When I opened up the Gli Anni Dello swing album there is a ten page "inner" book that is in italien, the previous owner as translated it and typed it out on a typewriter adding and written notes

Marvelous can't wait to read it when playing the record

Great artwork, shit music ....... what side of the border did this turn up in?

These were going cheap, couple of Magma related unreleased material by 'Laurence Vanay' actually 'Jacqueline Thibault' wife of Laurent of Magma fame featuring various musicians Francis Moze etc. Sure a lot of people have heard 'Galaxies' well these were recorded after (late 70's) and left unreleased till last year. :

Being the last valid day of the cheap summer train card, I took a daytrip with my wife to Helsingør, or Elsinore to you. Nice day out, and the ferry across is only 20 minutes.
We rambled about the small town for a bit and happened on a small and dingy antique shop in a back alley. In a corner I saw a shelf unit with records blocket off by some chairs. With some uncomfortable maneuvers I managed to get in a position where I could sort of browse the records. My expectations were low, but rose When I piller out this.



Lacking inner and covered in grime it looked unpromising, but at the price of a piece of Danish it was worth the punt.

Back home it cleaned up pretty well. I have to say it's a great album, stark, mellow and beautiful.

Digging in Kobe 2016-08-11

Last week a digging friend invited me to be part of a 4 man team to go and help clear out a shop in an area of Kobe where the bastard train company is kicking all the shop owners out of the area under the train tracks. Very sad state of affairs. Anyway he said there were a lot of rekkids so I went.

I arrived at 2:30 p.m. It was a bright sunny day outside but inside the shop, it was dark, no available lighting, very dirty, stuff piled up everywhere. It looked like it was going to be a grim day.

My friend took me upstairs, which was at least a bit easier to see, but he also gave me a head light, which helped. So I started digging.



A few interesting things turned up, including a Taiwanese Impressions bootleg, and an Akiko Wada Greatest hits. I decided to move position and made my way to the hardest area to access, between 2 huge metal shelves where there was hardly any room and the only way in was over a load of other junk. A few more interesting things there. Managed to get myself out of there, sweat pouring off my head.

Moved again into an easier space. A couple of big boxes on the floor produced about 60 or so jazz albums: Blue Note re-issues from the seventies, a few with obis, many without, one or two LPs by Japanese artists.

After about an hour and a half, I'd had enough. I was tired, drenched in sweat and my hands and arms were black with dirt. One of the other guys said I looked like a coal miner. I felt like one for that hour and a half. I went to see the shop owner, who was wisely relaxing a few doors down with a beer, watching the baseball on TV, showed him the 100 or so LPs I'd found, made my offer (which, on advice from my friend, was not high, around 50p an LP) and the owner seemed happy with that.

It was almost like being let loose in a sweet shop during the middle of the night. I was more than happy with what I came away with, and I'm sure the others found even more amazing stuff than I did, but very very happy to be invited and experience that kind of dig. I'm assured there will be more like it, since other shop owners in the area will be leaving too.

I was only able to carry home about a third of what I bought. The other two thirds are at my friend's house. But here are a few of the more interesting ones:



Merry Clayton - Gimme Shelter (1970) Excellent voice, especially on the title track.



Mozaika - Save Me Trouble (1989) Very strange MOR rock thing with little bits of interesting electronic bits here and there.



Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads. Interesting because I never choose to listen to this kind of music.



Can't go very far wrong with Art Blakey



Cyril Stapleton Orch - Theme From Department S. Haven't listened to this yet. Hope it's as good as I remember.

Quick round-up from me (trying to be a bit more consistent!). Am happily rediscovering the joys of just taking off somewhere and ploughing through a load of charity shops. I could even be tempted to do my own CSC, even if no-one else is up for it these days.





Chazza finds. Not seen this Alan Moorhouse LP before, but it’s got some good big band library tunes, well worth hanging on to. Coronation Street raer – the woman who to me will always be Rita Fairclough, croons over cocktail jazz (arranged by Babs Moore) and there’s nothing at all wrong with the tune ‘Paradise’ which I think I’ll play for mates and surprise them with the identity of the artist. Couple of Stan Kenton albums, the live one has some latin bangers on it.






These were all from a chazza in Sleaford (no mods were in evidence). They were cheap and I’ve heard Shack talked about wistfully, so thought I'd liberate them from the Christian charity shop and see what the fuss was about. Really not my kind of thing and will be free to a good home.






Same town, different chazza. Ron Savage is one of yer VV / VG+ classics, mad funky / proggy / easy tunes, with maximum parpage (Ron’s a trumpet player). There were numerous James Last LPs in the racks, think they were mostly US releases, this one looked reasonably interesting and is a cut above, but perhaps not a keeper. Couple of school band LPs, where they have a go at some contemporary tunes (e.g. 'Black Magic Woman' and some Bacharach stuff), with brass as the dominant instruments. Not without their charms, but not keepers.






Top two are WMS, picked up purely to rehome on VG+. I gave Stumpy the quickest needle drop, but even I’m not going there with Mike Terry and his ‘Queen of Clubs’ campery. Steve Race was picked up because I got ‘Take Two’ the other week and it’s not too bad – pretty stellar line-up of jazzers anyway.






Took a big bag of stuff down the market (quite a few of the trades I offered on the Board, but which didn’t shift) and came back with a few nice bits and bobs and a little more credit to carry over to a future visit. The Forerunners is Ok, will give it another go, but sounded maybe a bit too twee on first listen. Lyonesse sounded good on first listen, slightly more exotic instruments than you’re used to hearing these tunes set against and that lifts it above the norm. Two chazza spares of the awesome Patrick Cowley mix of ‘I Feel Love’ which still sounds utterly mind-blowing. Top Ten Tune forever.






More from the market. Another Lulu to add to the collection and I think I’ve now scratched the Peddlers itch fully – I could have bought ‘Birthday’ a few times over recently, but I wanted to trade for it, rather than spend. Spare of the (private press?) Eric Delaney (featuring the fellas from Back Door), quite a schizophrenic album as one side is quite light and supper club, the other has some full-on grooves – think this remains under the radar as you can get copies for pennies. Martin Denny was just to stick in the next round of freebies.






Michel Legrand was from a chazza and didn’t really do anything for me – far too straight. Picked up the Keating LP from Rob’s, based on recommendations on this site and I really like it – big band, but with avant-garde touches and a solid listen. Steam was also from Rob’s – I thought it would be my favourite kind of late 60s / early 70s horn rock, so I’m a bit disappointed. Obviously, those of you who’ve had it before will know it’s blue-eyed soul, with an eye on the Temptations I reckon. Huge break on ‘Na Na, Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye’ and another breakdown on the final track – so, good for the producer / beatmaker, but not much cop to listen to.






These final three were from a great trade with LDJB – always exemplary in his conduct. This is what you want, great records, sent promptly and as agreed - everything concluded easily. If only all trades could be like this!! Not had chance to listen to Bartel yet, but I’m furious with Lee as now I’ve got to get the other Bartel LP (the one on Perception) - having only half the oeuvre would just feel wrong! After having loads of Herbolzheimer stuff years ago and selling it on during a personal mini-recession, I’m now going to replenish the RCB stuff. And the Psycheground is just ridiculously good. If anyone wants to tip me off on more stuff like this, I’ll owe them a favour (and a favour will kill you faster than a bullet).

Love that Johnny Keating album so glad your'e digging it. I've never seen that Martin Denny before.

I listened to the one with the abstract flower painting on when they came in the post and its brilliant cant wait to sit down to the other.

They sound nothing like Magma if that connection puts people off its more of a very pastoral, melodic folk like and progressive sound with superb musicianship.

Edit: Just as an aside she ran the Château d'Hérouville studios in France what Daevid Allen of Gong always referred to as the Haunted Chateau or Castle where they rehearsed and recorded Camembert Electrique. Did a bit of research well Wikipedia and I never knew Elton John recorded there and indeed named 'Honky Tonk Chateau' after it. Anyway it closed in 1985 and has been derelict ever since but it's apparently its going to reopen this year.

David Bowie recorded Low there and claimed it was haunted too refusing to sleep in one of the rooms.
