The word 'genius' can be over-used these days... mostly by me, but the sight of a grown man on a 'cool' small bike had me nearly dying with laughter.

I thought it was OK. . .not quite as incendiary as the Brasseye paedophile special, but fairly chucklesome.

There appears to be material at http://www.trashbat.co.ck/index_t12.html
but it's so irritating I had to expel it after a couple of seconds.

I also think that they ads for the show were a little too successful in their parody - since they blend in with the rest of the glossy shite that decorates our public spaces. Wasn't until I actually watched the show that it twigged.

Aren't ads supposed to work the other way round ?!

Also, props to Morris for composing his own music. . .very few directors who do (and even fewer who are good at it. . .John Carpenter being my personal fave, and a certain Mr Eastwood being alledgedly proficient too).

I liked it and hated it at the same time. Its about 4 years late!

Much prefered the shoreditch twat special that was on. Nicky lavelle and the sniper had me in tears!

"you're never more than 3 feet away from a DJ..."

as for Nathan Barley, I laughed a bit, but wonder when a satire of the trendy idiocy of self-regarding media twats actually just becomes an example of what it's supposed to be taking the piss out of ? Morris is good at his best, and Charlie Booker's a bloody funny writer (the bit about the show in The Guide was actually funnier than the half hour of TV, IMNSHO) but it's never more than patchy and the uncritical worship in the press etc seems a bit excessive. It's the Nathan Barleys who'd be the biggest fans of Chris Morris, after all - which I give him the credit of knowing, but wonder if he's turning out this just OK stuff to try and get a bad review...or something...

Mind you, the line about Freddie Starr ("you know, the original Bill Hicks") was a definite high spot...

Thought it was good but not much more unfortunately. Didn't think there was much in the trendy types to be honest, bit shallow and definitely late. Thought the Dan Ashcroft character was very good though. I'm assuming that's where the series is going.

Fantastic art-direction/props though. Which makes me think it'll be a grower. Best bit was when Ashcroft was reading his own article. Brilliant Morris journalism...seek out his Observer stuff if you can be bothered.

NB: this week's NME describes cock muff bumhole as 'cock my thumbhole'. I assume its a press release piss take.

The best thing about that show is that if you ever try to praise it to anyone, you come across like a total twat.

I thought the Shoreditch Twat thing was apalling.

in the final ever Shoreditch Twat magazine a year or two ago there was an article having a go at Chris Morris for (supposedly) stealing ideas, jokes, and actors(!) from what was going to be the Shoreditch Twat series, which lost out to Nathan Barley in getting made...

oh yeah. Neil Boorman who created the shoreditch twat went right off at chris morris in the guardian. Totally slated nathan barley and had a right moan about the twat tv series being canned.

oh yeah, saw that. but i don't think he actually linked Morris to the cancellation of the Twat tv series. the earlier article he wrote could have been rubbish, but he claimed the series seemed likely to be made until Morris and Brooker came along with the same ideas and getting picked instead. and of course not being in the Guardian meant there were no holds barred in the language. wish i'd kept it, although i guess it still might be somewhere in my lounge...

I'm sure the story of how the Shorditch Twat got twatted will be in the Guardian website somewhere... I'll just go 'ave a look now. The twats...

I guess it's not a show for everyone. I myself thought it was pretty funny - like it a lot.

If the link I put up to that piece by Neil Boorman is the one you were referring to Serms, then it seems to me that he has a case of the sour grapes. His point is flimsey at best. His pilot didn't get past the pilot stage: boo hoo for Neil. Maybe the reason it didn't get past the pilot stage is because it was crap: had no pace, no atmosphere and no funny.

I don't think Nathan Barley was made for the convience of a 500 square meter patch of London, like Shorditch Twat was. To accuse it of being five years too late is asinine and to say it in a national is being a twat if you ask me. I don't care about his whinging, and before anyone says it, this isn't the Guardian! (though it seems it has a larger readership lately!)

I don't even think it is that out of date anyhow (not that the main function of the show to be 'cutting edge' anyway, it's just the sit part of a sitcom). If anyone went down Cargo last Sunday, they would've seen a few people sporting these golf-style visors with some kind of a headcloth attached to the bottom of the visor headband, wrapped around their neck like a scarf, while the the top of their head remains uncovered. Who said the show was five years out of touch?

And it was always easy to differentiate the people working in Hoxton from the people posing: the people working were the ones there in the daytime and the posers were the ones there in the evenings, especially Friday night... Still are.

In that case explain how the 'Last Chancers' was commissioned when the 'Shoreditch Twat' wasn't? If you thought that the former was the funnier then you need your head examined...

Have to say, I'm starting to get a bit concerned with Channel 4's 'comedy' output of late.

I hated that 'Last Chancers' thing and I approached 'Nathan Barley' with some trepidation as I think Morris is a God, but didn't think the format would suit him. I was right not to expect much and I didn't laugh once. Yes, I 'got it' thanks, I appreciated that it was clever and well-written, but it just wasn't funny. At all. In my opinion.

Thought it was very insular and references a culture that not many people know or care about outside London. Yes we've got wankers like that up here, but not a whole enclave of them! As my mate said, it was a clever satire, but Morris should remember how good he is when he's dark.

There are better objects of ridicule out there than self-obsessed Londoners who are no real threat to anyone, he needs to get back to lampooning those who are a danger to society. No-one else has his ability, no-one else could have done the Brasseye 'Paedogeddon' special and got away with it AND seen it critically lauded after the Daily Mail had stopped bleating.

Channel 4 need to reclaim a cutting edge and drop the endless re-runs of Friends, drop the reality shows and make Peter Kay, Chris Morris et al exercise some quality control. And of course, stage a public beheading of the menace that is................................................ .Sarpong.

And get the Marenghi DVD on the shelves ASAP. Bet Max and pissing Paddy comes out first, along with all its concomitant spin-off merchandise. Wasn't pleased seeing Richard Ayoade soiling the good name of Dean Learner by appearing in 'Barley'.

And that 'Dead Man Weds' was toss. And the new series of 'Look Around You' isn't really doing it for me.

Still, I can always choose not to watch. Colour me disappointed though.

Anyone watched 'American Dad' yet? You have to download it unless you live in the US. It's the new Seth MacFarlane ('Family Guy') cartoon. The first one wasn't bad. Probably as good as early episodes of 'Family Guy' so hopefully it will be incredibly funny soon.

PS I still don't watch TV. I just download the odd comedy or documentary that I hear people going on about and think 'God that sucked! I'm glad I gave up watching TV'

You're most welcome mate. Fantastic film. Asia and France are still leading the way in cinema for me. Until Tim Burton's update of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' comes out anyway!

Isn't the 'Oldboy' DVD out in a couple of weeks? Essential purchase that one. I've still got 'Nine Souls' in shrink-wrap, but I promise to watch it this weekend!

I heard a worrying rumour about a Hollywood remake of 'Oldboy' - like that'll work! Even worse is the idea that the overrated gobshite Nicolas Cage is pencilled in for the titular role!! Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

re Blighty. Im like you mate. I dont watch much but I download quite a bit and check stuff out at my own pace.

    Stuff I dig.

Scrubs - daft hospital comedy. Bit long in the tooth now but still fun
Carnivale - really trippy horror thing

C4 gave up donkey's years ago...and as long as they're pushing titles like 'Extreme Celebrity Detox' I'm not sure a satire that has someone in a room with 'Nazi Experiments In Colour' on the wall is going to have a lot of bite - Morris needn't have bothered with 'Nathan Barley', could've just shoved a few cameras in C4s offices and got all the epic stupidity he needed right there...but maybe stitching up C4 execs is harder than doing C listers like Phil Collins, Richard Blackwood & Noel Edmunds. The words fish & barrels come to mind. Say whaty you like about Michael Moore (and I'm not 100% convinced by the holier-than-thou/millionaire common guy routine) but at least he's hunting the big game, while Morris pisses about in his media fishtank...Ali G with a brain, really.

As for C4, you'd think if you'd had the Ray Liotta episode of ER on your schedules (now that was genius, moving, fantastically written TV - say what you like about the US of A, they piss over us in this area) you'd think you'd have made an effort to get a few people to tune in, wouldn't you? But no. They even ram on the ads for 'Celeb Detox' in the breaks while you're actually watching it...Ah well, tune in, turn off, chuck in a DVD, or whatever. Hopefully they'll fuck it up so royally we'll all go back to reading books, listening to music and having riots, like in the olden days

Like Blighty, I gave up telly ages ago. I'm all for abandoning it completely and stopping the TV licence payments, but it's a big no-no from the wife in case there's a good cookery programme on (which neither of us remembers to watch). The last thing I watched was the first in the new series of "Look Around You" but since then haven't bothered with it.

Still chewing our way through series 4 of The Sweeney on DVD though.

All this no-telly stuff and I still can't find time to email Wayne.

The special-edition 2 disc OldBoy is out on Feb 28th.

And yes the rumour is true, there is a remake on the cards.

    Any more film recommendations?

At the moment, I'm a bit behind on the DVD viewing as I've been decorating so I've a pile of 'To Watch' stuff. Last good thing I saw at the cinema was 'Napoleon Dynamite' and I keep meaning to go see 'A Very Long Engagement' (it's about time Audrey Tautou came to live in Nottingham).

If you want Asian cinema recommendations, I used to hit the mandiapple.com site for their reviews, they seem to be a bit slow these days, possibly because they tend to write a PhD level dissertation on each one!

Best Asian DVD I've seen in recent times - 'Visitor Q'. Absolutely bonkers, but in a good way.

And how come Ray Liotta can be on ER dying of too much booze and STILL be scarier than Westlife's career? Top man. I admire his versatility, but my fave Liotta moment is always going to be when he twats that youth in the face with the butt of his gun and then storms across the street with pure evil on his face. In a cardigan. If you can look like you could batter Satan himself while sporting a cardie, you are pretty hard.

Does anyone listen to the radio here - there was a nice bit about her on That Mitchell and Webb sound on Radio 4 last Thursday. They said the reson she talks so slowly is that she's correcting a childhood stammer aggrivated by her stint fying jets during the first gulf war. The bit about John Leslie cracked me up as well. You can hear the programme here
