is the Tommy Roe one of the Curt Boettcher produced things?

We've mostly discussed pop/psych anomalies, but I mentioned the Freddie Hubbard lp earlier... I suppose it's harder to identify something as anomalous in the career of an adventurous musician -but that Hubbard seems to me really to stick out in his discography. Must be other jazz anomalies...

I'll second the Hubbard LP. Silver's United States of Mind trilogy of LP's is also pretty different from his other LP's.

Brubeck's Truth is Fallen is another.

Yo flytipper --love the Orbison, thanks so much. Says it's from a cd called Dream Weavers: The Later Pop Stylings of Pre-Beatles People. Is this a creation of your own? Tracklisting?

I'm desperate for a Bobby Goldsboro anomaly.

Dunno about that... Hancock's discography is too varied, imo, for Sextant -or anything else, really- to stick out as an anomaly.

It actually doesn't sound much like the Beach Boys at all but then again It's a pretty difficult record to explain. I'm going to try by saying that It's the flipside of the coin to Scott Walker's solo work, It's similarly grandiose and ambitious (some would say pretentious but not everything can be Louie Louie)
but It has a Californian sunshine feel and he has a falsetto vocal.

It may not be to all VV'rs taste but It's always pretty cheap (I bought US and UK pressing both for around £8) and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who likes the Valli / Four seasons stuff.

Lou also made about a dozen classic 45's including the jack Nitzsche scored pop mini opera "If my Car could only talk"
My copy is a German pressing with a different picture from the one shown here. Lou is facing front. Great LP though.

Anyone else like Paul Jones' Crucifix in a Horseshoe ?

Off a recommendation in this thread I picked up the Lou Christie record. Fantastic! I listened to it a dozen times in two days.

Van Dyke Parks: an entire career made out of anomalous records. Just picked up "The Eagle and Me" 45 the other day. Odd little number.

Hmmm, didn't do much for me (even though I like some of Jones' other stuff, the 'Privilege' OST material high on the list) but still got the copy around if anyone else fancies giving it a whirl

Not exactly 'anomalous', but I've been very impressed by Judy Collins' 'Wildflowers' since finding it cheap at the weekend. Earlier stuff feels a bit standard, later becomes MOR, but this has lovely Joshua Rifkin orchestral arrangements that really make a difference, and I'd hazard a guess that if it was a rare femme-folk one-off by someone completely unknown it'd be fetching big money, so I'd definitely recommend picking this one up: highlight for me is probably 'Lasso di donna', which has a real Shirley & Dolly Collins kind of vibe with the pipe organ arrangement, but it's all pretty good.

Anyone know of any other Judy Collins stuff in this vein?

Agree about the Judy Collins. In the same category, had the song "Honey on My Mind" off John Stewart and Buffy Ford's SIGNALS THROUGH THE GLASS been released only as a single by Buffy Ford, it'd fetch some dough.

I like the Elyse Weinberg record a lot...

I picked up the Tommy Roe album, and I totally love it...fantastic record. Still no luck on the Lou Christie 'paint america love' though...I think I've seen it once on the bay since I started looking, assumed it was common, and haven't seen it since...

There's a nice track called 'Cook With Honey' on 'True Stories And Other Dreams' with a nice mellow Pentangle kind of feel. Recommended.

Its an exception in his career in that its an album he released as opposed to most years....

Resurrecting this old thread to mention that the Brian Hyland lp produced by Del Shannon certainly qualifies. In a way it sounds like a companion to the Charles Westover lp.

Also, I picked up the Ricky Nelson "psych" lp and I think it's crap. Too bad.

Another record that didn't get mentioned is Hoyt Axton's MY GRIFFIN IS GONE, which is not by any stretch of the imagination straightforward country music! And check out his JOY TO THE WORLD for an astonishing track called "The Pusher". Fantastic!

Yeah Hoyt is the one who wrote Joy and The Pusher (same one Steppenwolf covered). I have a bunch of additions (Im sure most have been mentioned before) but Im in the middle of cleaning up after dinner right now. Ones that come to mind right now are the Mae West - Way Out West and James Brown - Sho Is Funky Down Here.
See, you don't get those haircuts on your mp3s.
