News says he died instantly from a massive heart attack.

Damn, that is so fuckin' sad.

I was always proud when he played a couple of my tunes out on his shows.

A visionary - there was so many more for him to inspire.

God bless, Mr Peel.

The man was a true god, I'm proper gutted. Ditto what Greg said, I think Peelie playing our tunes was a highlight for us all (with obligatory DJ bungling and the works). RIP John Peel.

Genuinely sad news. I suppose if you're gonna go, go quickly and (hopefully) painlessly while with your family somewhere beautiful. And while you're still loved and respected.

I think we should all go home and play 'Teenage Kicks', that would make him smile.

I hoped this was a wind up.... sadly seems not.

A very sad loss indeed.

A very sad loss

I can't believe this. I hoped it was a wind-up too.

Peel has played my stuff too and was a real gent when I was at the Radio1 studios a while back.

A lot of us grew up listening to (and sometimes painfully enduring) the stuff he played every week. Surely he must go down in history as one of the most music-crazed people there ever was.

"Home Truths" has always been on our kitchen radio, too. He's going to be sorely missed.

I can't believe it..

One of my biggest heroes in life ever - he was a direct influence on my music tastes, a welcoming beacon to underground music from around the world, and his outlook directly inspired me to have a go at making records.

A wonderful, wonderful man that I will miss very much.
Let him have the lot for £2.00 - we were only going to throw 'em out anyway...

Peelie was part of growing up for me - the only way to hear different, strange and excellent stuff where i lived - a sad, sad loss.

You can't imagine how much people loved him here in Portugal. He had a deep impact over the way people made radio around here. he will be missed.

This is pretty awful. Pretty gutted here too. I'd just been out at lunchtime thinking "Hmmm I've been away for a few weeks must check out whats on peel tonight".

And then my first thought was "Nah it must be a joke...."

Well at least I got a cable connection to hear him for the last year. And in an instant the pile of 20 minidiscs of his shows from the last year or so have gone from "Must edit those down to a listenable core" into "valuable archive which I must protect for future generations".

And at least I saw him dancing to some of the records he was playing at ATP this year.

This is such bad news. My missus is really upset. My mate has a huge collection of his shows going back to the '70s. I'm going over there to have Peel wake.

I thought he'd always be around and playing into his 80's on the radio. A great loss Â

Terrible terrible news. I also thought / hoped it was a joke, and kind of always hoped he'd be broadcasting into his 80's Â

Just terrible.

For my money he really was the finest example of how a human being can be : genuine, adventurous, open-minded, kind & uncompromising, leading by example without presuming to lead at all . . . I so wish he was still with us Â

Legend!

I really can't believe it, just kinda figured he'd be around
for years.

The guy was amazing, so enthusiastic and still a massive appetite for new music.

Will be missed.

I'd always harboured a secret hope he'd go back to presenting TOTP again, and show those teenage presenters how to do it properly, by taking the mick out of the whole thing - sadly it'll never happen now.

As already mention for those of us living away from the big citys John was the only way to here good tunes, but it was more than that I think we all loved his personality.
His show (85-to I would guess early 88) were a huge influence on me.

Hadn't listened to his show since the mid-80s, really, but before that he was the doorway to the vast world outside the charts, and was the soundtrack to many years of homework...not even sure I'd be listening to music now if it hadn't been for those years of hearing Young Marble Giants and the like in the run up to midnight...Hope someone will pick up the baton, but can't think who.

And I dearly hope his family give him his oft expressed wish of being carried to his last resting place to the sound of 'Teenage Kicks' played very loud as well...

The (music) world will not be the same without John.

He really was one giant beacon of hope for many uk bands/musicians.
There will never be another like him, and he will be truely missed.
