    Question funky blues and folk...

I'm playing out next month, for a mate, who is a slide guitar player/ragtime-folk-acoustic-blues player. Hes asked me to spin a few records (at his warm up gig for a gig he's got in north london) that are sympathetic to what he's doing but kinda funky (but in his words "not in a meters" way). This isn't normally the sort of stuff I'd play out..

    So far I've dug out:-

Milt Matthews- It Ain't Your Fault
    Donovan- Get Thy Bearings
    Labi Siffre- Rocking Chair
Ted Hawkins- I Got What I Wanted
    Richie Havens- Handsome Johnny

I know the folk/funk thing has been much discussed but I'm just thinking what else I can pull outta the bag without breaking the bank....

    His website is

    http://www.tomcolborn.com/

    http://www.myspace.com/tomcolbornblues

Any thoughts on what I can play would be much appreciated...

You cant go wrong with a bit of Ellen Mcilwaine in my opinion.

    lps

    We the People (polydor)
    Honky Tonk Angel (polydor)
The Real Ellen Mcilwaine (koi'tai) this one is more expensive so I stick with the first to or if you buy CDs there's a great comp.

Some crosby, stills and Nash !
Christine McVie - Christine Perfect lp (80's reissue pretty easy to get).

There was a good compilation (bootleg )called "folk funk experiece" well worth looking for.

Bonnie Dobson LP with "Winter's Going" is nice and cheap...and the Susan Christie and Christine Harwood reissues on Finders Keepers are worth grabbing if you haven't already....

Several tracks off the second Jimmie and Vella lp would work nicely.

He's got a new album out in the next month or two...

The stuff on the 'net is between a year and 3 yrs old. So some of his new stuff is pretty s**t hot..

Definitely one to watch out for. he's recording with UK Harmonica legend Steve Lockwood and the demos I've heard are pretty great...

listened to Black Raven Blues and thought it was great....
as for records to spin up at the gig....
Scott Cushnie (Aerosmith!!) did some very good blues/rag/bluegrass material that may fit well...
Big Black did a great album of blues stuff called 'BB & The Blues'
    Taj Mahal?
Dutch Mason - great jazz/blues though not cheap.
Fenton Robinson did a very funky (in a blues way) album called 'Somebody Loan Me A Dime'.

maybe Link Wray's S/T 1970 LP on Polydor, with 'Fire & Brimstone' has some of that swamp funk blues vibe to it as well...

You could try a bit of Bobby Bland. "Ask me about nothin but the blues" is incredible but not sure how hard it is to turn up as I don't have one.

There must be some Pentangle tunes you could use (I saw an angel, springtime promises etc)

Sorry if these are way off, I haven't actually listened to the music yet because I'm at work.

RE Taj Mahal: His version of Corrina is one of my favourite songs of all time. I went through a period of listening to this 6 or 7 times a day for about two weeks once.

Yank Rachell and Big Daddy Kinsey should work well.
