i'm curious to know what his most prized record is. i'm sure among the thousands of albums he owns he doesn't have just one prized album but many prized albums. but for the sake of it i'm curious to know if he values a particular record over all others whether it be for monetary reasons or sentimental reasons.

also, ask him if he'll finish his next album in under 5 years this time

and will he ever go back to producing an album that is strictly sampled based like Endtroducing?

I'd like to know how he feels about the whole cult of music at the moment? I remember reading that he dj'ed at a show in the UK and played loads of classic British HipHop and offered a prize to whoever could name any of the artists he was playing...naturally no-one could.Does he feel sometimes that people buy into the whole myth and culture of music...from being into underground hiphop....to say being into the whole rare funk scene...is it all "i have this super rare shit"...."I found this ultra rare one of a kind 7 in the back of a dusty chazza".Or does he have faith that some of the people he turns on with his music are genuinely openminded?
Does he worry that alot of people miss the point about digging?Since alot of people seem to think it's about how much a record is worth or how rare it is or how they went about getting it (a good example was last week when i played a brand new Speedometer track only for someone to tell me they found it a few years ago in a charity shop) does he think they seem to be losing sight of the unearthing new track for themselves/ being a tastemaker aspect of it.
Is the fact that he is SO popular still suprising to him?What does he think about the use of his tracks as mood pieces on TV.....there were times that just about every track he's put out has been used as library music...is he pleased at the library music aspect of it?Has he considered composing a library album?

Ask him if he ever wears the Grand Puba promo fishing vest he bought off ebay a few months ago (I found out his ebay ID a few months ago, and found it compelling reading)

also ask him why he upgraded from an MPC 60 to an MPC 3000 but didn't upgrade tothe newer MPCs (2000XL 4000 etc.?)

I've always found the 'disproportionality' in terms of popularity if you like between the likes of hip hop figures shadow and madlib one the one hand and funk figures like keb and say dante on the the other quite interesting - but they're all great mates, some hip hop figures are very reverential almost to the fountain of funk, I mention it as it seems to align perhaps with a continuation of the 'essence' if thats what you want to call it - in comparison to the more commercial major label artists

an underlying sentiment is hip hops role in keeping the funk alive, not that you need to mention brainfreeze, but thats the textbook example (much to the chargin of 'deepfunk' type bod's)

Infact it's been quoted many a time....i think he must have maybe done the same thing at alot of the shows on that DJ tour...and from what he's said he got similar responses...sorry if i offended your British HipHop knowledge manliness

I read about this in record collector ages ago, from what the article said it was a one off just for the london heads/fags

And purely because they were operating the usual "US hip hop act ONLY plays in london and STICTLY NO WHERE ELSE policy"

the DJ set was only done in london. It was part of a european tour from what I can remember and so he only did that set at the london gig, cos it wouldn't have been relevent in belguim etc. as someone quite rightly pointed out at the time. "Are you doing vintage hip hop DJ sets of EU countries you are visiting on the tour" and he said no it was just a london thing.........

And Quannum played about five dates around the country on that tour so it wasn't just a London thing. I saw Shadow that night but only going in the opposite direction as I left King's Cross tube. I left it too late to buy a ticket and my pockets weren't fat enough for the tout's prices. Live and learn...

Yes the record shop and basement are still going strong, I rang them up cos I was going there in july but it fell through.... I just wanted to check I would be allowed down there (I was coming along way!). The guy I spoke to was pretty sound and said I was more than welcome to go have a look.

Shadow played as part of the Quannum Bumps tour with Blackalicious and he did this 'guess the record thing' in Brighton. My dj partner in crime - Del Gazeebo correctly guessed all the uk hip hop tracks and for his sins he won a signed brainfreeze. Probably one of the first copies to get into the uk.

So naaah.

I would like to know what shadow really thinks of being signed to universal records and was the re-issue of endtroducing something he actually wanted to come out or was his hands tied on this...

He has also expressed his anti-bush political stance on numerous occasions and through his 'march of death' song with zack de la rocha. How is he dealing with america post-electional and how is he dealing with the dissapointment of no change in government. Did he experience any negative publicity from the mainstream press over his actions?

Does his political motivations extend to other areas such as anti-globilisation/drop the debt and has he any other plans more awareness campaigns.

Would he ever consider producing a straight hip hop record for a major artist and has he had calls from people asking to produce?

I think you may have er, 'got it twisted' there fella...

We're talking about the Quannum tour (in 2000, I think), where Shadow did a little audience participation warm-up by playing 10 old school UK hip hop tunes - the one who guessed the most won a signed Brainfreeze CD, as Sermad pointed out. I saw the tour in Liverpool - the bunch from 'No Fakin' were stood behind me laughing, saying 'Nobody's going to know that..' The first person to step to the mic couldn't even name one - I seem to remember him saying "err.. DJ Shadow?" to mass hilarity and bemusement.. True enough, the highest count was 3 I think.

Bill - you could ask him if a Latyrx reformation might ever be on the cards? 'The Album' was one of my favourite hip hop LPs from 1997, and I still often play their stuff out now.

latryx played in bristol a few weeks ago and then 2 dates in london. If you mean release-wise, I don't know whats happening

Hello all firstly. I'm informed by a friend that Shadow's doing more song based material. Namely he's got singers in (I'm not even sure if there are any MC's). An acquaintance recently travelled down to London to add his vocals to (I think) 3 tracks.

As regards questions:

I'd like to know what proportion of what he buys he sells on. Will he be drumming or playing any other instruments on the next album?

Having made the point of things being 'In tune and in time' (as per the live DVD) does he feel he's 'painted himself into a corner somewhat with always having to find samples that fit, work in a musically correct manner and so on. Does he ever envy Madlib locked in his Cellar with a cheap sampler doing 20 tracks a week?
