Default Do you know any GDR (DDR) grooves?

I was watching a 1972 West German documentary on the GDR, when I heard a groovy track named "Danke, Weitermachen" in the background. Bizarre socialist lyrics, but otherwise seriously good music. I only couldn't find out the artist. Anyway, do you happen to know more tracks of this kind?

I didn't embed the video as the time code didn't work that way.

There's also a very promising-looking compilation of GDR grooves, pity there aren't any sound samples (which is common for the less mainstream stuff, though):

There's tons and this has been discussed here somewhere or other before.
Best place to start is with my main man Manfred Krug.

much discussed subject on here and as hugh said, tons of good stuff.
krug is great to start. no1, 2 and 4 are all worth having.
the first ten or so hallo comps are a great way to come across the names of good/interesting groups...

still one of my favorite ones:

most of the amiga stuff can get pretty annoying the more you listen to it though...all those overcompressed vocal-choruses and things....you'll find them on almost all proggy/funky records.

Any instrumental tracks? Manfred Krug and the other one aren't exactly the greatest singers...

He did some library music for the Mozart Edition label, though I don't recall it being particularly exciting. They also released some great stuff by the Theo Schumann Combo, George (Jurgen) Hermann's Orchestra and Walter Kubiczek from DDR radio sessions.

Kubiczek's music for the TV series 'Das Unsichtbare Visier' is also brilliant, though the versions of the theme on record aren't as good as the TV version used on the first series.

Amiga-a-go-go - you can get the 3CD box set directly from amazon.de quite cheap, it is a pretty mixed bag but there is some good stuff on there.
(Disk 1 is the best for grooves). You'll also note a lot of familiar sounding tunes with different writing credits.

I'm working right now, so not got time to post loads of YouTube links but looking at my Ost-Popp Tanz-Party playlist I can see :

    Pantha Rei - Finis
Theo Schumann Combo - Derby (instrumental, been re-issued on 7")
    Theo Schumann Combo - Hackepeter
    Electra Combo - Uber Feur
    Klaus Lenz - Glückliche Mädchen
Klaus Lenz - Warum willst du denn anders sein?
    Klaus Lenz - Pimo
    Singing Explosion - Mandrake
    Klaus Lenz - Grashalme
Kati Kovacs - Wind, Kommm, Bring Den Regen Her
    Kati Kovacs - Sehnsucht
Halina Frackowiak - Du Willst Zuviel
Halina Frackowiak - Ich Gete Weiter
Team 4 - Ich Zeig Den Weg (not groovy, more a DDR 'I Can See For Miles')
Dresden-Sextett - An Einem Tag Im September ('She's Not There')

You'll note the Polish and Hungarian artists in there, who often re-recorded stuff for the larger DDR market.

And if you're willing to cast things a bit wider to neighbouring Soviet block countries I'd add in

Grupa ABC - Chce ci dac zachwyconych oczu blask
Grupa ABC - Razem z nami
Hana Ulrychová & Atlantis - Don't You Break It Again (Auger/Driscoll style)
And there are some great Breakout and Mira Kubasinska tracks up on YouTube too. (The Mira solo album 'Mira' has some great stuff on it).

In order to draw a parallell to the Zitar thread: isn't there a Theo Schumann with some sitar action on it?

Jazz based grooves - featuring Theo Schumann Combo (mentioned above) amongst others - well worth checking the "Formation 60" LP on Compost JCR - siminal at the time

"It's all just one big plastic hassle..." - Psych-Out

I just don't like the voices, they sound too stressed and amateur-like to me. I have noticed that when I really like a voice, it's full, relaxed and powerful and sounds like it could handle twice the volume. Perhaps it's supposed to sound like that, but it's certainly not my taste. Many people seem to start singing just like that, unlike with instruments. But both skills are actually to be learned, if done on a higher level.

When you are still in Berlin you can get the Modern Soul Band and Klaus Lenz Big Band and Theo Schumann at one of the huge stalls at Mauerpark for a tenner or less. Gema wont let me play any of the videos but I assume they have been mentioned.I dont see "Unsichtbares Visier" around much anymore.
Also the Günther Fischer Uschi Brüning Live Album for a fiver. The Electra Combo is great but tuff to find. Some dealers at Boxhagener Platz sell them for 30-40 on a good day.
Anyway gotta go. I have to collect my toenails in a glass.
