Summer is icumen in, so for this month’s Hellfire we take you back to an untamed Olde England rife with witchy suspicions, demonic possessions and dastardly ‘devil markings’. Eek! Tonight’s main feature is ‘Blood on Satan’s Claw’ one of the most endearingly wild-eyed entries in the short-lived UK ‘folk horror’ cycle of the early seventies.
After a local farmer uncovers the remains of a hideous deformed skull, local intrigue soon turns to mania when the children of the village begin to grow demonic fur and perform bloody sacrificial murder under the tutelage of teenage strumpet, Angel. Rich with a lush regard for the green and eerie plains of rural 17th century England, yet shot through with enough sleazy sex and violence to satisfy any visceral expectations. Followed up with a healthy dose of misguided witch-burning, it’s Tigon-tastic!
In the bar, Hellfire DJs (me, JamesF and electro-Suze) dig out their best bags of pagan wailings.
