yeah got them, very interesting reading the only thing i had heard of before was black sabbath. going to be looking out for a lot of that stuff from now on. i also got the vertigo time machine 3 cd box set because of the vertigo mixed cd and theres loads of cool stuff on it. got me digging out all my old rock and stuff again. dont really fancy admiting i like prog rock though heheh.

there was a shop in leicester that was just prog stuff anyone know if thats still there? may have to go down and check it out, probably couldnt afford anything in there though!!.

I couldn't believe some of those prices - I clearly remember many of those LPs clogging the racks of the second hand shops of my youth (..mind you, this was a quarter of a century ago )

You used to see bad vertigo's around at the record fairs loads. You couldnt give them away. Loads of dealers told me they binned loads of them.

Now you've got crap ones going for £50! Kerazeeeeeee.

I would take some of those prices with a pinch of salt though. Ebay seems to differ!

that'll be "ultima thule" right next to the train station...it's actually not too bad price-wise, worth checking...and yes, it's still there!

Yeah i agree a complete tracklisting would be good
though i suppose it wouldnt have fitted on the back of the cd cover.
there is some stuff id like to find out though.
also does your copy on track 4 skip or sound like it skips/ sticks? its been puzzling me as if its meant to sound like that. or if mine was broke.

    Or check out http://www.cdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=1762

(although being a total ignoramous and not having a copy of the CD to hand this could be totally incorrect?).

Been wondering the same thing and figured it's meant to be... Now sure that it's all part of the mix... Is it there to mess with your head or a fresh new technique???

Yep, same with mine - couple of little glitches. In fact, its a problem I've had on a few cd comps recently, including the Funk:Mode comp, and the lp version does not have the same glitches.

    Both great comps though!

On the vertigo tip, I have a handful of the vertigo lps, (Affinity, Aphrodite's Child, Black Sab, Nucleus) and was wondering what people feel are the standout vertgo lp's (whole albums rather than tracks).

Out of the ones I have it's go to be Affinity, but I do struggle sometimes to listen to the whole albums (particularly 666) from start to finish.

Whilst on the prog rock front, what other labels standout in this era, and are worth checking out?

Is it 'Infinity' with that woman moaning? I can't listen to that.

wsm68 - the other label that immediately springs to mind is Harvest (check out 'Mantlepiece' by the Battered Ornaments for a total masterpiece of an LP ).

My recommendations for thorough albums on Vertigo would be Colosseum's 'Valentyne Suite' and Manfred Mann's 'Chapter Three' (much cheaper on US Polydor if you're not a pressing snob ).

    Glad to hear it

Quite a bit of indulgence on some of those tunes - that's why the mixed comp is so appealing, you can get more that a handful of tunes on an album.

The Manfred Mann is more of a straight rock selection (with jazz) while the Colosseum LP is definitely as much jazz as it is rock. So it really depends what you're into but, personally, when I first got hold of the 'Valentyne Suite' (only recently I'm embarassed to admit) we sat in Sermad's kitchen and listened to it from start to finish. And then played 'The Kettle' again.

Nice one - will keep my eye open.

And yes, its Infinity Symbol where the woman is wailing/breathing/screaming and whatever else all over - it's halfway through the second lp, so rarely get that far in.

Was gonna exchange mine, but as other people had the same issue, decided to stick with it.

Would be good to get a glitch-free one though.

There's an excerpt of a track not listed on the cd between Nirvana - Modus Operandi and Aphrodite's Child. Can anyone identify it?

Colosseum's "Valentyne Suite" and their first LP (on Fontana) are ace Brit-jazz rocked up for a late-60s audience. Terrific playing throughout and not too much veering into noodly self-indulgence. "For THose Who About To Die" just cooks. I much prefer the instros to the vocals - IMO their singer was not their strongest point - although "Kettle" I agree is a goodie.

Lots of copies of "Valentyne" around BTW - from about a tenner upwards! Must have been one of the bigger Vertigo sellers after the Sabs.

also came out on Bronze, should anyone be interested. and "elegy" was a big play-out tune on the acid jazz scene in the early 90s too.

the big man in colosseum was dick hextall-smith, a leading light of the brit jazz and avant garde for a long old time until he died (quite recently).

Always thought of Jon Hiseman as the main man behind Colloseum.... he went on form Colloseum II, and I think has recently reformed the original band with surviving members and Chris Farlowe??

well, they both founded it, and DH-S was a big man. with many horns, often in a roland kirk kind of a way, amplified and multiple. and here's some background...

Colloseums third lp Daughter of Time is a bit patchy though.Theres footage of the band with Chris Farlowe not looking quite right and doing an air guitar solo from 1970 which is quite funny.
Vertigos eh? As mentioned before the prices have gone through the roof with that Jimmy Campbell lp going for over a 100 quid the other day!
Never heard the Vertigo comp but I can imagine he must of taken the Can-esque bit from the second Manfred lp,good stuff, shame about the chorus though.
