    Default Something from the Weekend?

Well, an excellent couple of days on the markets, with the following to show for it…Hope everyone else had as productive a couple of mornings…

Saturday was very much 90s territory, and I managed to pull a load of 4AD and other gear from a box…very gratifying.

Four Throwing Muses LPs (always had a thing for Kristin Hersh’s song-writing, especially her less rock-orientated stuff), a Belly LP, Scott Walker’s Tilt (a ltd numbered vinyl issue) and the Breeders/Pixies rock of The Amps’ ‘Pacer’ LP (beats’n’break-heads might want to have a listen to the hefty, ragged drum intro to ‘Hoverin’ on that LP, if they haven’t already). Then The Go-Betweens’ ‘Liberty Belle & The Black Diamond Express’ & ‘Tallulah’ LPs, Tindersticks ‘Can Our Love…’ and a 2xLP audiophile OST for a film called ‘Masked & Anonymous’, featuring Japanese, Italian, Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead and Hispanic versions of Dylan songs, alongside of a couple of original Bob Dylan trad/arr efforts…

So already very happy with that lot, I ventured out into the Sunday morning sunshine to find:

John Schroeder: The Dolly Catcher (Pye) [lovely condition copy…for 20p. I wasn’t even there that early, either, AND was kept hanging about while others went through the boxes first, pulling out all the Stevie Wonder and the like. Just goes to show, I guess…]

Ted Heath & His Music: ‘Pow!’ (Phase 4) [superb take on ‘Worksong’ sounds like the standout on a quick track-through…some other nice sounding big band stuff, too…]

Roland Shaw Orchestra: ‘More James Bond In Action’ (Phase 4) [Shaw + Barry is never a bad idea…and this has his ‘You Only Live Twice’ on it, which is probably my favourite Barry theme…maybe just pipping OHMSS by a whisker]

Bernard Herrmann: Great Movie Thrillers (Phase 4) [Hermann conducts his Hitcock scores – Psycho, Marnie, North By Northwest, Vertigo and ‘Portrait of Hitch’ from The Trouble With Harry. Not listened to it yet, but I can’t see how this could go wrong…]

Geoff Love: Superhero Themes & Close Encounters (both MFP) [had traded these, assuming they’d show up again, and here they are! Can’t beat Space Patrol – up there with 3 Days Of The Condor in the ‘finest moment’ stakes for Mr Love, surely?]

Laurie Johnson: Themes and… (MGM) [’69 LP includes Avengers Theme’, Tag Scene, and a very nice bit of 60s theme gear called When The Kissing Had To Stop. The rest sounds a bit lush on first listen, but could reveal more subtle delights on a proper listen…]

Play School: Bang On A Drum (BBC) [featuring the immortal title cut and much nostalgia fodder from the likes of Derek Griffiths, Toni Arthur, Brian Cant, Rick Jones and Chloe Ashcroft. If you’re as old as me, that is – younger members of the board won’t know who any of them are]

Joe Mudele Trio: Dine At Le Dolomiti (Pinnacle) [pleasant restaurant promo jazz LP with Girl from Ipanema, Watermelon Man, More, Yellow Bird etc…I have a feeling this might be heading Wooly’s way, combining supermarket-reel style jazz & tasty 70s cuisine as it does…]

    A few nice 45s, too:

Jacques Dutronc: La Seine EP (Vogue)

The Association: Goodbye Columbus/Time It Is Today (French Westbound)

James Brown: Get Up Offa That Thing/Release The Pressure (Polydor)

Ron Grainer Orchestra: Touch Of Velvet…/Joe 90 (Casino Classics)

Edwin Starr: Agent Double O Soul/Back Street (Motown)

Sammy Davis Jr: Baretta’s Theme (20th Century)

A few are also spares, or just passing through – probably shove these on ebay next week sometime, if anyone’s interested, give me a shout by about Wednesday…

Ray Davies & Button Down Brass: Themes From The Exorcist, French Connection etc (Philips) [nice cop show themes set from the trumpet-meister, with very decent stabs at Klute, The Magician, Bullitt, Cops & Robbers, Enter The Dragon and the like. Rubbish version of The Entertainer too, but you can’t have everything…]

Westminster Silver Strings: World Pop Festival Vol 1 (Windmill) [pleasant but unremarkable takes on I Feel The Earth Move & Shaft]

Duncan Lamont: This Guy (Morgan) [spare, with Ode To Billy Joe, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude etc…all in classic UK easy style]

Hugo Montenegro: Scenes & Themes - Love Licks From Golden Flicks (RCA Quadradisc) [bit too mellow for my palate, but the more dedicated Hugo lounge fan might appreciate his very slightly quirky takes on Look Of Love, Tara’s Theme, Lost Horizon and the like. A lot of strings, a disappointingly light dusting of moog…]

The Bigwoods: Paradise Beach (Phase II Records) [amazing sleeve, but fairly mellow cordovox/guitar & drum cruise ship versions of Carribbean themed stuff like Montego Bay, Yellow Bird, Sloop John B etc. It’s a good bit more exciting to look at than it is to listen to…]

    Talking no such luck

i think i got up too early..i also got pipped by the local dealers [ you know 'em - scruffy gits with a roll-up ciggie and stubble, often to be found wearing knock off designer clothes and talking about how they uncovered a £75-00 folk album for 50p-yes i am bitter ! ] got a few bits but this is the height of the car boot season-either pickings are getting slimmer or i'm getting fussier in me old age !!
    a few recent finds...
    big ones-

    bobbie gentry-local gentry-nice album-i think i have them all now !

caravan-if i could do it all over again i'd do it all over you-decca-tatty but i kind of like this album-silly prog with the sort of album sleeve i would want my band to have for their album-presuming i had a band and they had an album..bucolic bliss..
    .
a clockwork orange-OST-just bought it for the unfamilar sleeve..do you ever do that?

the magic christian-OST-listenable but not too exciting soundtrack to peter sellers / ringo starr movie..

telltale-rainbow-great folk workout of the rainbow theme!
    a spare...

buffy saint marie-illuminations-supposed to be her psych effort-some good moments and some nice electronics...the only album you will ever need / want by this moaning old goat...

jack hawkins-everything is beautiful [ 30-60-90 ] as discussed on the board last week and here comes another damn copy !

stoney and meatloaf-i was expecting funky psych / rock-now i have to explain to people why i have a meatloaf album in my abode..not that good but it is rated for some reason...1971 album well before the bat got out of hell..

gary mcfarland-america the beautiful-really good concept album about the death of america and it's traditions-lots of big band funky jazz workouts..and bernard purdie on sticks.

    some little ones..

    tremeloes-instant whip-drum frenzy and chesney's dad's finest moment!
another spare if anyone is after a copy?

crazy elephant-gimme gimme good lovin'-flip it for the awesome fuzz psych of dark part of my mind-love this tune..

spencer davis group-when i come home-flip it [again ] for trampoline-nice little mod / hammond instrumental.

the scaffold-gin gan goolie-turn it over again for liver birds-beats galore on here..can't stop playing it !

    b-sides all the way...

wayne you did good mate !

footnote-also found 50+ copies of 1960's film review magazines all from 67-71-some great reading / browsing material and a rotel tuner for a fiver...it's not all bad news oop north lad!

well, as I have often said, I don't go booters really and my chazzer trawls rarely come up with much, but a few trips to the shops, a bit of trading and the postman have brought me these this week:

Sun Ra - Pictures of Infinity (Black Lion) Superb Ra LP, r a very reasonable price out of Rays
Taj Mahal - Happy Just How I am (CBS) Patchy (ie. a bit shite), but contains the monster funky blues of 'Chevrolet'. Top top tune.
MOngo santamaria - 'Sweet tater pie (Battle) KILLER mongo moment, absolutely up there with the best
Cash McCall - You ain't too Cool (THomas) very very good funky/jazz instrumental
Etta James - tighten up your own thing (chess)
Tarheel slim andLittle Ann - I Can't Stay away from you (Fire) Rough RnB
Bobby POrter - Foxy Devil (Enjoy) More RnB
Lee dorsey - Behind the eight Ball (Fury) ditto
Buster Brown - I'm gone, but I'll be back (fire) ditto
Afro-National - Mr. Who You Be? super heavy afrobeat stormer straight out of Sierra Leone
MadKap - Proof is in the Pudding (LOUD 12") slept on hiphop 12, I slept on it myself by buying it and then selling it all of 12 years ago (!!!!!)
Bert Jansch and John REnbourn - Stepping stone (vanguard) Just superb
Thelonious Monk - Blue Monk: Trios EP (esquire) magnificent, as always with Monk
THelonious Monk -The Prophet (Vogue LP) mostly solo piano, including a version of 'Round Midnight' which strikes me as being definitive, certainly the best I version know

    Had 4 exceptionally poor car boot weeks...just Mary Wells - Servin' Up Some Soul last week...and that was it...but pleased at least to get a few today at a new boot sale;

    LP's

Scott Walker - sings songs from T.V Series (with the lovely Country Girl)
Francis Lai - Bilitis ....a really clean one ...really to replace the crackly one.
Francoise Hardy - Le Meilleur de.....mellow..lovin the whole LP right now...yum
Argo - World of Folk...gotta start somewhere..
Family - Old Songs New Songs

45's out of several...two real funky standouts...(& breaks)

    F.B.I - F.B.I / Time is right
    Bar-Kays - Let's Have Some Fun / Cozy
    plus
Alan Tew - Magic Fly / Desert Island Fantasy ...A side rank...B side nice..slow, 'Gentle In The Night' type sounds then veers oddly into a steal from Charles Aznavours 'Yesterday When I Was Young'...does anyone know which Alan Tew LP this is from??

    Massive disappointment of day:

Bacharach Baroque - Great cover, great idea...and a great steaming pile of nothing ...badly recorded...yeeuch.

10 LP's from the tip yesterday, mainly jazz, including a good Buddy Rich & a Milt Jackson, some classical ....

and a cleaner copy of Percy Faiths 'Without You' (listed on main site as 'Joy' )with the mad and brilliant 'Gypsy's, Tramps and Thieves and a storming OTT 'Diamonds are Forever'.

Main site recommendation is spot-on about this LP...spare if anyone wants it.

Francis...just dipping into folk at present but this Renbourn fella is surfacing with honours on everything...his 'Nobody's Fault...' on Mojo Led Zep Roots CD...and I love his and Jansch's 'Noah and the Rabbit' is the stand-out for me on the Cambra 'Best of British Folk'.

Any John Renbourn stuff you'd recommend that's easy to get hold of on CD or vinyl?

i bought faro annie [1971] by john renbourn on cd a few years back and it is an amazing album-lots of sitar on it-he didn't really do anything too bad until the mid 70's i suppose - i recommend all the pentangle output [ yes all of it ] all his solo stuff especially the lady and the unicorn [ i think its called that ] and his stuff with jansch especially bert and john...

Definitely felt like it when that Schroeder LP appeared ("as if by magic", as Mr Benn might've said) in a 20p box I'd watched 2 DJ types thoroughly go over. Might be my lot till next summer now, mind!

Assume this isn't the Siggy Schwab 18th Century Corporation one, on Sunset, as I do like that - and it's very nicely recorded. I'd heard there's another set out there, though, so I assume that one's to be avoided...

It is Sunset and it is Siggy Schwab. This is normally the kind of thing that completely and utterly floats my boat but it's just not happening with this.....

Maybe listened at wrong time of day...? But with two respected VV'ers rootin' for it I'll definitely give it another good couple of listens.

It does sound dreadfully murky though....a dunk in warm soapy water needed I think!

......that Faro Annie Renbourn is now officially my b'day present from my daughter who's been asking for suggestions. Thank you both..

ian - to be totally honest I don't know his solo stuff, but I'm going to start buying it on spec, most of those bods hardly put a foot wrong. Get anything by pentangle. and almost anything by Jansch. If your into cds, then its mostly easily available. Don't think any of the pentangle LPs are too hard to come by, certainly not on the bay, this Stepping Stone cost me $10ish, mint, as have some of the pentangle LPs. Anyone got an 'I saw an angel' 45 kicking about?...

Red face solomon's seal / pentangle

this was the hardest to find and most expensive one i bought francis..
it is a brilliant album and i also found it 8-track too!
it was rumoured that the master tapes went missing but it on cd now aswell so i'm not sure about that - i think it featured in MOJO'S buried treasure section some years ago...

are you after a copy of 'i saw an angel' ?

i have a spare somewhere but i think it is in rough shape..have you looked on music stack?

    hope you are well mate...

Only one booter for me - at Long Marston Airfield, got there very late, ended up buying a 'Sounds of London' EP for 50p and getting a very nice vintage carrying case - and, unfortunately, the rest of the bloke's records (pre-war 78's mostly) - for another 50p.

Charities were really good to me on Friday though (first time I'd looked for about three weeks owing to other commitmants):

Roy Harper 'Stormcock' (nice Harvest original)
Claire Hammill 'One House Left Standing' (Island, 1971, with John Martyn and Terry Reid amongst others)
Sandy Denny 'Like an Old Fashioned Waltz' (lovely originak UK copy again)
Jack Bruce 'Harmony Row' (1971 again!)
Rita Pavone - two LPs by 60's Italian teen singer - on their way to the bay, I think!
Lalo Schifrin - Mannix soundtrack (French copy)
Stone City Band - The Boys Are Back
Various 'Ancient and Oriental Music - Volume 1 of the History of Music in Sound' (HMV, late 50s?)
Takeshi Itoh 'T.K.' (1988 Japanese fusion LP)
Ananata 'Wheels of Time' (Hare Krishna type album, I guess)

    and one 45:

    Chaquito 'Hawaii 5-0' / 'Ironside'
We know when a mate buys it for you too.

can't recommend this enough-alhthough it only came out relatively recently you'd swear that the ghosts of magnet [ wicker man OST] and pentangle were lurking somewhere in the grooves..if you PM me i'll send you a track off it..it's spooky folk that sounds like a lost classic from 1970!

Wayne - if you feel like sending that Bigwoods LP my way, let me know; I've got their first album....glutton for punishment, me! If Wooly doesn't want the Joe Mudele too.....

Ian and co - John Renbourn did an LP for KPM with one nice twiddly/flutey track on it, worth looking out for. Now out on CD, too. (Speaking of twiddly guitariness, anyone else here rate Gordon Giltrap? Met him at one of his gigs, nice bloke!)

Naff all vinyl-wise from me (as usual - where have they all gone??), but on CD I got the Tony Hatch 'Hatchbox' with miniature repros of six of his LPs, including 'Sounds Of The 70s'.....luvverly!

certainly am. pm me if you find and its not really mashed, that would be great! ta. There was one on gemm ages ago in Intoxica, so I popped along to buy it, and some sod had phoned up and reserved it about 10 minutes before I got there.

Yeah, solomons seal seems hardest to find. But still it oughtn't be too much of a headache, not compared to some things.

Same request here too. I've got a good camera,,,can save images in any format etc....and I've tried a few times.

Any chance of a step-by step guide fixed into the 'About the Site' part please moderators?

I can only take photo's when completely naked so I will definitely make sure the LP covers aren't too polished. I like to sell shiny stuff on ebay too.

No booters this morning for me, gutted as it was a nice day & probally the best day of the season thus far
Two LP's that came this week, not for pence but for good prices:
Fairport Convention Debut LP on Polydor & Independent Jamacia on Trojan. Also copped a Laurel Aitken 45 on Dice which is cool.
First time Ive had the Fairport LP. WHAT A GOD DAM WICKED LP.
Straight up there with my fave LP's. Recommended to all, if you aint heard it seek it, it is sooooooo gooooooood.

Never seen a vinyl copy of that 1st Fairport LP, but had it on CD for a good while & love it...beautiful record all round, as are all of the first 4 they did.

As for adding pictures, if you've got your photo on your laptop, reduce it to 96k or under, then when posting look for the 'manage attachments' button in the Additional Options box (just below the 'submit reply' button). This opens a window which has 10 boxes, each with a 'Browse' button next to it: click Browse in the first box, go to the folder and image in your computer, select it, then click 'Open'. Do this for the next box, and as many images as you want to attach, then click on 'Upload'. Once the box tells you the image(s) have finished uploading, close the window and press 'Submit Reply' as normal. The picture(s) should then appear automatically in the post.

Apparently you can host bigger images from your own webspace, but that's far too technical for me, and I've no idea how you do it that way...
