    Default my christmas swap cd

i'm not very good at making decisions. when dj-ing, i used to carry about 8 times as many records as i could ever use, cos i could never take anything out of the bag, only add to it. knackered my back doing it too.

i have the same problem with my christmas cd swap selections (not the sore back, the too many tunes thing). It's all going to be spiritual/ eastern tinged/ just generally nice jazz. But, I don't know if much of it has been comped, is too obvious, is considered by other ears to be rubbish. So I'm going to make my selection a wee bit interactive.

I'd like you to let me know which bits you wouldn't want to hear from the list below.

    ta,

    a.

hal singer - malcolm x (jazz version)
    james clay - new delhi
randy weston - tanjah/ little niles
jean derome - the moon in me
shamek farrah - waiting for marvin
byron morris and unity - sunshowers
archie shepp - song for mozambique
les mccann and the jazz crusaders - damascus
    solar plexus - torremolinos
freedom sounds - behold the day
    jerome richardson - no problem
    yusef lateef - before dawn
    harold land quintet - timetable
    the visitors - naima
jack wilson quartet ft. roy ayers - ramblin'
pete la roca - turkish women at the bath
kamal and the brothers - dance

see, it just won't fit onto one cd.

Know and love this stuff already, but always good to hear old faves in new contexts, mixed up a bit with other bits and bobs, so burn away, brother!! That Pete La Roca is a long-time fave of mine. Deep business . . . in a slightly sinister Orientalist exploito kinda way!!

im not sure if the stuff i have and like is really that rare i have loads of stuff but i always think everyone already has it. so im always a bit un sure what to put on. shall i just put on what i like and see how its taken or should i search out the rarest peices? though thy probably wouldnt be rare to you lot.

also i wondered would everyone prefer the full tracks or a cd kinda like just the best bit of songs mixed up in a good way like the andy votel stuff? because thats the kind of thing i do for my self.

    opinions please

I have similar fears, so it's good to know I'm not alone. My own personal hunch when putting my Xmas mix together is to go for the unusual and potentially unheard, but still top-notch. No point going for rare for rares sake. I'd personally like to hear the lesser known stuff, but then again, an obscuro by a well-known name can also do it for me!

My other own personal preference would be for whole tracks, if poss, rather than a mix. But that's just me.

Oh, and I also realise now, from having chatted with Brother Lee last nught, that what seems obvious to one ain't to all. Things we may all assume everyone must know can be utter obscurities to others. We've all ended up here having walked different routes along a similar path.

    Philosophy slot over!!

Although i'm not involved in the xmas swap doing a tape or cd for other people can be a headache when it comes to choosing tunes but fuck it, you can never tell what other people have or what is rare or what they class as rare or good and as there are a few number involved that is even worse or better as someone will hear your cd and think 'well i never realised that was on that' or 'they did that' etc etc.

When i do a tape i gag my partner, unplug the phone, make a pot of coffee, roll some fags and find a groove. If your happy with it then that's all what matters and bollocks to everyone else.

    Good luck.

Indeed, sire. 'Tis the way they must be done.

Though I do find the image of gagged partner slightly disconcerting in a kinky kinda way!

all of the things that you are stressing about were some of my concern as well. still, looks like it doesn't matter, do what you feel is the rule.

oh, and you saying you hadn't heard any of it helped too. made me realise that, as someone further up the thread (kind of) said, you never know what other people don't know they don't know.

    i think.
