    Default Psychedelic Hip Hop Recommendations

I've kind of avoided a lot of Hip Hop for years. I liked old skool PE, Beasties Eric B & Rakim etc. I loved the Edan album Beauty & The Beat and also more currently some Madlib stuff.
Can anyone recommend some 'out there' selections instrumentals or rap that aren't bullshit gangsta wank.
    Much appreciated.

You'll probably hate it but give these soundclips a listen: http://boomkat.com/vinyl/499465-main...dark-grapes-ii

Actually those soundclips are a poor choice IMO. Try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pljm_pNr-no

This might appeal to a Rakim fan - perhaps:

I really struggle with that album, didn't really do it for me...

However, ASAP Rocky... love some of the beats on this stuff.

The Edan track Spaceship Earth off Dj Formats latest should do the trick. Can't post a link off my phone but there's a vid up on YouTube.

Cheers Barney, glad to be of assistance! I really like his mixtapes, he's kinda psychedelic I suppose in that he goes on about DMT and acid. Spaced out sunshine synth sound.

Sorry to thread hijack Big Y, but I just checked out your track (Davis and the Federation) on YouTube. It's good stuff!

Did this ever make it to vinyl? And more to the point, are you still creating music?

Thanks Ian. I did put a few albums out short run cd's not vinyl around 2003 - 2010. Going to put a compilation of that stuff tweaked and remastered and free to download on Bandcamp within a few weeks.

I'm currently working on a psychedelic dubby soundtracky (Morricone) concept album based on a late 70's Leyton Orient football side. Obviously not taken 100% seriously but I may run into a few problems from Herb Alpert because I've massacred his Tijuana Taxi (the tune LO come on to). Will post it up when finished.

Some good tunes there - particularly the Antwon one but not sure how psychedelic they are. This is psychedelic but I'm not sure if it's hip-hop - it's an instrumental beat though as reaquested in the first post.

(aside: I just checked that Davis and the Federation tune and I like it a lot too)

The two New Kingdom LPs are great, as are the single mixes of the 'Cheap Thrills' & 'Good Times':

Paul White's 'Purple Brain' LP, came with a free 12" with this Guilty Simpson tune:

The GZA's 'Liquid Swords' LP is great too:

You don't really like rap then. Kool G Rap, Schooly D, Just Ice, KRS, the majority of those old schoolers were on some gangster sh*t.

As for psychedelic rap, I'd put forth:

    Shabazz Palaces – Black Up
    http://youtu.be/znDsRydk3_w

Lushlife – No More Golden Days
    http://youtu.be/VBaRyobwnCc

    Action Bronson – Dr. Lecter

    Das Racist – Relax

Have to say, Gangstar can be fun too

Mellowhype - F666 the Police (feat. Tyler, the Creator)
    http://youtu.be/cWWyWI3xUL8

    Yelawolf - Pop The Trunk
    http://youtu.be/np3pU-dLok4

If you like Rocky you should check Lil B and Main Attrakionz back catalog. Rocky's team pretty much jacked the squad of producers that those two groups were working with (most notably Clams Casino but also Beautiful Lou, etc.)

Two singles on my label, BLACK GLADIATOR: it's not hip-hop per se, but it definitely has a punk rock / b-boy vibe, and it is way psychedelic to my ears. Of course, I like my psych totally fucked up (definition of psych thread?)

Vex and PB Wolf (him holding up the first single - Vex is now on Stones Throw, and making more of a funky / bent "indy rock" type thing):

I'm all over this Quakers LP at the moment.

    http://www.stonesthrow.com/store/album/quakers/quakers

Geoff Barrow from Portishead produced a lot of the beats and it has quite a few psych samples.

The Gonjasufi LP from a few years back is also littered with a lot of European psych samples courtesy of The Gaslamp Killer.

I'd also like to push the music of the very talented Buddy Peace. It's certainly very psychedelic in places.

This is the only current non-Spanish hip hop Ï've heard for years and I really enjoyed it. Get the impression they might be considered a bit too cool for school, though?

anyway, I'm grateful for this thread as I've definitely got to try and wean my kid off Pitbull and all that shite he's currently into. Who ever would have thought that hip-house would take over the world one day?

They are from Brooklyn New York. Some see it as a joke some as alternative Hip Hop, I see it as a new voice like many others and ended up in many end lists last year.

It's not psych hip hop if they don't consume their LSD
Attention!!! I know this is a very expensive Price for the record. This i one of my most beloved Records, so my primary intention isn't the selling. I like it in my collection. I only will sell it, if someone wants it that much, that he is willing to pay that much money. Therefore the unrealistic price. Please don't tell me about it. I don't want to cheat ,I don't force someone into buying it, I don't want to drive up the price. Thanks for understanding

Mate of mine was playing a car tape (!) mix recently with some stuff on, sounded great in parts... one thing I did like was a band called 'Dilated Peoples' (?) - god knows what the song was called though...!?

This is great and I guess the baby grandmothers sample makes it a bit psychedelic right?
