The Jazz Britannia series is very good. The second one had Norma Winstone, Julie Driscoll and old footage of Ian Carr demonstrating his trumpet run through a wah wah pedal. Plenty of great jazz rock stuff although no CCS. If anyone is reading this that works in TV then a similar series covering the library/session gods would be superb. Mansfield, Ingman, Davies, Harris - interviews, old footage - big DVD box set with loads of extras. I'm dreaming now.

As for movie recomendations, The Life Aquatic, Coffee & Cigarettes, Garden State and Team America World Police are all highly enjoyable. Like Ben I still need to see 'A Very Long Engagement'. It's not got good reviews but Audrey Tautou plus and superb directer have to make it a worthwhile watch. I'm gonna have to watch 'Oldboy' too as it's gotten so much resect on this board.

Wtf is Last Chancers? Look, Shoreditch Twat was lame and amatuer and that's that. I'm not gonna do a 'F.A. Cup tournament' style comparism of CH4's comedy to back that statement up...!

Still like the Barley show - shit, this is like normal in reverse.

That was the whole point of the 'Shoreditch Twat', to translate the pamplet onto the screen. And the original Twat was nothing if not amateurish. The 'Last Chancers' was a really poor pilot in the same series, starring Adam Buxton from Adam And Joe, about a useless wannabe rock band. It was turned into a special for last Christmas. And it was shite.

Actually, in case I ever need to get a script commissioned by Channel4, can I retract my allegations of shiteness?

I actually thought 'Green Wing' was dead good. A bit too clever maybe, a lot of gags were happening at once, but Mark Heap is a comedy God and I could watch him putting up wallpaper really.

Not gonna bother with Barley again though. I'll just watch a 'Jam' DVD instead and think about the good old days.

Hmm. Just for the sake of dissenting. . .I didn't like Oldboy much. Sold the Korean DVD on the nefarious EBAY. Liked the opening, but the way the story developed was far less intriguing than the initial situation. . . and it just didn't really do it for me.

However for a healthy helping of asian cinema goodness, may I recommend a short series of Japanese culty film on at the Brixton Ritzy in a week and a bit - on Fri Feb 25th - 27th.

Since I know what I'm on about, here would be my recommendations. . .

    Fri Feb 25th
Street Mobster - Screen 1 at 2130 - got this on DVD - sup-par gangsta shenanigans. Not worth the effort.

    Sat Feb 26th
Pale Flower - Screen 1 2000 - Not seen this, apparently director Shinoda is a bit of a new wave 60's type of fella. Looks promising.

Female Prisoner 701 - Screen 1 at 2200 - SEE THIS! Exploitation gem with colourful expressionist visuals, gleeful violence and some girl on girl action. This will probably look astounding on the big screen. . .

Onibaba - Screen 2 at 1830 - Acclaimed as a bit of a masterpiece, I'll probably dutifully trot over and see this.

    Sun Feb 27th
School of the Holy Beast - Screen 1 at 1730 - entertaining Japanese nunsploitation flick with ravishing cinematography, some nice birds and plenty of m and s (though not neccessarily in that order). Your wife/girlfriend/lady-type friend will be offended.

Shogun Assassin - Screen 1 at 1915 - basically Lone Wolf & Cub 1 & 2 spliced into an early 80's video nasty, replete with a funky synth soundtrack. Cheesy-dub-tastic.

Sword of Doom - Screen 1 at 2100 - SEE THIS! It is lots better than ^(%&**%^"$"%$&^&* Oldboy. Amazing performance from Tatsuya Nakadai as a nihilistic ronin, oodles of atmosphere. . . probably my favourite chanbara film. Only downer is that it's being shown on Beta SP. .. you'd be better off buying a boot of the subbed, remastered Japanese release from the Ebay to be honest (since the UK DVD is poorly mastered).

Woman with Red Hair - Screen 2 at 1550 - Dunno about this but it looks interesting.

Hey, this sounds very similar to what's happening in Bristol - the 'Wild Japan Festival' at The Cube . . . http://www.cubecinema.com/wildjapan.html . . . SHOGUN ASSASSIN / STREET MOBSTER / ONIBABA / FEMALE PRISONER 701: SCORPION / WOMAN WITH RED HAIR / SCHOOL OF THE HOLY BEAST /

    should be good!

    Stuff I dig.

Scrubs - daft hospital comedy. Bit long in the tooth now but still fun
Carnivale - really trippy horror thing
Scrubs is an odd one - swings from being very funny to very cheesy - sometimes without any apparent irony. I actually found him quite distracting in Garden State as his features and mannerisms are so distinct that I couldn't quite let go of his character in Scrubs and kept expecting a daft joke.

I thought Scrubs started off wobbly, relying too much on those 'Ally McBeal' style daydream bits. Then it found it's feet and the nurse guy got his physical comedy working and it became very funny.

But it still suffers, like so many US shows, from indulging in those terrible montage sequences at the end, tying up and aligning all the characters' story arcs into one neat theme. It's nothing more than cheap and lazy writing - pampering to lowest audience denominator, and it's incredibly irritating.

Unclecurio, are you watching the show on terrestrial? Because it might still be in its early days, when it was lurching between funny and not so funny...

As for his film, Garden State: well, it was a pile of cack really. It had some very funny lines, but it was all 'my first film', what with all the dad confrontations, coming home theme and that bit with the family in the scrap yard bit: truly abysmal, that part. Should of really gotten that crap out of his system at film school - that what it's for. Unless he didn't go of course.

No audience should be made to sit through 'my first film' vanity projects. I saw it on the plane btw.

Sky One, I think - I've missed a lot of them as I do with most shows. I don't really watch much telly for the most part. Always find I've spent the evening on the 'net planning my future bankruptcy by working on my wants list.

Sure, but Ally McBeal will be the one audiences would've remembered at the time. You're only as good your last ripped-off idea.

Well... I gorra say, I didn't think The Last Chancers was THAT bad.... I talked about this with other people at the time and I came to the conclusion that you really needed to be in some rubbish band at some point to fully appreciate it.
