Acetates - Any Extra Value ?

I've managed to pick up a 45 that I've been after for a while (and is a bit of a fave of a good few people on the board from recollection) for cheap, but in the form of an original acetate as opposed to the normal vinyl.

Now, I'm guessing as this issue is just an acetate of exactly the same stuff on the regular 45, that it has no more intrinsic value that the it's more flacid sibling ? Probably even less ?

As a rule, is this the case ?

i'd be inclined to agree.It's one of those slighly grey areas really.Depends on the style of music/style of collectors for that music.Depends on the artist.
Depends if you find an obsessive completist for that artist.
Generally if it's the same as the released track it ain't gonna be worth any more than the issue and yes a lot of the time it's gonna be worth less but of course it does depend on the style of music you're talking about.

They're mostly sought after by collectors of specific artist collectors who need to have all issues, demos etc of everything. Also, that odd breed of London label collectors prize them highly as they see them as the ultimate promo & therefore earlier than all other pressings. Acetates were also used as testers so there's the possibility that it may be a different recording or mix than the eventual product, obviously making it rarer. I would definitely say it is rarer than than a normal press, even if it is exactly the same recording, purely due to the fact that only a few would have been produced. I'd also say it's a 'keeper' rather than a 'player' as their fragility would give you only about 50 good plays before is fooks up.

Anyway, this is what I got.... plays fine.... but for how long ? I take it it *will* wear out ?

acetates do wear out very quickly, alas, due to their very nature. they're useless for djing (apart from for the very short term).

as a result, their value is very much determined by the artist / rarity of the item in question. as sermad says, if it was a biggie, then SELL it like crazy.

otherwise, it's just something that's really nice to have that appeals to the inner geek in every record collector. imho, anyways.

wow, thats a nice item - you sure its excactly the same as the release? I persomaly always buy acetates and over the years i have found some unreleased goodies, including stuff by Jacky Giordano, Baden Powell, Daniel Janin.

Hi, sorry to hijack the thread but.....

Is it straightforward and cheap process to transfer an acetate to vinyl? Anybody know who can do this.

A friend has an unreleased Northern Soul acetate so I would imagine there may be a market for it.

Ok, I have the 'Best of' with 'Les Levres Rouges' on it an it's identical on that side, but I'm judging the flip against a lousy MP3 taken from a bootleg LP, which appears to be an edit of what I have on the 45... missing the first half of the track (and heading straight into the beaty bit). I presume that the full version is on the released 45 ?

No gear to do a rip right now - all still in the storage unit
