    Default March 2011 Finds

One of VG+'s least popular lurkers gets to start one of the most important threads.

After complaining about the lack of good finds last month I turned up this early BBC Radiophonic related release, hopefully a good omen.

I was really chuffed to pick this up, though a little disappointed with the contents (the final track appears to be the best).

Also found this 1970's Sci-fi serial DVD which I just couldn't pass up.

Never heard of it despite being something of a SF nut. Maybe it's a lost and forgotten classic feminist tract subverting accepted gender roles while promoting liberation and individuality. However I doubt it, as I get a distinct wiff of "The Worm That Turned" from the stills and back cover bumf.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle...

Less a find, more a request for info:

    Found this today

Near impossible to google (thanks to the global reach of the eponymous cafe), no real info I can find apart from Recordkingz promising fuzzpsych goodness or some such..... anyone know who might be involved?

Quite nice, that - pretty sure it's German - though I can't remember why i think that.

No pics I'm afraid as I try to upload and keep getting a 'fault / unable to upload' message...

A local store is hosting a three days sale (second hands 1/2 price, new ones 30% off). I bought these yesterday:

Rodriguez "Coming from reality", og Sussex

Joe Harriott - John Mayer "Indo Jazz Suite", og Atlantic (I had heard bits and pieces of this ages ago, was impressed but not convinced to fork out 80 Euro -asking price for the UK og- then. I'm very glad I bought US copies of both this and 'Fusions' yesterday at a very affordable price... lovely albums )

Joe Harriott - John Mayer "Indo Jazz Fusions", og Atlantic

    Candi Staton "s/t", og Fame

Pharoah Sanders "Deaf dumb blind", og Impulse (I'm not particularly fond of Pharoah Sanders -must be the Sun Ra connection- but I bought this as Gary Bartz is playing in the session. A blind buy but I'm playing it right now and sounds exactly as I was hoping. Pleased I didn't leave it behind Any other similar Pharoah Sanders lps I should check out?

... Also bought the VU Quine Tapes box plus "East New York Ensemble de music (eer yes, obviously the reissue ) both 30% off.

I may not be the best person to advise you as I like the more 'out' type stuff, but imo as far as the Impulse lps go I like Tauhid, Karma, and Village of the Pharoahs. His playing with Coltrane is amazing, as is his India Navigation lp although that''s stupid rare and hella expensive.

It's amazing how the place was packed at 10 in the morning in a work day. I remember thinking 'Damn, that girl got the Rodriguez'...
I got the Frisson Les Vampires on FK, John Martyn - Inside Out, Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom and some indie stuff I was after for a decent price. From a nearby store I picked up Pharoah's 'Heart Is A Melody' which I think you would enjoy.

I arrived at 11:00 ++, quite a few people but a far cry from Zara or Massimo Dutti on the 1st day of sales. I thought I wouldn't find anything but it seems their clientele is quite varied, one of the things I like about that store.

Sorry I beat you to the Rodriguez lp, actually I found it strange no one else had got it already, what with it being displayed on the wall.

"Inside out" is lovely, it's a real grower imo. "Rock bottom" is the 80's reissue I think? How is it sound wise?

Cheers for the Pharoah Sanders recommendation; I will give it a listen.

I'll tell you why no one has heard of this...because it has the most unbelievably stupid story line ever.

Basically Judy Geeson is the owner of a male slave who has to do everything she tells me ..er sorry him, for some insane reason the man isn't happy with this scenario and decides to escape x 23

A ridiculous, unrealistic and disappointing story line.

Talking of which, has anyone else ever seen a copy of legendary New English Library (I think) paperback W.H.A.M. I bought it at a chazza years ago, and have since lost it but it is basically Corbett and Barker's miniseries before that was ever thought of.
WHAM stands for We Hate All Men, and leader Lydia and her lesbian cohorts hunt down Britain's blokes and exterminate them.
The final denouement will come as no surprise to anyone who's read Animal Farm, with the immortal final line: "My God, Lydia, you've grown a penis!!!"
I can't see any mention of it on the web, though.

    Shop digging yesterday and today:

Wallgrens Orkester - Swedish 1973 big band avant-groove jazz
Music Explosion - bubblegum garage soul?
The Great Moody Blues - 2LP set with their 2nd and 3rd album in full I think
Sorry Bamba - afrobeat with some jazz and funk influences
    Popol Vuh - trippy kraut
Rare Bird - organ heavy prog

New record shop had a grand opening today. Digging records with a glass of pink champagne in the other hand was a new experience.
They must have had a really good day as the "old smelly & pushy record collector brigade" (Highland Cow knows who I mean) was buying prog raers like the world was ending, good for the shop owners who are really nice guys!

Not much for me but nabbed from bargain bin:

Voyage - Voyage (pitch endorsed disco)
Ahmadu Jarr - En dag i afrika (afro-beat/kiddie record from famous percussionist, up for trade)
Lee Castle & The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra - Play The Big Band Beatles Bag!
    (Pretty shit but great cover)

Also traded me a copy of Spaghetti Head - Funky Axe from a friend.

Only two - one from the fair today and one by post...

    Appaloosa - Appaloosa - CBS - LP

Reminded about this one by a post last month - this is the German issue, but it's the same lush soft orchestra psych as the US version... really a blissed gem of an LP...

Achim Reichel - Erholung - Brain - LP

This is the kind of companion LP to A.R. Machines "Die Grune Reise" (in fact the CD issue pairs them as one disk) - four tracks of deep space kraut-a-licious grooves... easy to get lost in this one...

"It's all just one big plastic hassle..." - Psych-Out

You can never have too much Residents. That God In Three Persons you picked up is probably my favourite. Minimal synth opera with all the songs set to the rhyming pattern of Poe's 'The Raven'.

I'm in Washington for work and thought I'd have a look around. I've been here a couple of times and not really found it a great place for digging, but still pleased with the days efforts:

Live, lo-fi clumsy garage punk from '66 - think Ireland's Greatest Sounds:
    http://www.redtelephone66.com/2010/0...o-fidelity-lp/

Beaty Quebecian LP by super-lame-looking Cecar et les Romains (respect for the drummer's miming skills):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRDkVU_f4Fc

Twistin' at the Roundtable with the Orchids:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu8fouOkkYg

    Prog LP by Leviathan (1974):
    http://www.we7.com/#/album/Leviathan/Leviathan

From the Witchwood by the Strawbs
    http://babeblogue.blogspot.com/2007/...wood-1971.html

    Some modern stuff from Espers:
    http://www.amazon.com/II-Espers/dp/B000ETRB9A

Rock n' Roll by the mighty Fudge

Duane Eddy - Lonely Guitar LP

    And a couple of '45s:

Caravan part I/II - Cozy Cole

So Sharp/Don't Bug Me - Duke and the Blazers
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mET9qelZ4A
SEALED, this has a sticker on the front reading "COLOUR VINYL" so it's probably not black vinyl, even though black is a colour.

For me it was 5 Euro punt, but it seems to go for a bit more. I've only listened once and can't really say after just one listen. It's a bit big band style, not a large big band but plenty of horns and it has both avantgarde touches and groove. I found a mp3 excerpt with the track I liked best:

Two weird pieces from a local shop:

Afrobeat(?) type stuff from 1980. I don't like afrobeat that much actually, it's too upbeat and happy sounding and the guitar is picked annoyingly fast and cheesy and I guess that's all fine but just not something I get into, OK? But then again I hardly know anything about afrobeat, so I could just be imagining or something. Anyway - this was a bit more interesting so I thought I'd give it a shot - not too happy, discrete wahwah, sidelong tracks and demented spaced out steel guitar(???) splashes for a psychey touch. The one I found in the same place the other week had a groovier more funk-like track and some jazzy touches. So now that some African wax surfaced near me I thought I'd try some stuff out, if not else to try and learn something.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9m1-R3QoUE

Then a weird Sami (native population of Sweden/Finland/Norway) prog affair. Traditional style singing which may be wordless vocals or in the Sami language - probably a mixture because some parts sound more like proper words and other parts not. Some moog, Rhodes, Hammond and bits of flute and sax and plenty of percussion. Quite slow and a bit droney, at times almost jazzy, at times new agey. Odd thing I had to buy because I felt like God knows when this'll turn up near me again, and it really deserves a couple of spins to see if I can get into it or not...

Nice find on the first: Ebenezer Obey, still a star in Nigeria - this is JuJu music, and track long sides are pretty common in his output, even though they are often listed as separate tracks. I love putting this lilting and yet deep music on when people come round as it seems to stimulate a pretty relaxed and yet fluid state of mind...

This is my fave. His breakthrough hit in the West. Still cheap and so good! The notes on the back are bizarre, if you can read them.
