Late Sunday Edinburgh charity shop sweep update

    one squid a pop

Spooky Tooth - not a huge fan but I couldn't leave it
JSD - I'm hoping this LP has the tune that Fuz plays out on it - I can't remember what it's called
Peter Thomas - always worth a punt
Simple Minds - the article in the last Mojo made me want to listen to these again - I still have the first three but these didn't survive an early cull - complete with Simple Minds information sheet - the info was that you could buy a t shirt for four quid and a sweat shirt for eight.

You can have that LP then mate.

Grouchos is a record shop in Dundee - the pound bins are always worth a look

With regard to the 'minds' - I know what you're saying but theyre pretty thick on the ground up here - 50p to a quid will get you any of theirs you fancy I think I might do my old 'fools gold' / 'theme from great cities' blend at the next Mud - that'll wow the punters

    Default from one record shop

The Bardot is from Yugoslavia (RTB) - dif. songs from the original (L'appareil a sous, Les amis de la musique, Invitango, Pas d'avantage)
    Gun is Polish - spare)
    All probably go to "trades"

Just back from a great week in NY seeing friends and record digging.
Stayed in Williamsburg in a great apartment opposite MacCarren Park with an awesome view of the Manhattan Skyline.

Went to Prospect Park which was designed by the same guy who designed Central Park, definitely worth a day trip on a sunny day.

Next to the park is the Brooklyn Museum which has a Keith Harring retrospective which is a must see if you’re in the area.

There was also this funky turntable in the gallery:

As always I enjoyed the street art on show in Brooklyn:

Found some cool graffiti in Greenpoint:

Went to Coney Island and Brighton Beach on Easter Sunday. Kind of a strange place and really not what I was expecting. Coney Island itself was really run down, whilst the beach itself was picturesque.

Unfortunately was 82 days early for this historic event!

Anyway, enough waffle, onto the records.

These all came from a combination of thrifts, markets, bookstores, street sellers and record boutiques.

Not had a chance to listen to them all yet.

I’ll get some comments and sound clips up tomorrow.

    All questions and comments welcomed.

Managed to get along to Frank’s legendary Afro night Voodoo Funk which was fantastic. Couldn’t resist picking up some of his reissues at super cheap prices.

    Hip Hop 12’s

    7’s

Finally I couldn’t resist buying 10 sealed original packs of Yo! MTV Raps cards!

Great stuff there Mark, thanks for sharing.

That version of 'Uphill peace of mind' is the same track as on the UBB's and what Carol Grimes does?

@llmod1 - top scores and a proper bit of sight seeing...

Did Coney Island when stranded by ash cloud - went on a mid-week day just before the season with most things closed and it was fantastic - trip motivated by Darren Aronofsky "Requiem for a Dream"

All the way to NYC to pick up a Brucie lp, awesomez!!!!
It better get a spin at Brillo
Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

some great records in there. Alvin Queen's sleeves always have dreadful artwork (Nilva is his own label, maybe he was keeping the cost down) but there's often something excellent in the grooves.

Good finds! That Moral LP is a killer, found a copy myself just a few days ago. Is it rare as hell even in Denmark?

I'd imagine so. It's on the ARP/Irmgardz label which you don't see a lot.

Last two for this month, now I'm going to enjoy me recent finds.

The Richard Roundtree is produced by Eugene McDaniels, great soul / blaxploitation record. The Hot Rock is a great blaxploitation like Quincy Jones flick.

I'm not sure if April finds is the best place for these, as they were found between feb and april, but I've only just got back to the UK and this is the first chance ive had to do a finds post.

Had a great time, swanning around California. Despite being there for 2 months, I didn't get much time for record shopping although I did make it to a few shops.

No raers or anything that groundbreaking interesting, but i ticked off quite a few wants for peanuts. Mostly bought from shops, but bagged a few things from thrift stores (which were fun to look in - if I'd had a larger budget I'd have nabbed lots of interesting or weird things i'd never heard of).

dave valentin - the hawk mainly for the cover, if I'm honest. this shall be presented to Pencilface, as I recon it fits right in with the smooth stuff he's into. I guess it's easy flute jazz funk, but it's got some touches which remind me loads of Steely Dan et al (possibly because there's a 'do it again' cover)
    Cold blood
Been meaning to pick this up for a while. managed to do so for a dollar
iron butterfly - heavy got this from a guy at melrose fleamarket. he had lots of US staples for next to nothing. really wish i'd had more dollars/luggage space!
roberta flack - first time i love the 'compared to what' on this. the sweetwater one is great, and i picked that LP up too, but i think this one is my personal choice.
James taylor noticed a couple of people pick this up so thought i'd have a listen. i do like it, but i know someone else who would get more out of this than i, so may pass on.
chambers bros - time has come i think i first head the title track on one of Mr Stapletons comps.
Manfred mann chap. 3 got this in a great little shop in Morro bay, which we passed through on the way up the amazing coastline to san francisco.
alley cat - green onionsnot amazing, to be honest. passable green onions and take 5
    ramsay lewis - sun goddess

buddy milesi love the neil young cover on here. also from melrose flea market.
    arthur lymanexotica
i found a thrift store with loads of childrens records in it. lots of music to play games to etc. this one is pretty weird. scary guy playing guitar, singing creepily.
stonegroundsan francisco band with Hair links. Not bad west coast folky psychey stuff.
peggy lee - sounds of seventiesbeen wanting to pick this up in a charity shop for cheap for ages. found in a thrift store for a dollar in Mission, SF
Merrie Claytonanother neil young cover i like - southern man
the t-bones - no matter what shape... some ok instrumental covers on here.
this bean bag kids record is full of moogy goodness. not bad drums, too. I listened to side one thinking 'i really wish these tracks didnt have vocals on them'. Then i flipped it over to find instrumental of all the tracks on side one...
sweetwater- compared to whati enjoyed this lp. id not really heard much sweetwater apart from the title track, before.

the ventures - the horse thrift store in san diego yielded this one. some nice groovy stuff on here. one of their later lps? if so its certainly one of the better of them.
guess who - wheatfield soul saw lots of their lps over there. wish id picked up more as i know theyve done good tracks. found this a little hit or miss.
the electric flagmore buddy miles. it's ok. i think his drumming is the best thing about this lp personally.
the association a bit softy for me. ive heard better stuff by them.
This school band lp would be great if the recording was better. good enough honky tonk woman and a few others, with nice drumming. just sounds like my neighbour is playing it loudly.

Great finds there mate, if you dig the 'Sweetwater' I'm sure you'll like their S/T debut.

Couple of records (Buddy Miles and Chamber Brothers) there that I always thought I'd find cheap in the States but never did!

Quick roundup from the last few days:

Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood - Did You Ever (RCA) lp

    Enjoying this a lot

Demis Roussos - Fire & Ice (Philips) lp

Never thought I'd like a Demis record, but this has some very nice moments

The Latin Sound Of Lalo Schifrin - Lalole (Roulette) lp

In amongst all the Jaramillo stuff, nice!

Walter Murphy - Discosymphony (New York International Records) lp

Picked it up because it is classical music performed in a disco stylee, only to find it has been sampled by a few bods and is a bit of a raer
Oh, and it is pretty good
