Lloyd mcneill 'treasures' (baobab) pretty out, but 'Griot' winds up in very funky territory
London posse 'beatbox reggae style' is ultra-tough
zimbo trio vol.2 Monster bossa jazz, hard music
Curtis 'Billy jack' is possiby all time fave curtis tune
Parlan LP is very very nice, 'Home is africa' = serious stuff. Pathe press, but it never had a 60s issue, so I don't know what the others are are anyway.

Love that tune, love that LP - one of, if not the best of his albums IMO. Such a wonderfully fragile, sparse quality to the music production. 'Hard Times' is a great track too.. good find!
Let him have the lot for £2.00 - we were only going to throw 'em out anyway...

"Not only that but the WHOLE COVER is UNCREASED with only 2 or 3 TINY creaselines near the opening edge about half way down!!!! In the same place (about half way down the opening edge), there is an absolutely TINY and PERFECTLY repaired split" (xxxrecords)

Blimey! I turned that Locomotive LP down recently, but then again it was £100 rather than £1 ! Is that Tim Rose next to it? and what's that blue Pye 45?
We know when a mate buys it for you too.

    Okey dokey

The 45 is Donovan - Barabagel - classic with McNair tootling on it too!

    LPs

Lee Micheals - 5th - rather nice keyboard funky rock stuff as usual

Chambers Brothers - New Generation - the LP with 'Funky' on it - some other good tunage too. Most expensive record of the day at a hefty £8!

Haphash and the Coloured Coat - Western Flier - Mike Batt related psychey thing - agreed the sleeve is WELL dodgy.

SNAFU - Situation Normal - more funky rock stuff - not as good as their 'All Funked Up' LP.

Dusty Springfield - In Memphis - an original for a quid - well you would wouldn't you?

Arrival - Arrival - Xian rock with superb Placebo like instro on it - spare but spoken for (I think).

Peter Sarstedt - Where do you Go to my lovely - yes that song but some nice things on here - produced by Ian Green too - the B of the hit gets quite funky btw.

Bo Hansson - Attic Thoughts - the usual funky proggy noodling from Bo.

The Savage Rose - Your Daily Gift - Danish pop / rock group - nice when they rock out but the singers voice does annoy after a while.

The O Jays - Live in London - The funky instro intro is nice as is the between song banter but the rest is just yer usual hits done live type affair.

Love - False Start - The 'Jimi Hendrix' one - nice stuff if you like Love - which I do.

Delaney and Bonnie - To Bonnie form Delaney - More funky rock stuff - spare

HP Lovecraft - HP Lovecraft II - classic psych - spare (well a spare of the World of ....II press -same LP diff sleeve)

Chris Farlowe - Stormy Monday - nice but a wee bit early blue eyed soul / beat - still not managed to get a copy of his version of 'Moanin'.

Locomotive - We Are Everything You See - have to admit I didn't know what this was but it looked the part and it was a quid - imagine my glee when I consulted 'the book' and then again when I heard it - really good top draw sikey rock with horns - it's a keeper!

Tim Rose - Love a kind of Hate Story - I was glad to find this as I've had this before and traded it - Hawkshaw, Cattini and Parker are on it but the mood id mellow - vey nice folky rock.

Had a lie in today so I've found nowt

The illustration's from a late 19th century cartoon depicting a banjo concert in the African jungle - the accompanying text is even dodgier!!

Got a couple of 'new' things yesterday (well, old but new to me).....

The Family Affair - S/T (Saga)

You see the sleeve, you will pick this up on spec (lovely band line up pic with names underneath, pick of the bunch is 'Linda Cream' on vocals who looks the spitting image of Jools Oliver if you ask me). Slightly fey pop-psych recorded in the usual Saga way (budget = 30p), but worth it for 'Loving You' with it's heartfelt but utterly teenage lyrics.

    Oliver - S/T (Crewe)

Never actually seen the Crewe label knowingly before, but this (Bob Crewe produced, natch) set is well worth a punt for the dramatic 'The Arrangement' alone. We get the obligitory covers from Hair (wasn't Oliver *in* some production of 'Hair' ?)and a funky arrangement of 'Who Will By' (from 'Oliver', oh the merriment, geddit ?) into the bargain.

Funnily enough the 45 of 'Good Morning Starshine' from this arrived on my doorstep this weekend. I believe he was in the London cast, although his rendition isn't included on that (but it was used on the soundtrack to 'The Dish'). And Nancy Sinatra's cover of 'Who Will Buy' on 'Movin' With Nancy' is fantastic.

    Other recent arrivals include...

    LP's
    The Blues Project 'Projections'
I wanted this for 'Flute Thing', as lifted by the Beasties, but 'I Can't Keep From Crying, Sometimes' is getting plenty of rewinds. I know that Gerald reissued a version of this but I'm sure I've heard another, similarly moddy rendition - could that be Ten Wheel Drive?

Elephant's Memory S/T I need to listen to this a bit more. It's not quite as good as I was hoping, although 'Old Man Willow' and 'Jungle Gym At The Zoo' are worth the price I paid alone

    45's
Rattles 'You Can’t Have Sunshine Everyday'
    Biting AV's steez...

Baris Manco 'Binboganin Kizi Biting Dom's steez (they're so much cheaper when the don't a soundclip or a picture sleeve ).

Crazy Elephant 'Gimme Gimme Good Lovin’' Minting up to a PS

Hot Chocolate 'Go Go Girl' I think I first heard John S play this at Brillo. I guess it's what they're calling 'freak rock'?

Hawkwind 'Silver Machine' Yes, I'm a sucker for picture sleeves.

    12"
Prey 'Always Ahead Of The Game'
Two tracks of heavy, heavy twistedness.

And that's probably the end of my buying for a while. If you're at Brilo tonight I'll probably inflict a good few of these on your ears.

No... Where did you get that from? I have a big soft spot for Nancy. And how were your Scopitones purchases?

I got it from MVC four or five years ago. It seems to be out of print in this country now. I'll burn you a copy if you like. Not got any Scopitones DVDs yet. I've had too much stuff to watch. It's a tough life. I'll let you know when I get them though which will probably (hopefully) be later this week.

Inspired by the recent Reggaesploitation article on the main site and the groovy graphics I picked up 'Reggae meets pop' by the Pacesetters on saga.

A pretty lacklustre run throuigh of reggae / soul favourites, although the version of 'Sunshine of your love' showed small signs of potential... but nothing that prepared me for the final track on the album, 'Cool Coffee'. An immediately different sound, to the point that I suspect it is a different group.

Turns out to be, to my ears at least, a sort of Animated Egg run through of 'The ghetto', no lyrics, but bouncing bass line, electric piano, drums, latin perc, including a breakdown, and an organ giving it a slight reggae backbeat, and of course lovely loud Geetar.

Choice...! but who is it really? Anyone care to comment / guess or perhaps Know? Because I sure would like to hear more.

I'd like a listen to this at the Brillo fella - Is "I Can't Keep..." the same song as the Dedrie Wilson Tabac..?? I love that!
"Sometimes I get a hot ear..."
