    Default Dub

What are some records to check out, basically?

Been meaning to check out dub for years but there's always so much jazz, kraut, psych, ez grooves, prog, folk etc in the way.

Stumbled upon a chapter on King Tubby in a book today though and it made me curious again.

From the few pieces I've encountered here and there throughout my life I deduce I want an early gritty sound with as much lo-fi analog sound experimentation as possible - ie. a really spaced out and/or druggy sound. It doesn't matter if weirdness takes precedence over the music - in fact it may be encouraged if it does.

So - I know nothing, I'm sure someone here could recommend some LPs or compilations that sound like they fit the bill and aren't impossible to find for not insane amounts of money (later presses are OK). Something I can try out and start with...

Trojan box set - cd only i think but perhaps a good starting point..sure you can pick it cheaper than this too. The Pressure sounds label have reissued some great dub lps too over the years..on vinyl too. I'd start with the Lee Perry stuff.

Mentioned as "astonishing" and "hypnotic, almost drowsy" in the book. Which was a description that really rekindled my curioisty.

Lots and lots to recommend, but "...Meets Rockers Uptown" is a marvellous place to start.

There are loads of great King Tubby records/comps out there you can get a listen to...

I rate 'Brand' by Keith Hudson too.

Does 'Super Ape' qualify as a dub LP? I'd so then 'Super Ape' too

King Tubby comps... 'Freedom Sounds In Dub' is a choice one to get. All late 1970s dubs from the same label, never boring, always engaging. No filler.

King Tubby did a great album with Skatalites in about 76 that's very underrated IMO. It's probably called Skatalites In Dub.

Here's Sealing Dub from said LP >

But this way everyone can see exactly what the top selling albums were at Prince Buster's Record Shack in 1970...

... and also fulfils the OP's quest for a "early gritty sound".

Great LP all round, in fact.

Have no idea why the picture's so big, though - it wasn't when I stole it from a blog ten minutes ago.

another underrated tubby jam here, and totally fulfills the early gritty sound request. this one always makes me think of crucial militant steppers on a hot ass day in the jungle with spliffs for dreads. not very "weird", but ultra tough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9alSKNKbhS4

love shinehead too, but it ain't exactly dub his song "know how fe chat" can not be topped.

I spy the very rare "Mario Lanza Meets King Tubby Uptown" in that picture

Any King Tubby dub of Yabby You's stuff; none better!
Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

Seconded. I don't have any of this on vinyl, but there's a comprehensive CD comp on Trojan. If you want some blood and fire roots music, it really doesn't get heavier.

Yes, all that stuff before and this lp

and I've posted it before, but this Tubby 'n' Yabby workout is still my favourite ever dub. I would have it played on a loop in the airlocks in my submarine before the divers went out to explore the kelp forests and coral beds.

You could also buy loads of 70s/80s reggae 45s and 12s and just flip them to find loads of great dub you won't get anywhere else.

As a result of this thread has anyone else fallen into the mucky wealth of dubs on YouTube???

Here's an 80s one I like for its sounds:

TWO BIG BULL IN A ONE PEN DUBWISE - KING TUBBY

The LP has a track called 'Don't Touch My Choo-Choo Dubwise'

Is a choo choo like a tomato? Because you're not supposed to touch those either
My favourite dub lp title is King Tubby Surrounded By The Dreads at the National Arena, which sounds like Mr Ruddock might have been working under some pressure. To be honest, it shows.
