Default Crossover Soul/ Funky Psych MP3's - Have a listen!!

Unknown Crossover Soul, sold by a well known Northern dealer in the UK for £500 recently, Is it really THAT good, would it do the business on the dancefloor?

Followed by a nice piece of Funky flute led UK psych, that I'm sure a lot of you will know??

Please let me know your thoughts!!

The psych track's pretty good - are you going to put us out our misery?

    Default Flutie

sounds a bit like jethro tull [ but then again so do most things with a funky flute in tow !] - i've heard it before i'm sure it's on island...maybe someone like tramway or clouds...?

i'm with divine on the soul track though...i wouldn't pay a quid for it - the vocal stinks and it really goes nowhere at all...thumbs down from the panel!

I dunno, I thought the first tune was good, but I wouldn't call it crossover at all, more a funky rock type thing and Tull is Tull...

And don't listen to Flytipper - this sort of sound is very VV and very Brillo - you really need to come down to one of the meets sometime mate, book the babysitter for August 08!

Is that someone singing on that 'soul' track? Its like drowning cats. The production is ok. Nothing more than average. The conga style break has a nice bboy flavour.

The tull track is ok. Heard better.

    Cool

The 'soul' track definitely gets better as it goes along (when the singer starts sounding like Robert Plant ). I quite enjoyed it, although it's not worth £500. But didn't any of you guys figure it was Tull before you even heard it? After all, the file is calles 'Public Image Tull'...

Must be worth £500 to someone, thats what it sold for, I wouldn't pay £500 for it, but thats me!!

Ray Frazier on Stanson is worth £500, just for 2 sides of pure class!!

It's totally weird how a price tag affects one's opinion of a tune, no matter how hard you try to block out the price factor, it's hard not to. But I agree that the Ray Frazier 45 sounds more like £500 than the one Beaver put up earlier.

But then does one stamp look more like £500 than another stamp?

I find it hard to figure out any musical merit on that track to possibly justify it's price tag, but that's not the point is it? Obviously, it must very, very rare. Are there less copies of this than, say, the LA Carnival 45?

I'm not quite sure what I'm talking about here, other than discussions like this always get hard-core collectors mixed up with people into music enough to shell out more than £14.99.

yes tricky....i don't think the stamp comparison works here really...'cause that is surely based exlusively on rarity....there's only one type of stamp be it common or rare....but the various record scenes are far more complex than that..!

Is this 45 really that rare? I got it played over the phone when the seller was taking bids, didn't think much of it, but for some weird reason he told me the artist and title? I picked the up 45 for a nice price myself - I inquired as to how much it sold for when I purchased a 45 off the seller a week or so ago and was told it was sold to a big name on the scene for £500??

I'm not looking to sell it myself, was just curious as to what people thought?

Who's to say the seller isn't sitting on a box full of these and he'll start trickling them out when/if it takes off, I'd be surprised as it's not really a soul record, but when has that ever mattered on the Nothern Scene

That is giving a really loose meaning / tag to soul. It's funky rock with a 'soulful' vocal als Crystal Mansion / Rustics / Rare Earth. Big percussion breakdown, similar to Im Losing You.
If that is getting played on the soul scene Id be very suprised, the VV crew throw better funky rock records back in the box, & Im not slagging it as it is ok 4 what it is.
Who was the "big" name who threw £500 at it? or is it all shrouded in mystery?

Shrouded in mystery - SURPRISE! SURPRISE!

You're right it does sound like a funky rock track, but sounds a lot more soulful over the blower - then again I've never been one for buying 45s played over the phone, you just can't tell, can you?

Yeah, there aint no room for hostility & its out of order.
Perhaps when you get your rating up a bit Si they will listen to your opinion, no one listens to mine & thats fine
If we look back at an earlier thread that spoke about Ginger Taylor (always end up calling him Ginger Baker when Im in northern company, to strange looks!) dropping a wad on the guy from Fame Academy cover up it smacks of a desire to be elusive over quality.
That aint saying that we aint all train spotters, as we congregate here, but paying £500 for tunes is not available to the majority of us.
I agree that Ray Fraiser is a fantastic record & would love to own it, if i was wadded i would pay the price tag too, but that just aint gonna happen as im not rich.
I would hesitate before reading anything into the Tull 45 being £60 in the book, as this means it is worth £10.00 on a good day and less for the other 364 days!

Ah, buying over the phone is not the best way is it.
I would imagine that the 'big' soul dj's live for finding that one off unknown & will therefore be hoodwinked from time to time.
If the soul tune is getting plays on the northern scene then Ill get my arse down as I would see it as progressive, but perhaps not to the tune of 5 big un's!

Red face ginger taylor [ BIG on the scooter scene]

tell me more about ginger-the mutton chopped marauder...

    have you seen his mrs?

she scared the crap out of me one morning when i was heading back from a scooter weekend in blackpool..she looks harder than he does...

my mate used to be in the same scooter club has him [ bolton spartans i think ] and reckons they get up to some quite dodgy stuff, although most of them are in their bloody 40's now.

still he spins a mean tune old ginger baker !!

Flytipper, you dufus, you weren't dissed for slagging off the track Beaver put up on this thread - why would I or anyone diss you for that?

I said "don't listen to Flytipper" because you said "song for jeffrey-good tune beaver but i wouldn't take it any further with these guys."

Take it any further with who? I assumed this meant that it was your advice to Beaver not to bother with that kind of stuff because no one on the VV board would be interested, and I reckon that's the opposite, so I said so, but not in a deliberatly aggressive way...

And what on earth does this have to do with living in London?

Because there's better records, musically speaking, out there that I would rather spend the money on, if I had to spend £500 on just one tune. And if you'd read my post you'd have read that I do actually quite like the tune, although I do think the vocals start out very shakey. To me, right now and until I have a lucrative change of career, no record is worth £500 (there's very few I could even justify spending more than £50 on).

I'm guessing that Si meant that that was as good as the Tull gets, and it's not worth bothering with the rest of their tunes. Although I could have misinterpreted what he meant?
