Default For goodness sakes, look at those cakes..

Ok, so it's Shrove Tuesday.. and you've surely gotta give up some love to that delicacy we call the pancake.

I'm having a sort of 'pancake party' type gathering this eve, so wondered if any of the foodies on here have any good topping or special mixture suggestions?

I usually go for the classic lemon juice & sugar combo, maple syrup, golden syrup, and on a savoury tip cheese and onion, or tuna and mushroom.

    Any more?

Remember having an argument with an old house mate who was adament that you could only have pancakes with lemon and sugar.

    My favourite alternative:

Ice cream and fruit (cherries or strawberries will do nicely)

whipped cream and jam (usually strawberry) is the norm here, i often get funny looks for using (superior, imo) lemon and sugar

I like to add a little butter to the lemon and sugar combo.

Other favourites at Chez Manzo include Nutella, Peanut Butter (on it's own or with Nutella, if Nutella ain't nutty enought for you!), or cooking some chopped apple for a bit, with a touch of sugar.
    Don't call it a comeback... H, N, and the number 7.
    Ok, it's a bit of a comeback, I suppose...

Good call on the savoury styles... the poached egg/tommys and mushrooms options sound boss!

By the way Londoners, buying a crepe isn't really the same thing...

Often though, Mrs Lee makes kinda fat, US-style pancakes, with oatmeal (or even better, cornmeal) and savoury'n'spicy's the way to go with these: home-made salsa, chili-cheese+sweetcorn, poached egg+fried tomatoes, garlicky fried mushrooms - mm-mmm, 'tis all good!!

Gettin' hungry just thinking about this...

don't like sweet pancakes, so i quite favour a healthy dollop of lime pickle (the hotter the better). goes surprisingly well!

When i was a kid i used to go to my grans house from school at lunch times and for about a year all we ever had was pancakes with lemon and sugar and although at the time this was great i now have a distinct lack of interest in them.
However when we used to visit my other grans at the weekend she would always serve up a pre sunday dinner savoury pancake covered in gravy and onions and onto that we would put lashings of...now this bit might sound strange, but it's got me slavvering at the very thought of it...onion and cucumber thats been soaking in vinegar for about a week

    Thumbs up pancakes......

get silly try putting flavouring into the actual mix....vanilla,cinamon or mixed spice with a sweet flavour in mind...i recently did some crab and red onion panckes - served them with a lime and mango mayonnaise [ which was just a combination of mango chutney, juice and zest of 1 lime and mayo ] - top quality sausages [ avoid deep fried chippy ones !! ] and real smoked bacon [ ie:the flavouring has not been slapped on with a paintbrush and left to marinade-this is happening now ! ] lend themselves to those thick style american pancakes..topped with maple syrup or daddies sauce !
add pesto or mustard to your mix...serve with smoked salmon or some serrano ham...roll them and stuff them with spicy mince or oven roasted vegetables..top with cheese and bake in the oven..

shit-i forgot to buy eggs !!

If that was rhetorical ignore me, if it wasn't Isn't it cause your meant to be a secular country. Religion seperate from state.

As for the pancakes avoid the batter mix. once you've put your eggs, salt and milk into it, you realise you've been conned into buying pricy flour.

What, officially, is secular about Christmas and Easter?

Well, damn it, that just sucks. The only place in the country that celebrates Shrove Tuesday, killed by Mother Nature and the idiot we sorta elected. And I could've had an oyster poboy there -much better than pancakes, though occasionally lethal.

Exactly. It’s a Catholic thing. In the UK the pagan bacchanalia have been reduced to a few pancakes. I spent Monday night dressed up as top-hatted Parisian Genius of Evil and Lord of Terror Fantômas, dancing with girls dressed in only a few feathers to batucada drum rhythms, and then bar crawling with various folk dressed up as Flintstones, zombies, spidermen, Zorros and cigarette packets. When I finally woke up yesterday I did it Brit style with a few pancakes. Lemon and sugar – anything else is unholy.

A detour to the pub and a mistaken grasp of what was in the larder led to vegan pancakes being postponed until tonight.
You may wonder what the point of vegan pancakes are, in that apart from flour and salt the whole damn thing is dairy. We will see, we will see.
