on here but the best of luck to you (and everyone more coragous than me that's joining in).

Good idea - put my name down

Have put on absurd amounts of weight this year due to house, job, family, money issues etc but it can't go on!

Have given up alcohol for the last three months and actually feel a hell of a lot happier - think i'll stay dry until i've retired/paid off the mortgage/the kids have left home (roughly 32 years then....)

Good, well that's the motivation for the 'clean up your flat' drive sorted then!

Seriously though, I'm in for the weight loss drive as heart and thyroid issues have seen my weight plummet to schoolboy litheness and rocket right back to 'get off you're squashing me' just within the last three years. I'll have to buy some new scales first though, as I threw away the last ones when it all became too depressing!

I really ought to do some exercise, working 7-6 doesn't leave me much time.

Food wise I guess you could call me a Pescetarianism (veggie but eat fish) due to the missus being veggie all her life, her doing the cooking, me had enough of the years of nagging/comments and not being fussed either way on meat now with all the alternatives.

Was quite happy to get back into my fav Levi 507s 32w just before xmas, not sure if that was due to the new diet or the week or so of not really eating about a month or so ago due to some "family probs"

I guess im 5'11" ish and about 12stone 8 (180lbs on the dodgy digital scales that read different depending where you put them) dunno if thats overweight/average or whatnot...just abit of a belly

Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

You don't have to post your weight Lee.

Just get your kids or partner to note your weight down (PM it to yourself if you lose bits of paper?) and on Week one you'd be 'zero.'

Lose one pound in a week and you'd post '-1.' The evidence from my experience at work with colleagues clearly indicated that, at the very least, you don't gain when you're monitoring yourself regularly, and that surely is a damned good start.

(Alternatively, just follow the participants on this board over the 12 weeks and keep PM-ing your own progress to yourself).

Cheers JJ, GK, Victor and PP67! I'll post a suggested format shortly and ask the other Mods if it's OK to post the thread somewhere away from General Natter in a quieter section. (No complaints from the NRR: haterz then). Home Productions might be good.

Be fun to have a record related title for the thread. Anyone?

(Awaits a deluge of extremely cruel suggestions)

    You know that.

I particularly like this website for health and nutrition information should you want some inspiration. They do recommend a "paleo" diet - completely cutting out grains - which would be a bit extreme for most, but there's loads of well written articles on there, which are totally comprehensible to the scientifically illiterate (i.e. me)

I also like the way weight loss is just one component of a healthy lifestyle and the blog owner emphasizes other aspects such as positive mental attitudes, dealing with stress etc.

I'm not going to put my name down for the thread as I have other fish to fry over the next few months but will watch with interest.

In. So this Friday is post your weight day? Gives me a chance to get down from a near career best of 16 stone 8. Not sure how I'm going to fare on the exercise front, or cutting down on the booze for that matter, but ill give it a go.

The intrinsic rewrard should be enough. If you are only losing weight to get records then the loss won't hold once the rewardpoint has passed.

Heavy records should be appropriate - I've just got rid of Cab Voltaire's 'The Conversation' (4LP) but have a 4LP Leon Thomas Live somewhere. But that might keep the weight on.
