We've managed to get Michel Legrand to come to Bristol (woo-hoo!) and he will be doing a Q&A at Watershed following a screening of The Go-Between:

Bringing together street art and music BEAM Live, a brand new
experimental night kicks off at Watershed's cafe/bar on Thu 29 March (10pm -
1am.) Scott Hendy (Malachai/Boca 45) and DJ Cheeba (Ninja Tune/Solid Steel)
will be cutting and splicing audio and video live while artist Inkie (See No
Evil) will be swapping his usual concrete canvasses for an iPad.

A truly unique Bristol take on Windmills of Your Mind, the iconic song from
The Thomas Crown Affair scored by Michel Legrand, the legendary film
composer who will be visiting Bristol on 31 March as part of Filmic,
Watershed and St George's festival of film and music.

Thoroughly enjoyed the talk - he was a charming and cheeky chap with some great stories - could have listened for another hour!

The concert was wonderful - just to hear him run through some of the classics and a few more unusual selections was enough - he's still a fantastic performer (must be around 80?) - but it was fascinating to experience the relatively minimal arrangements for piano and harp. I think it worked well myself, though perhaps if people had been hoping for something more like a chamber piece (with strings etc) or pure jazz, they might have been disappointed. The audience was not full - around 3/4 I guess, which was a pity, but everyone was delighted and transfixed throughout.

He played 2 longer variations on the 'Go Between' and 'Thomas Crown Affair', several themes from French (Cléo de 5 à 7, The Umbrellas..., ...Rochefort) and and US films - including Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart and Orson's Theme (from 'F For Fake', Orson Well's last film). Would have loved a bit of 'Une femme est une femme', 'Le Mans' and 'Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?' instead of the 'Yentl'... but all in all a good diverse selection.
