    Thumbs up December finds 2011

All from the market this morning....

    Caravan - S/T (Verve/MGM)
UK OG cover with a slightly later MGM record in it, had to get it as it's a LP you don't see very often and the vinyl was in really nice shape. Just listening as I type and it's hitting the spot.

Yuri Nishimura - Yamaha spectacular (AD-Rhythm)
One pretty decent self penned number in the shape of 'The music played'.

The Matchmakers - Bubble gum a-go-go (Chapter 1)
Very poppy as you'd imagine, but it still does it for me.

Barney Kessel - Swinging easy (Black lion records)
One decent track 'Watch the birds go by', Thanks a lot for the tip Nige mate.

    Kevin Ayres - Whatevershebringwesing (Harvest)
If I'm to be honest only one track does it, the opener the rest is a bit too daft for me!

Nice finds Craig - I love that Caravan LP - I've got it in a later horrible 'art deco train' sleeve. Does the Matchmakers have 'thank you baby' on it? Killer riffage on that!!

It still can. Get it sent to the Bowery by motorbike courier where I'll sign for it and squeeze it in somewhere
Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

Nice rekids Craig. Jealous of a few of those and makes me wonder why I allow you to beat me to the market!

Had to make do with no new records and a Utrecht listening session this afternoon but that isn't no bad thing I guess.

The vinyl Gods are really blessing me right now - which is good for my collection and not so good for my economy. After a period of draught local shops have come up trumps last weeks - is it people selling of stuff to finance Xmas I wonder? I don't know - I celebrate Xmas by walking around in my underwear all day, listening to records, watching movies and drinking a fine rum. In solitude I should say. I got tired of celebrating with friends and family years ago - now I don't have to buy any presents or make any preparations and that's really nice.

So - today and yesterday I wasn't gonna buy any records because I already spent so much. And then I won an auction I was certain I'd lose with the bid I made so here's from this week:

    Arica - Heaven
From one of the local shops that I got some good stuff from during the Utrecht weekend. Apparently they had bought a collection from a guy who became a buddhist and was selling stuff to move to Cambodia - or something. Was a shitload of Grateful Dead mainly - but also this one: like improvised exotica - mellow and trippy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHveEOaTilQ

Tobias Wood Henderson - Blue Stone
From same shop - great swampy r'n'b. Like a rougher Tony Joe White or something. Gets quite funky in places.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_NtOQv0sPc

Tony Scott and the Indonesian Alla Stars - Djanger Bali
This was the auction so not strictly a find, but great - as recommended to me here when I asked for Balinese (or Bali influenced) jazz. Only realized I put a quite high bid on it without having any idea what it sounded like when I picked up the package but it did not disappoint one bit. Amazing.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pGz5I_i6G8

Then I went to a shop today as well and found jazz goodies:

Albert Ayler - The Last Album
Spiritual and free. First Ayler I buy as I generally found it too free for my taste but this one has a really good balance.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBL-NxRgH84

Sun Ra - Live in Paris at the "Gibus"
He really goes far out at times here, with his electronics sometimes definately closer to noise music than jazz. But also some good more melodic pieces.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTEugXElmQM

Cannonball Adderley Quintet and Orchestra - ?
Killer jazz-groove. How can it be anything else when Cannonball Adderley, Lalo Schifrin, Jow Zawinul, William Fisher and David Axelrod are involved.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQa_SeJgI78

Gonna have to stay away from record shops for a while now - if it goes on like this I won't be able to pay my rent... which I know is a luxury problem, but still - what's happened? Why do suddenly many shops get great stuff in at the same time??

Well done chaps Would like a Caravan Craig, nice find.
Lee Moses is awesome Sie, would love one of them too.

Hung out with Ian from Fuzz's L.A. post again this week. Top time
Will update with a few recent finds/trades (and awesome gifts), but fished this out of a charity, Peer Library with an awesome side of cool/funky jazz (the other is dixie).

    A new one on me too;
w/ Nucleus side men - Spedding/Babbington & more, strange LP, but cool

Pretty good condition on mine - does click a little, gonna take a closer look to see if it's dirt. The clicking is on Rock - which just blew me away. After listening to the first side that sounds like the youtube clip I found you turn it over and get this weird slow headnodding beat mantra type thing. Amazing.

Having been too lazy and disorganised to stick to my plans of posting my finds more regularly, I'll hereby bore you all silly with a longer than usual post.

These are basically 'highlights' (Ha!) of the last three months. I've done my best not to let unemployment get in the way and, on the advice of several board members, have tried to up my trading game.

These come from the usual sources, although there's less from Rob's these days as I'm only in Nottingham once every fortnight as a rule. Have had quite a lot of decent buys on eBay lately, probably through having more spare time to browse! Swings. Roundabouts.

As it's taken me a while to post, some of these items will have inevitably been re-homed or traded and some now appear on my trades list in the relevant section.

This lot all came from a quick run round local charities one afternoon. Nice to see a couple of familiar items cropping up. The one with the bus on the cover is a John Fiddy production and has a couple of really nice tracks - a quid well spent.

The above were all charity finds in Spalding (Lincs). Loving my Nancy at the moment. The Graham Walker TV themes LP is surprisingly good. Bottom right is a Moroder production with e.g. Hawkshaw and Hurdle (I think) in evidence, one track is very nearly there. Too much focus on Baby Jesus and other such fairy tales though.

Couple more charity finds up top. The French LP has a nice vocal version of 'Take Five'. Down below are trades from Mr Divine - mange tak (obsessed with The Killing again).

Excellent trading with our Lee here. Always a pleasure, never a chore.

Trades with Expiry. This is how it should be done.

Some BBC transcriptions discs that I found in one of my less frequent visits to Rob's. Wasn't really feeling them myself, so they've been re-homed where their almost 'mod' tracks might be better appreciated.

More trades plus more transcription. Some cracking John Cameron interludes on the library LP.

Trades from the ever-excellent Sie Fly. Much appreciated.

Absolutely love the Kate Bush LP. Wasn't going to make the same complacent mistake that I made with Aerial, so ordered both CD and vinyl. I know it's been adequately raved about in many quarters of the media and the hype is justified. It actually sounds like a snowy night, you know how the acoustics are totally different with a thick covering of snow? It's so evocative of that. I love the woman. Fact. Got the other three LPs on the market last weekend. Very happy to get Gene Clark on OG and therefore be able to trade my reissue away. Stones was picked up so I could stick 'Monkey Man' on a mix I'm doing (eventually). No words necessary re: Gregory.

James Royal found cheap on GEMM, all about 'Marmaduke' really. Was the only eBay bidder on Shawn Phillips, so couldn't resist for 99p. Grotbags courtesy of Craig (will sort you out in future, no probs). And a lovely copy of the Mizells/Byrd high watermark off the market.

Caved in and got a cheap Argentinian copy of Trifle, what an album though! One of my best purchases of the year. Can't believe I never went after it before. Knob. Wasn't feeling Denis Lopez, so have put it up for trade. The much-loved West Cornwall cheapie was from a Sue Ryder shop that keeps turning up interesting stuff that's easy to punt on, will be hanging on to this though. Jimmie and Vella off eBay after recommendations round these here parts. Grateful to those who bigged it up as it does fit very nicely alongside late-period Rotary Connection and Minnie's solo stuff.

This lot was from Rob's last week. Well impressed with '68 vintage Chico, some crackers on here, with our Babs Moore making her presence felt. Jap breakbeat extravaganza and a couple more transcriptions, one of which is Italian cool jazz - nice.

Excellent trades action from our Seven Hills correspondent. Cheers Eine!

That's most likely it for 2011 as I intend to disappear under a mound of Quality Street. I will try harder to keep on top of it in 2012 though!

Great finds as usual there Ben mate. I love that 'Trifle' too, well worth every penny I paid for it.

That Steel band ('Down to earth') LP has it got a James Brown cover on it?

At last a positive review from a source I can actually trust, though the presence of Stephen Fry is still off putting. It took me a long time to get "Aeriel" and I'm still not sure about "Directors Cut". Yes it's certainly grown on me since I posted my "review" in the May finds section, but it's no masterpiece

I managed to get a U.S promo copy of the 'pillar' Caravan lp for $10 a few years back. Great lp but the mix on the one I got is a bit odd with vocals on a few tracks only coming from one channel really quietly.

Some of this weeks flea-market and thrift-shop finds. Also had a bunch of american singer songwriters, they went to shop credit, to country like for my taste.

Soundtrack Easy Rider ... Classic soundtrack, clean USA copy is always welcome
Adriano Celentano Geppo II Folle ... Soundtrack, Italian disco, title track is nice, bit to much vocals for me all the way trough
George Coleman After Dark ... Dutch date, Modal, great set

    http://youtu.be/Gib_rdRA2CU

    Barrabas Watch Out
Gary St.Clair Gary St.Clair ... 1971 USA rock, not my cup of tea, looks sought after, so it's up for trade
Sergio Mendes Vintage 74 ... Spare, up for trade

David Briggs Keyboard Sculpture ... Sidemen to many artist, can't find much info of this album on the net, it's nice though, tracks like Son of a Preacher Man, Light My Fire, Soulful Strut etc
Graham Hine Bottleneck Blues ... The biggest surprice, I'm not a Blues man but I like this, Traditional Delta Blues, nice label too: Blue Goose
Dana Gillespie Weren't Born a Man ... I have been looking for this a while, great tracks with collaboration from David Bowie

    http://youtu.be/DuE98f1fqtA
    http://youtu.be/6icrWqXZQBc
    http://youtu.be/aL_qj9chSNQ

Dollar Brand African Dawn ... Heavy piano solo album
Dollar Brand Soweto ... This is more of my taste, Electric piano and jazz with an african feel
The Box Tops Dimensions ... Up for trade

First charity digging in very long, on virgin ground in the western suburbs of Gothenburg, yielded apart from some not very exciting ones I won't mention (alright some of them was Ultravox - Systems of Romance which was much punkier than I expected, a Plastic Bertrand - Ca Plane Pour Moi 45 in swedish pic sleeve and a Volvo promotional record from -87) this local synth punk/minimal wave 45:

    Cosmic Overdose - To Night
This sounds a bit 60s garage to me, snotty vocals, super stupid lyrics and some fuzzy guitar before it goes all reverby 80s.

    Dead
Love this, weird vocoder sound towards the end.
