Deepness you don't understand.........

Just been listening to some Brazilian/S. American LP's and it just struck me that the tracks i find really deep and moving, where the tones of the voice etc are easy on the ears; I don't actually know what the fook they are on about, apart from the obvious message in the titles etc.

I'm fascinated to know exactly what the lyrics are but at the same time it can often ruin the whole vibe of a track if you know what they are singing.

The standouts tonight -

Facundo Cabral - "Muchacha siempre desuda caminando entre los Grillos"

Jorge Ben - "Errare humanum est"

Both i would think are political, but i'd love to know what they are singing

So whats yer favourite vocal tracks you don't understand ?

I know what you mean, for example take one of Jobim's numbers 'Chovendo na rosiero' translated 'Double rainbow', now i 'aint 'gotta clue what he's on about, (i could hazzard a guess, 'cos i know the dude was environmentally sound b4 it was fashionable to be) but it's a fookin' lovely piece, and really, that's all that matters.

Exactly, if it moves you - I just always like to believe that when i finally hear what they mean i'll agree or respect the lyrics.

Mas que nada & Roda where BIG pants when i heard the english lyrics (not that i expected much, but fook ! ) and a few Nascimento tracks have not sounded the same since.

Agree that NOT knowing what lyrics are can protect aganst the crapness of many lyrics: Os Mutantes' 'Tecnicolor' Lp, with the classic gear translated to English, loses much of the brilliance/mystery of the Portugeuse versions... But I wish Caetano Veloso's stuff came with translations on the sleeves, at least: whenever I've seen him singing with subtitles, it goes lots deeper than just hearing him does -

Crystal Telephone by Terry Durham is my fave of this catergory. Even though it's sung in English, I still have know idea what the fuck he's on about - maybe I should get a dungeon master to translate...
