Do you like to play tunes when you've got company? Thing is, it's not just a case of wacking on whatever's already on there - I think 'Cabaret Music' from the Dhartma Bollywood OST might not go down too well in an intimate environment, what with all the shrieking and blood curdling, distorted voices etc - so a choice must be made, but one heavy with significance - what does it say about yourself?

Do you get all cultured all of a sudden and slip on 'A Love Supreme'? Maybe you'll wanna freak her on satin sheets with a bit of Sade, every hip hoppers' fave... Or maybe something that you can both relate to, instead of showing off your knowledge of nerddom - Girls Aloud for example...

Absolutely no contest whatsoever: Jimi Hendrix, 'Axis, Bold as Love'. Sexiest record ever made. That intro to 'Spanish Castle Magic' kicks in and you're away...

Always be prepared to play the 'get out of there quick' card if it all goes the way of the pear.

Always have a Focus, Tony Williams Lifetime or some angry Pharoah Sanders to hand.

Failing that, play a slice of Suicide or some choice, The Fall for those emergency exits.

You're gonna laugh but I'm ashamed to admit that last time it was 'a selection of works in progress by Hero No. 7'. Says more about the amount of Stella consumed than the music I feel. What does it say about me? The ego has landed (no, hang on, I don't play Robbie).

I mean the intro to 'Up From the Skies', of course: you gotta build up to 'Spanish Castle Magic'...and skip 'EXP'.

Is this one of the situations where we'd agree the CD has the edge over vinyl, too? The longer playing time and all that...

Don't want to be stopping midway to turn over the LP, do we?

I've tended to find that contemporary soul sounds like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo.. that kind of thing sets the tone quite nicely, although I guess it can seem a little cheesy sometimes inna 'Walrus of Love' kinda way!!

I'm sure we can turn this thread into a funk/soul meets double entendre-fest yet, how about:

Rufus Thomas 'Do the Push & Pull'

    Asha Puthli 'Right Down Here'

Detroit Emeralds 'Baby Let Me Take You'

    Eddie Harris 'Is It In?'
Let him have the lot for £2.00 - we were only going to throw 'em out anyway...

Alright, actually Black Sabbath is what I'm listening to right now, cold and alone. But don't be thinking I'd change it for one damn lady or a dozen.

Oof! ÂIn my experience you should NEVER play your own music whilst entertaining. ÂYou just end up listening to your 'performance' on record instead of concentrating on the 'performance' in hand. ÂThoughts like: 'Should I have double-tracked that acoustic guitar line?' and 'I made a right cod's arse of that drum fill' shouldn't interfere with the business in hand. . .particularly if the young lady in question catches the look on your face and asks what you're thinking about!

Actually I believe I was thinking 'When's Manz gonna master that bloody flute?'

Anyway, without getting into the details our music worked not so music as an accompaniment as, 'Blimey, a dork light you had a hand in creating some tunes that sound a bit like stuff that I like - I'm impressed'. That and the Stella. I think I've just found the limit past which it's best not to reveal anymore on a messageboard. Hell, I passed it years ago!

Sam And Dave - 'Hold, On I'm Coming'
And I've always thought that the lyrics to 'The Man With The Golden Gun' had to be written by Benny Hill.

Oh, and Wayne, how did you miss the opportunity to suggest 12" rather than 7", instead of recommending CDs...

What about Sheena Easton's Sugar Walls for filth, then? She was on Graham Norton's show denying that it was about, er, 'walls' made of sugar. Good old Prince, the muckbucket.

I was at work (as opposed to *working*), my brain wasn't working properly, & maybe (from subsequent turns taken in the thread) might've been better off trying to remember what that one second long record John Peel used to go on about (by Napalm Death or someone) was...

As for double entendres, I still love that that line about 'a one eyed tomcat peepin' in a seafood store' was left intact in one of Elvis's tracks, but they DID censor the next verse about the see-through dress... And let's not forget our boy Serge: giving France Gall the nice song about the lollipop shop then doing that album where all the sexy-sounding songs actually have lyrics about flatulence (so I'm told anyway).
