Wow, I remember seeing a clip of this ritual on TV about 30+ years ago and because I thought they were actually sticking the burrs into his skin it genuinely scared the hell out my 6 year old mind. The image haunted me for 20 or so years afterwards until I found a photo of him in a library book which, sort of, explained everything.

"I love Ian Levine. He’s my hero."
It's a genuinely uncanny and disturbing tradition - it was also a total endurance test for the poor fellow, as it was a scorching summer day and everywhere he stopped over the nine hours people kept offering him whiskey!

Great photos - I've put it in my diary for next year!
"What's my stance? You know, I like to dance. And smash things up when I get a chance." - Chain and The Gang
It's well worth a visit and oddly fewer spectators than you would expect.
I posted another pic over here.

The Inde on Sunday New Review mag recently featured the Burryman in an excellent photo story to promote this book.
Unfortuantely it's not online but the Guardian did an inferior gallery.
Ah, and my googling takes me to the photographer's website.
Great stuff!

I picked up that book a few weeks back and can't recommend that book highly enough.
