    Default The wonder of eBay...

It always amazes me just how often people are selling these impossibly rare records. I'd have thought by now they'd all have found their homes with filthy rich vinyl collectors round the world, but no, they keep on coming! So either they are just continually getting sold on all the time or perhaps they aren't all as rare as some like to believe??

Out of interest exactly how rare is this tune meant to be anyway?

i recently paid about $40 or $60 for one of those for on behalf of a friend who won the auction.. i'd think the hype around that particular tune is greater than it's rarity but that's just speculation, i'm definitely not an expert on funk 45's

I think that's a fair point, apart from the opening drum break it isn't even an amazing tune in my opinion.

But if you have 10,000 Hip Hop fans worldwide who bought Hip Hop during the late 80's then 10,000 Hip Hop fans want that single.

Classic break sampled to death (as I'm sure you know) so the actual song is secondary, although personally I think the track is great.

But that's my point - if it's so popular then why does it keep turning up on ebay? I'd have thought all the copies would have been snapped up by now. This goes for quite a lot of other 'rare' tunes - or am i missing something somewhere?? I guess people sell tunes on to some extent but it just surprises me how often this seems to happen.

    Right, got ya.

Does this raise the issue that a lot of things maybe aren't all that rare, well not runs of just 500 or 1000 presses anyway.

    I've no idea really

Well it's not that scarce. I'd say it still commands a price because of the break obviously, so from a DJing point of view, I guess people can still 'put it to work' in many places. But I wouldn't say this is the kind of record people would never part with, it's just not good enough to stand the test of time IMO. There's probably a 'rites of passage' element to wanting this record too, which implies that after someone's had it for a while, they may want more interesting tunes and since this 45 still commands a decent price, up on ebay it goes!

Even at 20 quid I wouldn't bother with this one. There's just too many records out there that are better.

    I concur!

But what also amazes me is the number of these 'rites of passage' tunes that turn up in mint condition! Surely they've all been caned to death by now?! The Winstons' 'Amen Brother' springs to mind!

I've found 3 in the UK which indicates to me that it's not that rare. Obviously I'll change my tune if I ever get round to selling the one I've got left.
And I agree it's nothing special really.
